His wife's name is given as SUSAN, with the following children: THOMAS J. [1832]; WILLIAM [1834]; SAMUEL [1838]; ISAAC [1841]; ABNER [1845]; SUSAN ELLA [1847]; AND JAMES [1849]. William Mitchell (1768-1815) first son of John, also was a farmer and had slaves as well. His wife, Elizabeth Singleton Dabbs, is also kin to the Fosters. William joined and fought against the Indians with the Virginia Militia. They moved to Maury County, Tennessee in 1809 and brought with them 8 children. Four more were born in Tennessee. Possibly the land was worn out, overcrowding in Virginia, who knows. One fact is certain. The roads were crude or nonexistent. The Indians were a constant hostile threat, as was getting sick or hurt with no medical treatment available to them. William's brothers, James, Thomas and John seemed to have joined with them and migrated to Maury County as well. William's sisters all stayed in Virginia, and not much more is known, other than what is printed herein. William died suddenly in September of 1815 in Maury County. Elizabeth lived with her youngest son Josiah until her death after the 1850 Census. While no markers of their graves can be found, I believe they are buried in the Mitchell-Davis Cemetery in Columbia, Tennessee, where Josiah is known to be buried. This cemetery is being systematically destroyed due to a housing subdivision going up and around it. Graves markers have been removed for paving stones, etc. The last plot where there are still markers standing has a "For Sale" sign on it. At least four of William's grandson's fought in the C.S.A. against the Federal troops. Two were known to be killed. Info I received from Robert Darrell Mitchell: It is rumored the Mitchells immigrated to the Colonies in the late 1600's to early 1700's from Scotland. What is proven at this point is John Mitchell was born in Charlotte, Virginia in 1734. Possibly some of his brothers fought in the Revolution, unknown at this time. John Mitchell (1734-1783) was a wealthy man and married into a wealthy and long and notable lineage family. Mary Foster was the great Granddaughter of Kings, Lords, Barons, Countesses and Knights. The Fosters were from England. Her Singleton ancestors were also a wealthy family with extensive land holdings in Virginia. John apparently was a tobacco farmer in Virginia and had eight slaves. They lived in a two story log home near Fort Mitchell. According to a Virginia book on early settlers the latter was named after him. Unknown at present where they are buried. Mary died in 1782. I thought it has some interesting complications for those of us who are used to helping each other and are sometimes a little gullible about commercial sites. Jean Genealogy Web Site Sells Your Name and E-mail Address It's a tough world. Lots of businesses sell their customer lists these days. The result is that you get junk mail and marketing phone calls from all sorts of companies trying to sell you something you probably don't want. The newest twist is "spam mail", unwanted e-mails that advertise all sorts of junk. Now a well-known genealogy Web site is contributing to the spam mail that you receive and apparently is profiting from personal information that they obtain from you under the guise of helping you do genealogy research. In fact, the Web site apparently is a "front", as the main purpose seems to be gathering personal information about you and then selling that information. The Family Tree House Web site at http://www.usaafter.com claims that it is "the Association for FamilyTree Enrollment and Registry." The home page says, "This site offers free family tree software and links to key genealogy sites. The software is available on-line. You can build your FamilyTree House in real time, no downloading is required." They also say, "...you can create and register your own on-line FamilyTree. And because it is on-line, you can enlist the help of other family members by giving them your personal access code to allow them to fill in the missing branches--it's a project the whole family can participate in no matter where they live." On another page the site advises, "When requesting information, please make sure you include your name, mailing address and the information you would like." After they collect all the personal information from you and your other family members, the owners of Family Tree House apparently package the information and sell it to other companies that send junk mail or spam e-mails. On a different Web site, the owners of Family Tree House offer "a file of 33,600 last-12-month registrants of the Family Tree House, an association that offers Web site members free software and links to genealogy sites." The file they sell reportedly contains information about each person's date of birth, gender, e-mail address, state and ZIP code. The Web advertisement says that the file contains listings for 33,600 people who have left personal information on the Family Tree House site. The dates on My Francis Moody was around 1825-1829 when they went to Lawrence County, Alabama at Moulton. I have my gggGrandMother Joanna in the 1830 census of Lawrence County. I found my gggUncle Marshall M. Moody in Giles County, Tn in the 1830's. He moved to Haywood County, Tn. Looking for Francis Moody or my ggggUncle Francis Moody of Va who moved to Tn before my gggGrandFather. Thanks for coming back on my ancestors. Mary was the daughter of Samuel Chaffin and Elizabeth McConnell, who were married c. 1838 in Maury TN, and the granddaughter of William and Susannah Coleman Chaffin and Walter and Mary Elizabeth Parker McConnell, both of Maury.
