    2. Shirley, You are right -- and you are wrong. I, too, am a descendant of Tolliver Craig, but I am likely looking for a Craig in Maury Co. who is not from that family. I am a descendant of William Craig (c. 1760/70, Orange Co., VA - March 1834, Bedford Co., TN), the son of Tolliver Craig Jr. and Elizabeth Johnson/Johnston. William married Mary Taylor, daughter of Capt. Jonathan Taylor of Clarke Co., KY, in 1799 in Montgomery Co., KY. They moved to Logan Co., KY and then to Richmond in southwest Bedford Co. I am descended through their son, Robert Taylor "Old Hickory" Craig whose farm ended up in Marshall Co., TN as the lines shifted. Robert Craig's daughter Mary Ann married George Ray and moved to Independence Co., AR and then Christian Co., MO, where their descendants married into the McConnells, Kenamores and other lines. William Craig had a brother, Johnston, who is said to have married and moved to Maury Co., but I always had doubts about the story. I suspect I am looking for a descendant of the Orange Co., NC Craig family who moved to Maury. Thanks for the information on Ann Burton. I am familiar with Craig Links from my research in the early 1990s. Randy McConnell

    2. Mary C. Moore
    3. Hello, Wayne, Is this one of the history books that contains family stories written by the people of the county or is it one which contains actual historical facts and not just biographies? I am researching the family of Denson Aaron Moore who murdered his son on the family farm in Maury County in 1855. I have the transcripts from his trial but we never knew what happened to him after that. In the past year, I located a newspaper article in which a $500 reward was offered for Denson and two other men who escaped from the Maury County Jail. Sometimes in census records and school records, the family name is recorded as Moon instead of Moore. Denson was married to Margarette "Peggy" Cook. I would appreciate your sharing any information you find. Sincerely, Mary C. 3. I am also descended from a Maury Co. Craig (Toliver Craig), but I believe you are from the other Craig line that was there. If your query is not answered, write to Craig Links, Ann Burton, 43779 Valley Road, Decatur, MI 49045. Ann has relinquished Craig Links to another person, but I'm sure she will be glad to point you in the right way. 1. Kenamore/Craig/Edwards/Gooch/McCafferty/McConnell, south Maury Co., late 1830s
    2. Margaret Kenamore/Kennemore/Kenemore/Kennemer/Cannimore was born in Maury Co. c. 1822 to William Kenamore and Mary Johnson, who lived near Bigbyville. William Kenamore and his family -- largely daughters -- were living in Civil District 7 in the 1838 school census, or roughly the time Margaret would have married. She married a Craig, according to a family story that is only verified because her mother left a bequest to Margaret Craig in her will in southwest Missouri in the late 1860s. In the 1838 census, two Craigs are shown as parents of schoolchildren in Civil District 7 -- James D. Craig and Robert Craig, whose name is marked out. Margaret and her husband apparently did not marry in Maury Co. because I can find no reference to her. Most of the Kenamore daughters appear to have married in nearby Giles Co., where the marriage records were largely destroyed in 1858 and 1864. By family legend, Margaret Kenamore was divorced from Craig, which likely explains why she is shown by the name Kenamore/Kinamore/Kennemer/Kinnenrope/etc. until the last census in which she appears, 1900 in Christian Co., MO. The Kenamores and their children lived in Maury Co. near Bigbyville until late 1852 when several of the married daughters, their families and father William Kenamore made the trek to southwest Missouri with a group of Maury Co. settlers that could have totalled close to 100 persons or more. William returned to Maury Co., but he, his wife and remaining children moved south of Springfield, MO near the first group of emigrants in 1854. The early 1850s emigrants from Maury to the Ozarks included Grant Allen Kenamore, James Wright Edwards, William Carroll Edwards, Wiley W. Hedgpeth, Thomas Threat/Thweatt Gooch, the children of James Green and Mary McCafferty, many of the Londons, David Ginger, Albert Beverly Stubblefield, John Armenius Mack and cousin John A. Mack, the Parton/Partins, Jared Ebenezer Smith and Patrick Gooch, son of the Rev. William Spraggins Gooch and nephew of Thomas Threat. Eventually, they were joined by Abner Johnson Jr., the son of Revolutionary War veteran Abner Sr. of Maury Co. and brother of Mary Johnson Kenamore. Is anyone tracing the Craigs of the Bigbyville-Southport area during the late 1830s or early 1840s who can identify which one married either a) a Kenamore, b) a Margaret or c) someone unknown? I look forward to hearing, too, from anyone researching the general Bigbyville area in the first half of the 19th century or the territory around Southport, where William C. McConnell (my gggg-uncle) was an early blacksmith until his death in May 1872. Thanks, Randy McConnell

    3. Hi! There is a Thomas Jones on the 1810 tax list of Maury County, Tennessee. I just saw this while looking for another person on this list. This list was published in the quarterly of HISTORIC MAURY Vol.XXXVIII, No.1 March, 2002, The quarterly was available to buy just a few months ago. I think it was the first tax list after Maury County TN was created. The address is MAURY COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY, Att: Corresponding Secretary, P.O. BOX 147, Columbia, TN 38402-0147 You may want to write the Society to ascertain the cost of the Quarterly and postage. 1. New Books of Interest For Maury County
    2. Rick Gray
    3. Hello to all my Maury County research folks. I work part time for a printing company in Mt. Pleasant in Maury County and have been interested in genealogy for many years now. I have helped a few people out through this board in times past and have had many of you help me out. Anyway my boss at the printing company has compiled 2 books (one with my aid) about the Mt. Pleasant area mostly. One of them is a pictoral type history of the area. It has old class pictures from Hay Long High School and pictures of various monuments and homes and buildings in the area. He has collected the photos for years. This book is only photos. The second book that he and I have worked on together is a book about Sandy Hook, a small community 3 miles sw of Mt. Pleasant in the SW portion of Maury County. It does have some history and family stories and stories of growing up in the area. Several stories of what it was like attending the 2 country schools in the area. Some of the stuff we have collected from other printed materials but many of the articles are new ones. The book also contains many photos that we have collected, some new ones, and many old ones contributed by others. He has also reprinted an out of print book about Hugh Cooper of Fishing Creek, South Carolina. The book deals in great part with the Cooper family of the Mt. Pleasant area and of Lewis County, Tennessee. He has done the book in paper back with comb binding. The book is 2 volumes. I do not remember the rules as to posting costs and all on the list so I will not do so. I just wanted to let those know about the books. Please do not respond to this here on the list, but respond to me by e-mail at rgray7824@charter.net so that we do not hinder others in finding the info they might need on their families. Thanks so much, and happy hunting. Rick Gray

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/0hB.2ACI/558 Message Board Post: I’m seeking any information/documentation showing that my ancestor William Kinchen MORROW is the same person as the W.K. MORROW showing up in the household of Samuel MORROW in the 1860 census of Maury Co, TN as wells as in the 1850 census of Giles County, TN. What I know: My gggf William Kinchen MORROW (b ~1830’s, d 1873) married my gggm Mary Elizabeth MCKISSICK (b 23 SEP 1863, d after 1900) in Maury County, TN 19 FEB 1865. Several old sources refer to William as “Capt” but I’ve never found any information about that. While several of Mary’s brothers served with the Confederate forces during the Civil War, two of her youngest brothers served in the same Union company of Samuel. I have seen several compiled genealogies that list Samuel as William Kinchen’s father, but none of them that I’ve seen so far had any documentation. In some of those compiled histories, William Kinchen is listed as moving out of state to Bolivar County, MS shortly after the murder of Samuel MORROW in Maury County by a band of masked men in Aug 1969. Some of the accounts of this murder make it sound like they might have been after Samuel’s children as well. Thanks in advance for anything you can share! Greg Morrow Austin Texas

    2. I'm still looking for information on my g-g-grandmother Nancy C. Walker from somewhere in the Maury-Marshall-Williamson Co area. If anyone could shed some light on her family, I would much appreciate it! I have no idea who her parents were or if she might have been married before marrying my g-g-grandfather Robert C. Ivie in 1842. She was born ca. Nov 1822 or 1823 in TN. She died betw 1903-1910 in Calloway Co, KY. She and Robert C. Ivie lived in Marshall Co, TN, prior to moving Calloway. She MAY have been Nancy C. Long Walker or Nancy C. Walker Long--the death certificate for William A. names her as Nancy Long; the death certificate for John L. names her as Nancy Walker. She is Nancy C. in the household of Robert C. Ivie in 1850, 1870, 1880, 1890 census; I haven't found the family in the 1860 C yet. Their 7 children were Margaret E. (b ca. 1844, TN), William A. (b 10/17/1845, TN), John Lewis (b 2/11/1848, TN), Thomas (ca. Sept 1849, TN), David Walker (b ca. 1855, TN), Mary A. (b ca. 1858, TN), Joseph Robert (b 4/6/1866, KY). Thanks! Sylvia
