Abijah Davis Mitchell (1797-1891) was born in Virginia, moved to Tennessee with his parents, met and married Mary Polly Wells. Mary's lineage goes back to North Carolina. It was originally thought A. D. only had two children, but a thorough search of the surrounding counties revealed he lived in Marshall County, Tennessee, and they had ten children. I (Robt. D. Mitchell) have a copy of his will where he apparently cut one of his daughters, Elizabeth Jane Montgomery, completely out of his will. He was also listed on the 1850 AG Census which showed him to own 4 slaves, various other animals, 350 bushels of corn and 1750 bushels of wheat. He must have had a sizeable place. I have been to A.D. & Mary's graves. They are buried in Wells Cemetery in Culleoka, Maury County, located on Red Martin's place. The Cemetery is in deplorable condition, sitting in the middle of a cow pasture where the cows can roam all through it. The markers are getting faint and hard to read, weeds and thorns are covering the spot. When A. D. died he was the oldest living person in Marshall County, Tennessee, and was well thought of by the county's peoples. He was known as "Uncle Davis Mitchell". He was a member of the Friendship Baptist Church in Culleoka and was baptized when he was 90 years old. He broke two ribs several weeks before his death. He told a newspaper reporter prior to this accident he had never laid in bed for sickness a whole day in his life.
