I just signed up for the Maury Co mail list and unless I am mistaken a couple of people are trying to unsubscribe me. If this is true please stop. I would like to give this site a try. In one day I have already found a possible connection to my family. I have received replies to my question from 3 people so I think there are volunteers on this list that want to help. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Never mind. It is now RootsWeb.com. A .com can't take money donations. A .org can. That must have changed in 2000 when they stopped taking donations, when Myfamily.com bought them. I never noticed it until now.
Ancestry takes subscriptions, not donations. It is $200 plus for the entire collection. Rootsweb might be different IF they still take donations. Contributions can be in the form of cash or as I prefer, material. If you have family material you would like to donate for other researchers down the road, please consider one of the many free genealogy sites out there. We can always use the help! Hi Gary--- NO WAY will YOU be barred from Rootsweb! and I too want to thank ALL volunteers.....including list moms and dads. YOU are the main reasons why I have over 13,000 persons [ not just names either] in my personal FTM and am finding more all the time. For my part I have helped only a little but still can do lookups in Fred's wonderful Maury County Cemetery books. I also contributed to Rootsweb for about 4 years , then they went in somehow with Ancestry.com and I don't know how or where to contribute now. Gary ,can you help us with an explanation and an addy for this? Thanks again everyone. Regards, Steph Powell Cecil stephaxi@mindspring.com .

Not sure if they do or not. I like the idea that they still provide free space, just wary of the connection with Ancestry and praying that they don't decide to all of a sudden renig and put charges on the sites already there or remove them. Man that would be a huge loss for folks. That is why I keep the Marshall & Maury Sites over at USGENNET. People like "me" run it. With Ancestry being their "daddy", I would think that they don't ask for donations any more. I don't ever remember seeing anything asking for it. Matter of fact, lets see, I have been in this since 98, and I don't remember ever seeing it. I will have to ask Pam if she remembers when Brian sold to MyFamily, that might be when we didn't see donations any more. Your kidding Joan? You don't sit in front of the computer waiting for that reply??? The first couple of times I asked for help for something I went crazy waiting for the answers!!!! Well, welcome to Genealogy.........and if you need help, hollar, don't know how to handle something......ask..........don't go leaving the group.......stay on, you NEVER know when someone else will show up with the answers to your questions.....the more you look though, the more people you find.....and the more find you........ And thank you for your look ups for others, I can't say that enough to people who do it. It is a great service! Have a great weekend, I hope you find some connections here sooner than later! I agree we should drop it. I was a little perturbed, but since you said "sorry", all is cool and forgiven. I think everyone should be a volunteer of sorts, sharing their primary records for free at least. There are a lot of researchers out there who horde information and take it with them to the grave apparently. Then no one in their family gets the genealogy bug and the information gets lost. Shame. Sharing is the best way to break down brick walls and solve those ancestral puzzles, and the internet has become a great tool for sharing. Caution, however, needs to be exercised when using internet or any info by someone else. There's a lot of false data out there as well. I'm sorry for the backlash on your original post. It is a southern custom, especially in Maury County, that when somebody does somethiing unusual they get a nickname. It has been the custom since the 1800s, that I know of for a fact, and probably worldwide since time began. Nicknames are not name-calling. Name-calling is when people get mad at each other. Nicknames are made up to have something to laugh about. One of my nieces once said, "Sometimes we have to laugh so we don't cry." Unfortunately, sometimes the old records show nicknames instead of real names. I remember a lot of people that I knew and grew up with by their nicknames and never knew their real names. On my site are 2 differing recollections of The Hanging of Gilbert Dowell. Many people are listed by nicknames. If you have not read it, it is worth reading. It is a lesson in how people forget exactly when something happened, over time; how people felt about the war; and why there was a lynching and its consequences, the dark side of Maury County. It looks like you're right. I don't see any independant donations since 2000 and I don't see any way to donate. I do remember some years ago they made an announcement saying they didn't need any contributions, but then I thought they changed it back. My mistake. I'm sorry.
Joan, I sent you 3 marriage records for Koonce yesterday, from early 1800 Maury. That's all I had, since I only have about 10% of the records. I suspect you did not receive them for one of the reasons I mentioned before. If you did not receive it let me know and I will post it on this board, since you seem to receive the board messages. That makes several messaages I suspect you never received.
I will start researching J. T. I have him in my family tree as son of Palestine Crett McCormick and Mary Daniels. They were married in Lawrence County, Tennessee. I have not followed J. T. yet. I believe Crett's second wife to be Josie Seaton, but not positive of this. I do have a marriage license from Maury County for a P. C. McCormick married to a J. A. Seaton in the correct time frame. Maybe the volunteer is on vacation.
By the way, I think Maury county has some of the most valuable researchers and volunteers there are in TN. Marshall County doesn't have near as many people who can do look ups on things. We just don't own the material. And on another thought, The pay cut thing just bit me because little do you folks realize, I spend my own money to access information for folks and I have never charged a dime. One lady sent me a book of stamps once because I refused any payment for sending her a copy of a census record. I am not the only one. I don't know if it were meant tongue in cheek, but for me to spend hundreds of dollars a year to gain access to information, I think that gives alot. I don't charge because it isn't in me. I could, I could charge away, get Microfilm delivered, run hundreds of copies of stuff.......but I would still be a Mother and wife first. Okay. Stop! I think this is going north on us. We, "family," as Paulette said we are family a while back, (and I agree) have been way too responsive to a message that should not have got a response in the first place. I should not have replied to it, but it felt good. I have seen message boards shut down when that happens, when it gets personal. RootsWeb depends on contributions. When was the last time you made one? They need to buy more unlimited space. Personally, I enjoy reading this stuff; but Rootsweb might not; for we are discussing personal feelings, here, not genealogy. The volunteers have been toughened to this sort of thing. We apperciate your sympathy, but send it off-line, please. No matter how ungrateful or impatient people get, we will ramain volunteers. The original message did not offend me or the other volunteers in the least. We are tough. I would hate to lose Joan of Impatience; but I would hate even more to lose the message board. Joan, you might by now be a little embarra**ed. I have been a lot more embara**ed, got even worse nicknames, and made a comeback. Let's see what you are made of. Come back. We need all the people we can get. If not, goodbye, and I hope you get some use for the marriage records I sent you today, assuming that is what Paulette and Bettye June were too busy to send. It was nice knowing y'all. I will surely be barred from the board.
Sure, whatever pay cut you think we deserve since we are volunteers! Does that mean you'll help take some on?
