There is a page on the Dyer Co. site that has some history of part of the 6th Cav. Might want to take a look: http://www.ecsis.net/dyer/history/homemade.html Here is also a short article about the unit: Excerpt from "EARLY HISTORY OF McNAIRY,COUNTY" The McNairy Co. Independent (newspaper). OCTOBER 26, 1923. "Since the county had taken such a positive stand on the then great issuses, many soldiers for both armies were soon in the service, Gen. Andrew Johnson commissioned Fielding Hurst to raise a regiment for the Federal army, and October 1862, companies A - B - C - D, and G. were raised, and these became the Sixth Union Tennessee Cavalary, known by many in the county as the " Sixth Tennessee "." "This regiment was organized at Bethel Springs, and was mustered into the service in November, 1862. The officers of the " Sixth Tennessee" were Fielding Hurst, Colonel W. K. M. Breckinridge, Lieutenant Colonels, E. S. Tidwell and R. M. Thompson, Majors, Thos. Williams, Surgeon, Joe E. Morvin, assisant surgeon, W. J. Smith quartermaster, F. M. Clayton, Commissary, J. J. Smith, chaplin, S. L. Warren, adjunat, B. S. Walker, sergeant major, J. F. Tidwell, hospital steward, J. R. Ray, Regimental quartermaster, J. A. Locked, regimental commisswary sergeant. At the close of the war, W. J. Smith was colonel, and S. L. Warren was a Major." "The officers of Company A were A. M. Thompson, B. J. Riggs, and Samuel Lewis, Captain. The other officers were J.N. Smith, C. N. Deford, Thos. Craught and Wm. N. and the other officers were Samuel D. Hanna, Wm. W. Kirby, and John Huddleston. Nathan M. D. Kemp was Captain of Company C., and W. T. Smith and James M. Sanders were the officers, L.Hurst and J. L. W. Bostman were captain of Company D.,and Zach Norcott and John P. Gibbs, were the officers. J. L. W.Boatman was an officer in Company G. and this company was composed largely of men from Decatur county." "We would like to publish the roster of the men composing all the companies that went from McNairy County to the war of the sixties. No county gave to the armies of the north and south braver soldiers than those who went from this county. The ranks have thinned, and while they wrote a record of imperishable glory, many of the names have been forgotten by this younger and newer generation. The heroic deeds of these men will never be forgotten, and they will never die." Ed Waller
I,m not Pat, but if you will give me an idea of the lay out you would like and the type of information which will be posted, as well as willing to submit the material. I will be more than happy to create a page for the military "any and all wars", on the McNairy co web site. Better yet, if any of you would like to undertake the project, and submit the material to the web site, I will be more than happy to help you with this project. Does anyone have any details of the subject plane crash which occurred in Hardin Co. in 1835. Thanks, David Cerro Gordo
Maybe Pat could put a roster page up for Union & Confederate veterans from McNairy County and we all could enter our veterans. It would be interesting to see which side our relations fought for. Joyce The marriage certificates offer the names and ages of the applicants, it can also be a valuable source of other information. It has the name(s) of the person who put up the bond, usually a relative but not necesscarily, also the name of the person performing the ceremony. Has the twp. of the person making the application. To me, an actual copy is considered a better source from the standpoint of documentation. Julia Cooper

Most of the State Archives Libraries will have these books. Also, if your ancestor has a military stone it should have his unit & rank on it. If you live near a regional National Archives they can help you. The form is called "Order for copies of Veterans records" the place to write is: Textual Reference Branch(NWDT1) National Archives and Records Administration 7th and Pennsylvania Avenue NW Washington, DC 20408 the number to call: 202-501-5170 You could call them and ask for help. I believe this place is for Union Soldiers only. I had to write to the Arkansas Archives for a CSA veteran that signed up in Arkansas. Hope this helps. Nancy, I have in my possession, receipts for corn taken from my g/g/grandfather, John Cagle, one by Capt. Risden D. Deford and the second signed by Liut. Calvin Hanna, both representing a Detachment of 6th Tennessee Cav., dated 10 June 1865 and 10 July 1865. They got 20 bushels the first trip, came back a month later and got the 2 bushels he had left. Do you suppose this could have been because John had two sons, one who had been in the Confederate Cavalry and the other in an Artillery Company? Deford and Hanna were both Hardin County Men, Deford from Olive Hill and Hanna from Saltillo. Their detachment was stationed at Clifton TN at that point in time. If any of you 6th Cav. historians would like a copy of these receipts, please e-mail me privately as I shouldn't send an attachment to the list. David Cerro Gordo Hardin Co. TN
I am from Mary Margaret Wilson who married William Olen Stanton. Their children were William J., Georgia Ann, John, Joseph Ashburry, and Sarah Thomas Stanton. Sarah was born in March 1859.
