    1. [TNMAURY-L] Accidental Entry of data to FTM
    2. Allan Patrick
    3. I have often noticed how easy it would be for information to be submitted to FTM accidentally. I don't think I have done it yet, but when that screen comes up after every hundred or so entries that says "would you like to submit this information now...?" I think," wow !" how easy it would be for info to be submitted before you intend that it should. Has anyone else noticed this? .. And if you did accidentally hit "yes" instead of "no" would there be any further confirmation of what you have done? Just wondering!?! Tania

    1. [TNMAURY-L] Citing Sourcees
    2. Eugene L. Atkin
    3. Hi, I suspect that this problem deserves a high profile among genealogists. During genealogy is a lot like doing a term paper, where sources must be cited. Putting information up on the web is in effect publishing it. Taking the work of others, without acknowledging its source, as if it were your own, is against the law. Whether primary sources, like public legal records, or secondary, like e-mail messages from another genealogist, sources must be acknowledged. 1. [TNMAURY-L] Looking for James WHITE - Maury Co.Tn.
    2. Don Webber
    3. Please post the following for me, and many thanks for all your good works. James WHITE was a prominent citizen of Maury County in the years of about 1810 to 1829 or so. He was a friend of President James Knox Polk. However when he died, the rest of his family left Tennessee for Arkansas. I have noticed that a number of families took the same route at about the same time. What was happening in Maury County at that time, 1829, to bring about that exodus. I know that Arkansas was opening up about then, but why leave such an idyllic place, and in such numbers ? Secondly, I wonder if some very helpful person could possibly check into cemetery records or obituaries for James WHITE's birth and death dates and places. I will be eternally grateful for any information as will my Webber family here in California. You could post here or e-mail me at fathiker@volcano.net. Don

    1. Re: [TNMAURY-L] Sharing info
    2. I have to agree with Janis. I am very pleased to have my family's history on the Web. I have never come across anyone who wanted to restrict access to their genealogy, although I understand that someone who makes a living with this would feel pretty proprietary about their data. I don't understand the mentality of anyone who wants to "hoard" their data; I would think they would be more than pleased to share it with anyone who is taking the time and effort to research their family. HOWEVER, if anyone ever asks me NOT to use anything they send me, I certainly will respect their wishes...but I sure won't understand why they feel that way. OK, there's my 2 cents worth. Monty

    2. Joan Rogers
    3. Dear List Members: Thank you to everyone who responded for my Coons cemetery request lookup [Fred, Claude, and MAWGEN@aol.com]. I would like to repost the message and ask again because as pointed out by Janis, Coons has multiple spellings. Here is the message reposted with multiple spellings. Thank you in advance for your response. Also, I would like to add my comments to the posting of information without recognition of the original source. I have had this happen to me and it does feel like the spirit of cooperation you are operating under is being compromised. I read in the weekly RootsWeb news [I think this was the source] of a comment by someone who actually wrote and stated "so what's the big deal. It's free information." The writer did not get the point of recognizing the efforts of the researcher. REPOSTING: Dear List Readers: Does anyone have a copy of Maury County, Tennessee Cemeteries, and would you be willing to do a look up for me? I am trying to find John Coons. He supposedly had a daughter, Lauria [has been spelled multiple ways], who was born circa 1813 in Maury County, Tennessee. I do not have any other information. Also, if anyone has any information on Coons in Maury County, I would appreciate any leads or direction. Multiple spellings for COONS: COON, COONS, KOON, KOONS, KUHN, KOONCE, KOONTZ, COUNCE, and even MAC COON. Is any one else researching this family? Thank you in advance. 1. Re: [TNMAURY-L] Citing Sourcees
    2. While not ethical it is not always illegal. When I share information, I do one of two things. 1)Only give information that do not care if it gets published. or 2)Make it very clear that you are not giving them the right to publish the information in any manner. In example: 1)I only give the names but no places or dates. 2)I say something that means basically this. "This information is for your personal use only. I am not conveying any right to publish any part of this information using electronic or other means." Both of these make some people angry. I am currently compiling a book and I use these tactics about 5-10 times a day. When I ask people to share information with me, I say something like. "I am compiling a book. Please do not send any information you do not want included in the book. If you do send information to me that you do not want published please mark it clearly on every copy of the information you send me." By the way I also save a paper copy of every e-mail in case there is a problem later. Mike

    3. The same thing happened to me. I shared some information with another researcher in the form of a GEDCOM which contains all of the research material involving each particular individual, only to find it posted verbatim on a website as the person's own research and not a mention anywhere that it came from me. I love to share my data, but one should give credit where credit is due. It is also nice to know who did the research originally so if a mistake is found the original researcher could be contacted. -----Original Message----- From: MaryLReed@aol.com <MaryLReed@aol.com> To: TNMAURY-L@rootsweb.com <TNMAURY-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Saturday, December 12, 1998 10:38 PM Subject: [TNMAURY-L] Re: TNMAURY-D Digest V98 #291 >This same problem has happened to me, and I don't know what to do about it. Posterity will then know a lot more about HIS character than it will about your family details that you would rather not have published. (Careful that you stick to the FACTS though). Monty
