1. [MCMINN] John TEAGUE
2. Pat Burns
3. Sorry, I just sent a previous email without a message. I pushed the wrong button. Anyway, I'm looking for a John Teague who, according to the 1850 California census, was born in Tennessee, age 29. I have found some Teague families in McMinn county who might be related to him. Does anyone have any information about a John Teague, born Tennessee about 1821? The only other information I have about him is that he was a goldminer in El Dorado county, CA in 1850. An antique knife that would have been used by goldminers was purchased "from the family" in Denison, Grayson County, TX. I appreciate any help. Thanks. pat ===== Pat Burns __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Y! Web Hosting - Let the expert host your web site http://webhosting.yahoo.com/

1. [MCMINN] BERTRAM: William BUTRAM, II, White Co., TN Pilgrimage Oct. 26th - 27th, 2002
2. Anna L Bertram
3. Autumn Greetings to all BERTRAM or BUTTRAM Researchers of All Spellings !!! This is a reminder of the events scheduled in White Co., TN on October 26th and 27th to honor the Revolutionary War soldier we know as William BUTRAM, II, and his descendants, and to further your BUTTRAM or BERTRAM research. My husband is his direct descendant through William BERTRAM, III, and Nancy STINSON, "Parents of the Wayne Co., KY BERTRAMS". I can imagine a cool, crisp fall day with the leaves turned to bright hues of red, and gold when William BUTRAM, II, age 94, was finally laid to rest in the Bradley Cemetery on the top of a peaceful hill above the Calfkiller River. The date was November 10, 1853, almost 149 years ago. It is fitting that we gather there again this fall, on Saturday, October 26th, to give tribute to him and his family. Those planning to meet us for this event are encouraged to let us know so we can expect you. We will meet in the parking lot of the Sparta, White Co., TN Wal*Mart at 1 P.M. on Saturday, October 26, 2002. We will be on the side nearest the U.S. Bank, formerly known as Firstar Bank. Wear walking or hiking shoes. We will car pool to the pasture where the Bradley Cemetery is located and the gate will be unlocked for us. Be sure to bring your cameras! The next day, Sunday, October 27th, you are invited also to the BUTTRUM Family Reunion in the Community Center at Sparta, White Co., TN. Contact us for details if you plan to attend. William BUTRAM, II, was born in Rowan Co., North Carolina on July 15, 1759 to Margaret _____ and William BUTTRAM, I. On January 29, 1780 he married Sarah PATTERSON in Rowan Co., North Carolina. Their house in Rowan Co. was destroyed by fire after the births of their first four children. They then moved to Iredell Co., N.C., where they remained for nineteen years. Census records show him as head of a household in Iredell Co. in 1790 and 1800. Also, brothers Nicholas and Jacob BUTTRAM had their own households in Iredell Co., North Carolina by the 1800 census. William BUTRAM, II, then moved to Lee Co., VA for about ten years. (An Andrew BUTRAM was there on the 1810 Federal Census and a William BUTTERN {a.k.a. BUTTRAM?} was on the 1810 Lee Co., VA Personal Property Tax List.) William BUTRAM, II, whom I sometimes refer to as "White County William", relocated to Wayne Co., KY about 1815/1816, but spent his last years in White Co., TN. He was in Wayne Co., KY on the 1820 and 1830 Federal Census. We don't know exactly when William moved to White Co., TN but it was sometime between January 30, 1834, when he applied for a pension from Wayne Co., KY, and the time of the enumeration of the 1840 White Co., TN Census on which both he and his son, Willis, appeared. William BUTRAM, II, was still head of the household in White Co., TN. His blind and spinster daughter, Katy, was with him, as was his granddaughter, Mary Louisa. Mary Louisa was a daughter of Willis BUTTRAM, a son of William BUTRAM, II, and Sarah PATTERSON. 1968 - The Sparta Chapter of the Daughters' of the American Revolution placed a Military Grave Marker on the grave of William BUTRAM, II. However, at the time the military marker was ordered the exact location of the grave had not been found. That is the reason the marker shows a wrong date for the death of our William. Farther up the road toward Monterey and on the east side of the road is the France Cemetery where the Civil War hero or villain, Champ FERGUSON, is buried." {This is also where Willis/William Champ BUTTRUM is buried, a great-grandson of Sarah and William BUTRAM, II, who was the namesake of Champ FERGUSON.} Hope to see many of you there! Anna and Fount BERTRAM abertram@heartoftn.net

1. [MCMINN] More about possible Cemetery at Athens WAL-MART Site
2. This was in today's paper. State archaeologist: No cemetery on Wal-Mart site By: BEN BENTON Source: The Daily Post-Athenian 09-19-2002 A state archaeologist says the site thought to be a Civil War-era cemetery turned out to be depressions left by a felled tree that was part of a long-abandoned fence line on the property where Wal-Mart officials are planning to build a new “super store.” Tennessee Division of Archaeology state archeologist Nick Fielder said this week he found no indications a cemetery was ever located on the site. “I went up and looked at it, and I used an 1895 map, a 1944 map and a 1964 map for locations,” Fielder said. “They showed the road network and houses. I had a good feel for how it looked before. They (the maps) showed the fence line that’s up there and then I walked up and looked at the site where they found the alleged graves.” Fielder said he found no indication any graves ever existed on the site. He said he didn’t inspect the entire site, but said there were no other indications of a cemetery in the area. “In my opinion, that’s not a cemetery,” he said. “The depression they were looking at was from a tree,” he said. “That’s just an old fence line up there. I’ve looked at a lot of cemeteries over the years.” Fielder said he specializes in the location of old cemeteries and noted the lost cemetery was “supposed to be somewhere in the area.” According to Fielder, several depressions appearing there were more likely left by trees that were used as “fence posts” along the fence row which later fell and decayed, leaving the depressions. The location off of Congress Parkway and Decatur Pike is about three miles from downtown Athens, just as the missing cemetery is said to be positioned. Fielder said over past decades it was possible subsequent development of the three-mile perimeter of Athens could have disturbed or destroyed the old cemetery without notice. The cemetery issue arose when a Wal-Mart employee happened across the depressions in August while walking on the property, which is located on Layman Road behind the current Wal-Mart store on Congress Parkway. The property was once owned by the Layman family, according to records, and Stewart and McMinn County Historical and Heritage Society President Rex Moses speculated the site was that of the old Sivels-Vestal Cemetery which is supposed to be located somewhere in the area. The cemetery was in use during the Civil War and no one has been able to locate the exact site in recent years. The land in question now is listed in the name of First Mortgage Co., of Naples, Fla., in care of G.A. McHale of Fort Myers, Fla. Wal-Mart officials could not be reached for comment on the archaeologist’s findings.
