Thank you for sharing that on Audie Murphy, Mark. It's always good to see thorough research. And, you're right about it being a lot easier today. I look forward to the day when ALL the source material is on-line, maybe even the Maury County stuff.
Joyce, the Witherspoons migrated from VA to KY to Maury County with the Hanks, Dodsons, and others. Some of them stayed in KY, some moved to other places. Robert B Allen was born in Maury County. His father was William Allen, from NC. His mother was Nancy Unknnown, William Allen's 2nd wife. Robert Allen married Elizabeth Jane Hanks 20 Aug 1845. She was dau. of Elijah Hanks and Mary Woolverton. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~genieresources/ Follow that link, click on Family Trees. You'll find it all there. If you want ancestors of this Robert Allen I can send it to you. Not sure we are talking about the same one though. I don't know of one who married a Nancy Hanks.
My Robert ALLEN was in the Civil War, from Wayne County,Tn., his family moved to Maury County TN., about the time he left for the war, (1861) he ws in the hospital in Mississippi and I have sent for records as to what year he died. His wife was in the Maury County 1880 Census as a widow, 48, head-of -houshold. Her name was Sarah BRADLEY-ALLEN, she had 6 children when she left Wayne county, a baby of 1 year up to son of 10. She had to go to work as a housekeeper to keep bread on the table, and anything else she had to do. I have located some of my ALLEN kin in Maury County,TN., and Lawrence\County,TN., That generation of my people really never did overcome the effects of the war and most of the children were seperated. I cannot locate them after 1880 census of Maury. I do not know when Sarah died there are no records. THE OTHER ALLEN line The Robert ALLEN that I was referring to was married to Nancy Hanks (i believe) and Granville ALLEN was looking for a Robert ALLEN who was related from ALLENS in Alabama. Granville died over a year ago, and I was just wondering if this one might be the one he was searching for. Granville ALLEN has a book entitled "OUR ALLENS FROM MARYLAND TO MUSCLE SHOALS VIA THE MID-WEST". joyce Danielle <figurere8er@verizon.net> wrote: Name: Robert Allen SSN: 420-38-9018 Last Residence: 38464 Lawrenceburg, Lawrence, Tennessee, United States of America Born: 20 Mar 1930 Last Benefit: 38464 Lawrenceburg, Lawrence, Tennessee, United States of America Died: 16 Oct 1987 State (Year) SSN issued: Alabama (Before 1951 ) I found several so far Robert aliens. social security numbers so far, need more information to get something. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Joyce Luna" To: Sent: Monday, July 31, 2006 8:14 PM Subject: [TNMAURY-L] ALLEN, WITHERSPOON, > Do not mean to interupt........................a good thing but needed to > ask a few questions. > > Seems that in the Old Historic Maury there was a HANKS lady who married a > Robert ALLEN, was he from Alabama or does anyone know his lineage. > > WITHERSPOONS ..........were they from Ky? > > I worked with a Kay DAWSON and her family was part of the ALLEN AND HANKS > line, one of her aunts had gone to Washington in the 1960's and had > information > on their connection witha the HANKS. > Kay was from Maury County, TN., I am not sure if it this connection was > on her > mother or father's side of the family. > > joyce > > > JOYCE LUNA > > --------------------------------- > Do you Yahoo!? > Get on board. Do not mean to interupt........................a good thing but needed to ask a few questions. Seems that in the Old Historic Maury there was a HANKS lady who married a Robert ALLEN, was he from Alabama or does anyone know his lineage. WITHERSPOONS ..........were they from Ky? I worked with a Kay DAWSON and her family was part of the ALLEN AND HANKS line, one of her aunts had gone to Washington in the 1960's and had information on their connection witha the HANKS. Kay was from Maury County, TN., I am not sure if it this connection was on her mother or father's side of the family. joyce JOYCE LUNA --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Get on board. I sent that before I was done, Joyce. I have one family tree on my site under Family Trees. Descendants of Thomas Dodson and Elizabeth Rose. You'll find the family you're looking for in there. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~genieresources/

Gary, I like your post and way of thinking on getting primary documentation (or transcripts thereof). I believe with the advent of DNA technology and the internet, all of our genealogy brick walls will soon be broken down, if the science and knowledge is used correctly and honesty. One day I decided to do a line on Audie Murphy. Spent a couple of days on Ancestry, other internet sites and in the library. Here's my logic so far on him: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~freshnup/markmurph/text/10.1.39M.tx t This doesn't have anything to do with Maury Co., but just showing that in two days I gathered more info than could be done in a month probably in the old days, waiting on courthouse steps for them to open, going to FHCs, etc. I was thinking about doing Eddie Murphy just to see if we are related. Might do some Elvis now if I can get the time. Best thing about Ancestry is that you can get copies of censuses and other records online. I used to be mad when they started charging for everything, but have changed my tune. They host Rootsweb, which hosts my site, so I best stop complaining about commercializing genealogy. Soon I'll post again a little synopsis of the Murphey boys and girls from Maury Co., as it has been a couple of years since I've done so, and there may be new folks on here interested. Good hunting, Mark Murphy -----Original Message----- From: Gary Hood [mailto:garyhood@egyptian.net] Sent: Sunday, July 30, 2006 3:09 PM To: TNMAURY-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [TNMAURY-L] RE: Knob Creek it is If I remember right, Elvis' ancestor tree is on Rootsweb where all the others are. I don't know which one it was. If you search on him you get a million choices. Best I remember it was like all the rest, sketchy and with no source citations, but there is bound to be some truth to it. I don't remember which Hanks line or anything now. I'm just a Appalachian American (formerly known as hillbilly), Ann, and don't know much about DNA, but from what I heard on CSI or maybe PBS an old envelope would have lost its DNA years ago. Same for his bones or other remains. I could be wrong about that. Maybe a somebody smart will read this and tell us for sure. We have kin who are well educated in all kinds of things. I think the did get DNA from King TUT, or some other mummy, but that is a case where it was well preserved and still had yucky stuff in it. Be sure to include in your book the story about Elijah Newton Hanks, called Newton, and his nephew Elijah Newton, called Elijah. Elijah moved to Kansas and joined the Union Army. Newt stayed in Maury and joined CSA. They met after a battle in KS while both sides were removing the dead from the field. They asked permission to visit a while and it was refused by both sides. They never saw each other again, far as I know. There's more on the site in the Dodson descendants about that, but it is not the full story. There's more somewhere else, but I don't remember where I got it. That was in the days before I realized the importance of source citations. While you're at it, feel free to use whatever source documents you want from my site. If there's anything else I didn't post, you need, that I might have, and can send you for it, holler. ==== TNMAURY Mailing List ==== SOUTHERN HERITAGE NEWS AND VIEWS is dedicated to the preservation of Southern Heritage and to defend the honor of our Confederate ancestors.
