Dear List Members, Lets have a Roll Call this weekend. The Roll Call will begin on Thursday Morning April 18th and continue on through Sunday evening April 21st. (PLEASE DO NOT BEGIN TO SEND YOUR ROLL CALL POSTINGS UNTIL THURSDAY MORNING.) Post your Surnames, dates townships if known and if you are posting to multiple counties that I take care of, be sure and mention county. If you are posting to a county along a state line when I take care of lists on both sides, you might also mention the state. You are welcome to post as much information as you wish and as little as long as there is a Surname, county and or time period. Be sure and watch the Subject line and CHANGE IT TO MATCH YOUR ROLL CALL POSTING to encourage members to read your message, such as ROLL CALL: SMITH, JONES, KELLETT 1830-1870 COUNTY NAME. PLEASE DO NOT JUST HIT RETURN AND TYPE IN YOUR INFORMATION!!!! CHANGE THE SUBJECT LINE AND DELETE THE LAST MESSAGE LONG WITH TAGLINES. Following these instructions will make this a much better Roll Call for all our members including yourself. For those members who do not like Roll Calls, just delete the messages and know that come Sunday night - it will be over. I continue to appreciate your support. It is because of each of you that our list is as strong as it is. Kathleen Burnett List Mom
Kathleen I would like to request that this list and the McMinn Message Board be gatewayed so that we may see the posts there also...if it isn't already. I don't recall seeing any. Hi everyone! I have a real brick wall here...I am having the hardest time finding anything on the parents of my g-g-grandfather HARDY P. MOSS. He was married on May 10, 1857 to Adaline Rutherford (Reatherford?) in McMinn County, and later moved to Hardeman County. There is some speculation among family members that his parents were ELI MOSS and DICEY BROCK, and they were perhaps from South or North Carolina. I really know absolutely nothing about Eli and Dicey, and hope to make a concrete connection to Hardy. If it helps, here are some things I know about Hardy P. Moss: HARDY P. MOSS/ADALINE RUTHERFORD married May 10, 1857 in McMinn County moved to Hardeman County around 1870/1880? both buried in Middleburg Cemetery in Bolivar, TN (Hardeman County) had 8 children: John B. Robert Mary Huldie (short for Mahulda?) William B. JAMES FELIX (my great-grandfather) married MARY ELIZA GOFF (Gough) Dolly Sam Hardy P. Moss was part of the 7th Regiment Mounted Infantry, company E in the Civil War (on the Union side). in the 1880 Census of Hardeman County (2nd District, household 190) Hardy P. Moss reported his age as being 45, making his birth year 1834/1835.However, in the 1870 Census, he was reported as being 32 years old...which would make him born perhaps in 1838? Adaline was reported as being 35in 1880, making her birth year 1844/1845. I have Dicey Brock Moss (spelled Dissie in the census) in the 1870 Tenn. Census P. 146 M5p3-Roll 1549 born in SC, 69 years of age, placing her birth around 1800 or so, I'd guess? She died in 1874 at the age of 73 years. The only references I have of Eli are: a listing for court, in which a coroner was paid for holding inquest over his body: April 6, 1846 in McMinn County. Eli Moss is listed in the 1830 census for McMinn County, TN: 1 male under age 5 1 male age 5-10 1 male age 30-40 (Eli) 1 female under age 5 1 female age 5-10 1 female age 10-15 1 female age 30-40 (wife) Dicey is listed in a chancery court record, case 108 SPILLMAN & GLENN v. John THOMASSON & others. Filed Oct. 30, 1850. Dicey Moss, age 50, widow of Eli Moss, is listed as a witness in the case. in the 1850 McMinn County census, Dicey Moss age 50 is living in the hosehold with : #1772 William RANDOLPH age 32, born TN, and wife Hulda (Maybe Hardy P. Moss's daughter Huldie is named after this one?) age 32 born in SC, Harriet 10, William 9, James 5, Clarissa 2, Elizabeth MOSS age 18, and Dicey Moss age 50. Next door is probably a married son of Eli and Dicey's: #1773 William MOSS age 25, Farmer, TN Elizabeth 20 James 1 I'm wondering if my Mosses have any connection to the Gilbert Moss/Hugh Moss/Ephraim Moss line from SC that I keep hearing so much about. Any info on ANY of the names I mentioned here would be WELCOME!! OK, I'm done! Sorry! It's amazing that all of this still doesn't make a real connection yet! Thank you! Ben Moss james.moss@usm.edu
