Dear Joan, Maury County was carved from Willilamson County by the Tennessee Legislature on 24 Nov 1807. Until 7 Jan 1906, the territory south of the Harpeth Hills, north of Duck River, was considered Indian territory and off limits to settlers. A few probably entered the area and built crude log cabins, planted small crops, etc. prior to 1806 but they were not many and their names have pretty well been lost. When the treaty was signed, ceeding the lands all the way to Alabama to the U.S.A., settlers began to pour into the territory and within a year there were enough inhabitants for the state to create the new county. Hope this helps. Lottaluck. Fred.
