Polly/Mary RUNNELS was a dau. of Moses RUNNELS and wife Susannah (originally from Patrick/Henry Counties, VA, to Washington Co., TN, then to Pulaski Co., KY, before they arrived in Franklin Co., TN, pre-1820, when Moses RUNNELS joined the Boiling Forks Baptist Church at the same time as Joseph SEWELL and one Samson MALONE. Polly and Pumphrey MALONE married in Franklin Co., I believe, before 1827, as the will of Moses RUNNELS proved 1827, Franklin Co., names his daughter, Polly MALONE. In the Minutes of Boiling Fork Baptist Church, there were a few mentions of a fight between Henry RUNNELS, a son of Moses, and Robert and Mark MALONE --- I had figured that Pumphrey, Robert and Mark were all sons of Samson MALONE, but haven't researched them at all yet. I have no knowledge of Pumphrey MALONE marrying Nancy WELLS. Where did this marriage take place? (Source?) >From McNairy Co. TN Will Index 1858-1967 (from Court Minute Books & Will Books), Research by Albert Brown: 4th November 1861 -- Minutes of court proceedings -- Petition to sell land & slaves of Susannah REYNOLDS, widow of Moses REYNOLDS --- names "Polly MALONE and Pumphry MALONE her husband" as "heirs of Moses REYNOLDS, deceased". It is not clear whether Polly and Pumphrey were still living when her mother died in McNairy Co. in 1859. I also don't know whether this couple actually migrated to McNairy Co. after the death of Moses in Franklin Co. in 1827 or went elsewhere. (I wonder now if the Nancy Susannah RUNNELS might be this widow of Moses? No dates on her grave marker.) Very interested to hear what you think of this. Julie, You may already know this but . . .. Your Pumphrey Malone who married Nancy Wells and Polly Runnells (supposedly) seems to have been the son of John Malone and Ann Blackwell. John Malone seems to have been the son of Daniel Malone and Elizabeth Staples. This does sound right???? Anne Blackwell seems to have been the daughter of John Blackwell and his wife Frances Pompfret. Frances Pompfret seems to be the daughter of John Pomfret and Ann Hunt. John Blackwell's parents appear to be William Blackwell and Mary Marshall, dau of William Marshall. This John Malone seems to have had some connection to a Deloney Malone but not sure that it is the same Deloney whose widow later appears in McNairy Co., TN. This older Deloney Malone seems to have died about 1834 in Sumner Co., Tn. This older Deloney seems to have been the son of Isham Malone and Judith Cole who is also the predecessor of my husband's Daniel Malone of Union Co., SC., and whose descendants were in Tippah Co., MS., at some later time. Does any of this ring a bell? Hi, everybody. I'm working on the McCLUNG family while they were in McNairy County. This was a very small group of people. This is what I know: (Unkn) McCLUNG b. abt 1830 ARK, d. bef 1870 m. abt 1850-52 to Sarah A. BAUCUM b. abt 1830 NC, d. bef 1880 parents: Asa Abraham Baucum and Linnie Bell Rogers In the 1870 census, Sarah is living adjacent to her father (Asa) and his new wife (Rebecca Melton) in the McNairy Co 11th district. (Some secondary sources show her as Sarah McClun, but the census itself shows McClung.) These are her children shown in the census: Mary A. b. abt 1853 TN Josephine b. abt 1856 TX Sarah I. b. abt 1860 ARK Samuel b. abt 1862 ARK William A. b. July 1865 ARK In the 1880 census, the youngest (William A. McCLUNG) is shown living with his uncle, WILEY BAUCUM (and Wiley's wife, Margaret BEARD BAUCUM and their children). William A. McClung is shown as Wiley's nephew. (I can rule out anyone on Margaret Beard's side of the family.) I find no marriages for the daughters in McNairy County. However, William A. McCLUNG married Lela O. TATE on 13 December 1888 in McNairy Co (Book K, p. 156). In the 1900 census, William A. and Lela were living in the 15th district, Household 98 and they had a daughter, Artie, born in October 1889. They do not appear again in the McNairy censuses. Does anyone have any information about this family and what happened to them or where they moved to? Thanks very much for any help. Joanne Baucum
Hi, everyone. I'm trying to find out more about the following members of the SURRATT family in McNairy County and their living descendants. I'm particularly interested in locating any members of this family who might be living in McNairy County right now. William Albert SURRATT b. 1879 TN, d. 1946 TN, buried at Adamsville Cemetery, McNairy Co parents: Andrew J. SURRATT and Mary (Unkn) m. 28 June 1902 in Hardin Co, TN to Beulah WILSON b. SURRATT b. abt 1920 Can anyone help me with the third and fourth children (Virginia and James S.) above? Are there any marriage records for them in McNairy County? I don't have access to marriage records beyond 1926. Does anyone know if any of these four children (1-4 above) or their descendants are currently living in McNairy County? Thanks very much for the help. Joanne Baucum
Hi, Julie. These are the Malones shown in the McNairy Co Cemetery book (1824-1984). Couldn't tell what might be a match, so I'm listing all of them for you. Besides, you might find something that you might not have noticed before (happens to me all the time). Mary P. Malone below might be a match, depending on the dates. There isn't a Pumphrey Malone. All Last Names are MALONE, so I'm omitting that to save typing. Each line will show First Name, born, died, cemetery. Bob b. 27 Jul 1873, d. 6 Nov 1875 Malone [Cemetery] D. Thanks very much, Cheryl, for all the additional information about the CASE family. I think you're probably correct that the older Jonas and the older William are brothers, but agree that it's circumstantial evidence at this point. I was focused almost entirely on Jonas' family, but I found your information extremely interesting. If you hear from anyone in the CASE family from McNairy County (other than through this mail list), please let me know. Thanks again. Hi Cousins & Fellow Listers, I must apologize for not responding to those of you I owe responses. You see, I had a bonding experience over the holidays with my computer. To put it briefly, I am now intimately familiar with the DOS command 'FORMAT C:' In the process I ended up losing all my email addresses and filed messages. Although I print most of the email that catches my eye, I am sure there are some that I owed answers to that are now floating around in the bit bucket. So, If I do owe you something, please re-ask! Many thanks, Pat and Muriel, for helping me locate the "3rd District", and thanks, also, to the others who responded with CASE family info. I suspect, although I have no documented proof AS YET, that the Jonas CASE listed as age 63, in the McNairy 1850 census, and the William CASE (Sr.) listed as age 56 (actually he was probably closer to 58), are brothers. After breaking down all the information, it appears there are two main CASE families in the 1850 McNairy census, with all of the CASE family members belonging to one or the other. 1850 Census- sons of Jonas with their own households: William (39), Charles (34), John (26), Aaron (24) sons of William Sr. with their own households: Thomas (31), Martin (26), Perry (23) In 1852, William CASE Sr. and his grown sons, Thomas and Martin, along with their families migrated to Polk Co., MO. Apparently, William's son-in-laws, Jesse SHAW, and James ROWLAND, and their families went, too. They were probably part of a huge wagon train that included the Hardeman Co. families of HIGHFILL, FORTNER, and NORTON. After reaching Missouri, the various families settled in the four corners area of Polk, Dallas, Webster and Greene counties. In 1860, William Sr.'s son, Perry CASE, is enumerated in the McNairy Co. census, as is John CASE, son of Jonas. In that census, there is a Nancy Jane CASE, age 24, listed in the household of Perry CASE. Perhaps this Nancy is the daughter of Jonas CASE, (listed as age 15 in the 1850 census), now orphaned, and living with her cousin Perry, (if my theory is right). It could not have been Perry's sister, Nancy, who was about the same age, as she moved to Missouri with the rest of the clan, and married John J. Highfill on 12 Sep 1854. Family legend says that the William CASE Sr., born abt 1792, (and possible brother to Jonas), was 1/2 Cherokee. His birthplace was always listed as GA, but could have been the border area of GA that was disputed with NC, and was later made part of NC after 1811. The family lived somewhere in MS before moving to TN, as the older children list MS as their birthplace. William CASE Sr. had probably moved to MS sometime before 1818. About ten years later, he moved his family from MS to McNairy Co., receiving a land grant of 150 acres on 2 Feb 1827. I would love to exchange info with any of you who are descendants of Jonas CASE. Do you know WHERE in NC Jonas was born? Have you heard about any Cherokee blood in the family? Do you know where Jonas lived before moving to McNairy Co.? I look forward to hearing from any of you interested in the CASE family line. This McNairy Co. mail list is a great group! Sincerely, Cheryl F. Luginbill timetraveler@apex2000.net
