I bought a copy of The Annals of Tennessee by Ramsey on-line thru Amazon.com, but from A-1 Books.. New copy for $44.00 included shipping..received it just last week.. but remember to take note.. he wrote this in 1853 and some of his historical facts ( as we are warned) are not exactally correct.. This came from another genealogy newsletter, but I thought it might be of interest to those of you who want to historical research for TN. I have no idea where you'd get it, but it'd be interesting to find out. Bernice Raymond ---------Original Message------------ Doing research on my Capt. John "Jack: GORDON in TN, in Ramsey's THE ANNALS OF TENNESSEE by J.G.M. Ramsey, AM, MD. I found the following, p.608: "On the 6th of July, 1794, Isaac Mayfield was killed by Indiana within five miles of Nashville. He was standing sentinel for his son-in-law while he hoed corn, and got the first fire at the Indiana; but there being from twelve to fifteen of them, and very near to him, he could not escape." Eight balls penetrated his body ; he was scalped, a new English bayonet was thrust through his face, and two bloody tomahawks left near his mauled body. He was the sixth person of his name who had been killed or captured by the Creeks and Cherokees." This was in 1794. Sorry but it appears quite a few Mayfields lost their lives this way. Hope this helps someone, as gruesome as it is.
Have you tried Polk & Bradley Counties? There are Hughes there also. My grandfather's wife's maiden name was Hughes. Her father was Jake Hughes, but I have no idea of her mother's name. Check there if you haven't already. Bernice Raymond At 09:02 PM 5/2/2002 -0400, you wrote: >I am looking for the parents and birth of James M. Dear List Members, This Roll Call is over. I want to thank each of your for making it the success it was. I know that Roll Calls cause lots of extra mail, and the way you handled this one is appreciated by myself and your fellow members of this list. If you missed the Roll Call, you are still welcome to post your information and your queries, but PLEASE do not place Roll Call in the subject line. I would also appreciate it if each of you would be careful in the next few days and watch your Subject lines to make sure that we are not passing on the words Roll Call. Again I thank you for your support. It is because of each of you that our list is a great place to share information about our ancestors and the areas they came from, migrated to and settled in. I am interested in any information on any of the above family names. I have: Andrew Jackson Kirksey married to Mary Anne Hoover/Brock. She went by both names. Brock was her maiden name but she was known as Hoover after her Brock father died and her mother re-married. Both of the above are buried in Kirksey Cemetery in McMinn Co. Mary Mayme "Mamie" Kirksey, daughter of William Washington (son of Andrew Jackson) Kirksey married Tom Abraham Slack. I have that they married in Benton, Tennessee. Sarah Fleurida/ Florida "Flordi" H. Kirksey AND Minerva Caroline Kirksey daughters of Andrew Jackson Kirksey married Bascom Orlando Studdard. One died and he married her sister. Mary Melissa "Lizzie" Kirksey, daughter of Andrew Jackson Kirksey married Hubert Brownlow "Robert" (I) Bookout in McMinn Co and they migrated to Texas where both died and are buried. They had several children while still in McMinn Co. George Washington Kirksey II, brother to Andrew Jackson Kirksey and son of G.W. Kirksey I, married Frances "Fannie" Tyner, I am told in McMinn Co, but have no proof. I would LOVE some. Would love feedback or help on any of the above names.
