There is an inventory and estate sale recorded in Will Book 'E', but no final settlement. Administrators were James M. Baker and John Williams (apparent sons-in-law). He owned a considerable amount of property on the headwaters of Rutherford and Flat Creeks, North and East of Columbia. He came to Maury from Hawkins Co, TN around 1808, and settled on land he purchased from William Cocke, also of Hawkins. An apparent friend and/or relation from Hawkins Co, William Lane, also settled in the same area about the same time. From the estate sale, the following people seem to be relations, as they bought all of the slaves and most of the chattels. Almost all of the purchasers were in close proximity on the 1820 census. Martha Smith (possible wife?, no idea who she is) Samuel Smith, Jr. (apparent son?) William Smith (apparent son?, married Mary Lane) Francis C. Smith (apparent son?, married Sarah Lane) (this is my ancestor) James Smith (apparent son?) John Smith James M. Baker (son-in-law?, m. Martha Jane Smith) John Williams (son-in-law?, m. Abigail Smith) William Williams (brother of John?, m. Nancy Lane) William Smith, Francis C. Smith, William Williams, and James M. Baker moved to Madison Co, MS in the 1830's or early 40's. Baker moved on to Texas. John Williams moved to Greene/Lawrence Co, MO in 1830's. Other purchasers of numerous items were Joseph Long, Jesse Rainey, and Humphrey Hardison. If anyone knows of a final settlement or other documentation showing heirs or disposition of the estate of Samuel Smith, I would be very grateful to learn of it. It is a mamoth effort trying to track this particular Samuel Smith apart from so many others in East Tennessee, and help would definitely be appreciated. I have collected most of the deeds I can find in Maury and Hawkins counties involving the above mentioned people, and unfortunately, relationships are not mentioned. I have been unable to visit Maury County, and I cannot help but believe that there is more information on an estate of this size. Chancery Court Abstracts by Garrett and Lightfoot (1965) had no mention of it, but they also said they were only able to process about half of the files in existence. Much of the Lane info is proven in cases of Dugger vs. Lane (?) and Dugger vs. Dugger (1853). Thanks in advance, Tim Upton
