I had a copy and apparently lost an entry from one of the Maury County Records wherein Thomas Grant was a witness to a transaction involving attorney James K. Polk. It would have occurred either in the 1820's or early to mid-1830's. If anyone has access to the books wherein the entry might have been recorded, I would appreciate lookup and the text entry. It was rather short as I remember, maybe 7-8 lines. Incidentally, I am seeking any information regarding Thomas Grant and wife Sarah Glover. Thomas was born about 1778, was noted in the county records starting in 1815 and died in Marshall County (the part of Maury that was carved out) in 1838. The primary focus of my search is his and Sarah's parents. His accounting prior to 1815 are still hidden. We don't know for sure where he came from or how he migrated to Tennessee. But, stories suggest he came from Scotland with 2 brothers as an indenture person. He was probably fairly young, if the story is true. One could surmise that his parents came from Scotland via England, but I have no way to prove that either. Two strong connections through the Grant DNA project indicate a prior connections to Grants who were in Canada at some point. I am just grasping at straws right now. David, I live in Jefferson City, MO where Drury Gooch, who married Patsy Whitehead, died in 1839. I know the local Whiteheads. As best I can tell Drury descended from James Gooch, son of William, son of Claiborne, who originated in Hanover Co., VA. I am interested in two apparent brothers -- William Spraggins Gooch, a minister, and Thomas Thweatt Gooch, a large-scale farmer. Their middle names suggest they were descendants of Rowland Gooch and Lively Thweatt of Caroline Co., VA and Granville Co., NC. Rowland's daughter Patsy married William Spraggins, and Thweatt is an extremely rare surname. Thomas T. Gooch appeared in Rutherford Co., TN by 1827 where he married Nancy Tennessee White, and he and William came to Maury Co. I don't believe they had any connection to Drury. Randy McConnell
A Drury Gooch married into my Whitehead family in Missouri about 1809, any relation? David Whitehead
Maury County,Tn., dist. 15. Two sisters with the middle name of "Ann" in their name. Martha Ann ALLEN , b. 1857, Wayne Co, TN., who went by the name of Ann ALLEN, age 23 in the 1880 Census of Maury County. By 1880 Ann was divorced with 2 children, and living with mother; Sarah BRADLEY ALLEN; age 48 widow. Children:Emma J. age 4,John W. Davis age 1. Not sure if they used the last name of DAVIS or ALLEN. In the census looks like DAVIS was crossed out.? And Betsy Ann ALLEN, b abt. 1860, used the name of Mollie ALLEN, Age 19 in 1880 census. Also, living with Sarah ALLEN were two half-brothers' of Mollie and Ann,; Willie 11, and Tom 8. When their father left in 1861 for the Civil War, Sarah was left with 6 children in Wayne Co.,TN., Cypress Inn. Children ranged in age from 10 to age 1. Sarah was trying to feed, clothe and shelter this family for years by keeping house and working for other families, in the Maury County,TN area. They had to get out of Wayne county, Cypress Inn, because of the War and living so close to the Alabama line. That area was devastated by the North and Southern troops crossing at that line. Willie had told his grandchildren that those times were so horrible, he stated that he did not care to talk about it. Sarah and Robert's children; William Thomas and Berry have not been located William was age 10 and Berry 7 when Robert went to war. I am trying to locate their burial places, especially Robert, I think he died in Mississippi. Am doing research on him at this time. Would appreciate any information on this family. If you need my address contact me and I will forward that to you. Anything to help my research. Thanks, Joyce --------------------------------- Talk is cheap. Use Yahoo! It's the right one. There are Rileys buried there, but unmarked, according to the cemetery records book and David. Since there is so much interest in the cemetery I will post the listing on my site. Give me until tomorrow, then look under "A few pages of the cememtery records . . ." Right after Cemetery Markers. There are just 2-3 pages for Delk. Pages 253 - 255. WARNING, most of the other pages are not posted, so if you click on them you will get an error. Here's the link. I should have them posted early tomorrow. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~genieresources/
David: It is only about 75 miles to Delk Cemetery from my house. I just returned form a visit there. I talked with the family that lives there. The family said they thought there may be RILEYs buried there, but I walked the cemetery and was unable to locate any. I am interested to know if we are talking about the same DELK Cemetery. As far as I know, and the family agrees, This is the only Delk Cemetery in Maury County. This Cemetery that I have visited is in Delk's Bend of the Duck River just below the Hickman Co. line, Kettle Mills, TN. Are we working in the same cemetery? Thanks for all the replies to my post. David
Thanks for the info Allen. I've recently upgraded to 25 markers and am awaiting results. I don't think I'll shell out any more money at this time for 37. Still, $200 worth of DNA is probably more valuable than the same amount in copy charges or travel doing other genealogy research. -Mark Quoting Allen Grant <sagrant@houston.rr.com>: > Mark... > > You will find that you will match with a large number of people when > comparing the first 12 markers. Mark... You will find that you will match with a large number of people when comparing the first 12 markers. If, in those first 12, your match has the same surname as your own, it MAY be significant. The next 13 markers become very significant, if you have an exact match for all 25 markers, regardless of surname. Of course, a perfect match is more significant with the same surname. Incidents of adoption, taking on the family name where someone moves in with a family, child born out of wedlock to someone with your surname, etc. can cause these other surnames to match. When you have 37 markers tested, it will refine the distance in time where you MIGHT connect. Most people's matches tend to distance themselves at this level of testing. I, for example, match 25/25 with a Grant in California, but we are 34/37. It would suggest that we are probably on the back end of the span of time that we may connect. In other words, the probability of a match may be more like 400 years than 200 years. Incidentally, we have not yet found the common link. I can trace back 5 generations and he can trace back 7 generations, but we have not identified any common families. Hope that helped. I was asked to give a little more info on the books for the list. I am sorry that it has taken me awhile. And thanks for all the concern for my Mother. She is finally back home after 25 days in the hospital. Anyway here is the basic stuff on the books: Looking Back in Time: Mt. Pleasant, Tennessee: estimate of about 100 pages; focuses mainly on photos; majority of the photos are of Mt. Pleasant, but a few pages feature other places in Maury County; about 80% of photos are identified; there are photos of Main Street through the years, many photos of various schools and functions with the schools, some homes, photo of the 1903 Confederate Veterans reunion (group photo), many photos from various things at Hay Long High School particularly the year 1930; photos of waterfalls near Mt. Pleasant, Senior class photos from Hay Long High School beginning 1928 with a year or two skipped here and there but continues through 1962. Many of these photos have never been published before. "Our Memories" of Sandy Hook, Pugh Town, Rockdale & Sheepneck: about 100 pages; lots of photos - some identified some not (possibly about 50% identified); features articles on the families and history of the area; also many folks wrote articles about their memories attending schools in the little country schools or living in the area; it is humorous, nostalgic, and historical at the same time; nice balance of history, nostalgia, and genealogy. I am still not sure if I am allowed to list prices here, so I will skip that. I know that some of you have already e-mailed me about the books. If I have not gotten back to you, I will soon. If you would like info on the books, pricing & ordering - just e-mail me.
