FCC Again Says It Won't Tax Internet (11/07/98 9:58 a.m. ET) By Reuters About once a year for the past three years, word has spread that the Federal Communications Commission was about to regulate or tax the Internet, triggering a deluge of protests by people all over the country. Trouble is, the agency has never moved to become the overseer or taxman of cyberspace and says it has no desire to do so. It happened again this week, when an upcoming FCC decision over how local telephone carriers pay each other for exchanging traffic was widely misinterpreted as having some bearing on Internet regulation or fees. The decision is expected to be released later this month. Some consumer groups charged the FCC's expected decision would require that per-minute charges imposed on long-distance calls be imposed on calls connecting computer users to the Internet. With the volume of protests rising, FCC Chairman William Kennard issued a statement on Friday declaring the issue "has NOTHING to do with consumer Internet charges." The agency first decided in the 1980s to exempt calls to Internet service providers from charges associated with long-distance calls and reaffirmed the policy as recently as April. "The FCC has repeatedly stated for the past decade -- and is stating again today -- that it is NOT repealing the ISP exemption that Internet service providers from paying per-minute charges to local telephone companies," Kennard added, using capital letters for emphasis. Madison Murry Mitchell (1831-1918) was the fourth son of A. D. and was a twin. He was born and died in Culleoka, Maury Co, TN. His wife Elizabeth Toombs' parents were from Virginia. Her grandfather John D. Toombs donated the land for the Friendship Baptist Church and the cemetery, where he, along with his son, John H., Elizabeth's father and Madison Murry are buried. John D.'s log cabin once stood 100 yards from where he is now buried. His brother was Marshall Murry, who hasn't been located since his marriage to Nancy Carter. Madison and Elizabeth had 8 children and raised them on their large farm on Sheepneck Rd., in Culleoka. A new house now stands (new owners) where the old one was. Madison and Elizabeth share a very nice marker in the Friendship Baptist Cemetery. There are descendants of Madison still living on Sheepneck Rd. Roy Henry Mitchell, Lucy and Catherine Holt. Burnice (Mitchell) Punkins lives at the end of Shepneck and across the paved street from her brother Roy Henry. Culleoka is Indian for "sweet water". Would anyone have any reference to a marriage of James McFarland and Mary Polly Hall 23 April, 1810, Maury Co TN. Thanks, Mary Lou

I am interested in a Mitchell family who possibly has William Dungan listed in their household as an adopted son. This is one of many articles I've found, and yet to find two who agree on where this Mitchell family came from. This one states Illinois. William Dungan b. 1799 PA was the father of Nathan Dungan and father-in-law of Lillys Hamilton of Maury Co. TN. This article published in GOODSPEEDS info provided by Thomas Mason Dungan, brother of Nathan Dungan. Rev. William A. Dungan was born in Madison County, Tenn., in 1840, and is a son of Thomas M. and Nancy M (Mason) Dungan, and grandson of William Dungan. The latter was born in Illinois and was left an orphan in his infancy and was adopted by a Mr. Mitchell. He was brought to Tennessee in his youth and here resided until his death in 1850 (Madison Co.). Thomas M. Dungan was born in Williamson County (now Maury Co.). I believe William Dungan was born in PA not Illinois as stated in many other source documents. Appreciate any help if one notes him being in the household of a Mr. Mitchell? Thanks, Pat

Abijah Davis Mitchell (1797-1891) was born in Virginia, moved to Tennessee with his parents, met and married Mary Polly Wells. Mary's lineage goes back to North Carolina. It was originally thought A. D. only had two children, but a thorough search of the surrounding counties revealed he lived in Marshall County, Tennessee, and they had ten children. I (Robt. D. Mitchell) have a copy of his will where he apparently cut one of his daughters, Elizabeth Jane Montgomery, completely out of his will. He was also listed on the 1850 AG Census which showed him to own 4 slaves, various other animals, 350 bushels of corn and 1750 bushels of wheat. He must have had a sizeable place. I have been to A.D. & Mary's graves. They are buried in Wells Cemetery in Culleoka, Maury County, located on Red Martin's place. The Cemetery is in deplorable condition, sitting in the middle of a cow pasture where the cows can roam all through it. The markers are getting faint and hard to read, weeds and thorns are covering the spot. When A. D. died he was the oldest living person in Marshall County, Tennessee, and was well thought of by the county's peoples. He was known as "Uncle Davis Mitchell". He was a member of the Friendship Baptist Church in Culleoka and was baptized when he was 90 years old. He broke two ribs several weeks before his death. He told a newspaper reporter prior to this accident he had never laid in bed for sickness a whole day in his life. Captain Hamilton raised a company of cavalry which became part of the second Tennesee Battalion, later part of the First Tennessee Regiment. Williams joined Hamilton's Company. 1861-66 Williams and Hamilton are stationed in Mississippi involved in the retreat from Atlanta and Gen. Joseph Wheelers's raid through Middle Tennessee. 1865-66 After the War, Williams returned to Columbia, Tennessee, where he took ownership in drugstore with his half-brother William H. Williams. The business was destroyed by fire. 1867 Williams married Annie Caroline White of Spring Hill, Tennesee. They had four children. ------ Began farming on the Hamilton land, buying and increasing the estate. 1880-1922 Member of the Leonidus Polk Bivouac, Number 3, and William Henry Trousdale Camp, Number 495 of Confederate Veterans in Columbia, TN 1887- Death of his adoptive father, John B. John Bell Hamilton was born in Williamson County, Tenn., October 29, 1807. He was first married to Miss Sarah Ann Alderson, by "whom" he had two children, a son and daughter, both of whom are now dead. His second marriage was to Mrs. W. H. Lucas of Nashville, Tenn., with whom he lived in great affection until his death which occurred in the city Marych 14, 1887. More later- Pat

David married Catherine Bailey 1804 in Greene Co, TN. He was on the 1805 Greene Co, TN Tax list, and on the 1810 Barren Co, KY census. By 1820 he was in Maury Co, TN and still there for 1830 census, and he died there as well. I hope you saw my report on James Harvy MACK and his descendents I put out a few days ago and I hope it was helpful to you. 3. Chuck, where did you get the death date (Nov 1 1816) for John MACK? The only reference that I have, or have seen, is the writing on his tombstone. If you calculate that, it arrives at 1814. Don't get me wrong. I do not doubt you. I just want to be in on it.
