MONROE CARLOS HOLLAND, born Aug. 31, 1914, in McNairy County, was the second of nine boys. A sister born in 1913 died as an infant. Carlos attended Liberty Elementary and Purdy College High School. Growing up on a farm, a lot of nights were spent "making music." The entire family was very musically inclined and even had a radio program in Corinth, MS for a period of time. Carlos was proficient playing the four string banjo, electric guitar, steel guitar, mandolin, Jews Harp and French Harp. In 1933 Lela Chumney, age 20 was holding a revival in Adamsville, and Carlos Holland, a young man from a neighboring town visited the revival. Thing progressed and on Dec. 1, 1934 they were married. In 1941 they moved to Hohenwald and after a few setbacks, built a church and Carlos secured a job with General Shoe. He worked thirty-four years as a supervisor for them. In 1974 he retired and immediately took the position as maintenance and transportation director for the school system, a position he filled for ten years. He was well known as a huge practical joker. He would rather "get the goods" on someone than eat when he was hungry. Since he was married to a minister he told everyone to just call him the "preacher's wife." When he purchased a new home he had enough land that in his spare time and as a hobby, he built and sold two houses, doing 90% of the work himself. He was an avid beekeeper and when the CB craze came he erected a tower and promptly labeled himself the Beekeeper and Lela the Queen Bee. Mr. Holland was very active in the political life of the city. He served as President of the Civic Club, and also served terms as a City Councilman and as Vice-Mayor. After his retirements he stated building potato boxes, lamps, clocks, coat racks, and children's play tables with chairs for the Wal-Mart stores from Franklin to Jackson. He dearly loved helping people build and repair any type of project they might have. He was a great husband, brother, father, and friend. We loved him dearly and will miss him. Where is this church located?
I am currently typing the old Clear Creek Church (Missionary Baptist) Minutes from 1828 - 1874. Does nayone know anything about this church or the Clear Creek Primitive Baptist Church? David Horn gave some land to the Clear Creek Church of the Baptist order in 1869. This was made to the deacons Jacob Jackson and Reuben Jackson. Jacob Jackson stayed with the Primitive Baptist when the church split in 1841-1842. I have tried (in vain) to find what happened to this church after 1869. The deed said it was on the Purdy/ Monteray Rd. I suspect it was before you get to Stantonville since Clear Creek is north of Stantonville. If anyone knows something, please let me know. Thanks Nancy Kennedy _________________________________________________________________ Check out the new MSN 9 Dial-up fast & reliable Internet access with prime features! http://join.msn.com/?pgmarket=en-us&page=dialup/home&ST=1
