As cities and congregations grew, burial yards were established in outlying areas. These cemeteries may have index cards listing information about those buried on their premises. You also will find published abstracts of thousands of church, public, and family cemeteries in large archives and libraries with genealogy collections. Also search mortuary records. Morticians kept detailed records for accounting purposes. In some places, morticians or funeral directors gathered the information recorded on the death certificate, obtained burial permits, and arranged to ship the deceased to their next-of-kin. If you know where a relative died, check "The Red Book," published by the National Directory of Morticians <http://www.funeral-dir.com/home_page.htm> for the names and addresses of morticians and funeral directors in that location. You may also find the name of the undertaker or funeral home on the death certificate. If the mortuary is no longer in business, its files may be in the custody of the county clerk, the local library, or the local historical society. In the files you may find funeral or burial registers, funeral books, funeral cards, and even telegrams or correspondence to the next-of-kin. Those records may contain the deceased's date and place of birth, date and place of death, parents' names and residence, spouse's name and residence, occupation, military service, religious affiliation, fraternal organizations, and survivors. If possible, capture an electronic image of that document. It is a snap to add it to your Ultimate Family Tree data and then print it in your family history. * * * * * PERMISSION TO REPRINT articles from ROOTSWEB REVIEW is granted unless specifically stated otherwise, PROVIDED (1) The reprint is used for non-commercial, educational purposes. I have a Great-great-grandfather John Craig Johnston who was born near Mt Pleasant, Maury County in 1816 or 19, don't have records in front of me. His grandfather was John Johnston who fought in Revolutionary War and came to Tn from North Carolina. Does this sound like your Johnstons? Don't know anything about a David Reed, but I am also looking for some Reid/Reeds. I have a John Nolen who married a Sarah Reid Beck on 6/28/1836. Her mother was supposedly Anna Reid. I have no other information and don't know if this does you any good or not. Both John and Sarah indicated that they were born in NC in a census taken in Gallitin Co., Ill in 1860. Believed to have been born in TN, but have conflicting info that indicates birthplace to be VA, also NC. I have documented (copy of a court record) that in 1797 he lived in Sumner Co., TN., where he married Elizabeth (?Meekley). Their first 6 children were reportedly born in Williamson, Smith, and Maury countys. Family history states that they lived "on the Duck river, near Roundtree's Mill". Mary, does your Roundtree information have any information that they owned a mill, on the Duck River? Does anyone else have any idea where "Roundtree's Mill" was located?? Any help is greatly appreciated, Avery H. Hensley, Jr. Clovis, CA

Hi Deb, I would like to find my Skinner line that connects to the Malicoat line but I know if I ever get it I am going to have to run it down for myself. There was a man named Ray who wrote to me about the Skinner line but he seems to think I know all about them and really got smart with me when I told him I didn't have any information except the little I sent him. So I don't really care if I have his help or not. I Just had a letter from a really nice lady named Barbara who is also researching the Malicoat line. She is a writer of Romances. She writes for Harlequin and I picked up one of her books today at Walmarts. She writes under the name Anne McAllister. I think that is very interesting. Her husband teaches at a community college. She researches and writes books. My son has some stuff thats been published too. Except he writes stuff like civil rights and the death penalty. He did write for a magazine in New Mexico that was stories on people of history like Billy the Kid and other good and bad men. I thank you for offering to help me.Did I ask you where you live? I live in OK. and am extracting obituaries from Middle Tennessee newspapers. Sincerely, Maxine Reggio 7205 NW 46 St. Bethany, Ok 73008 At 07:25 PM 1/14/1999 -0500, you wrote: >Good. Does anyone know where I can get a copy of the Maury County Century Review? thanks. pat Griffin wpgpjg@aol.com
Hi , You can't go wrong with Wilmas book I have a copy and she is doing another that I want to get a copy of just as soon as she gets it done. She has a lot of birth and death records and a lot of newspaper stories (they do not always give the date or name of the paper) It really is a good book though. I have heard some wo say there are some mistakes but we all do that (I wish I was perfect). I am sorry I didn't mention that to you Sincerely, Maxine At 01:01 PM 1/14/1999 -0500, you wrote: >Maxine, > >I just today ordered a book on the Mallicoat family written by Wilma >Mallicoat. Barbara, Mail to your address was returned. I believe the reason you have more than one birth and death date for Mary E. Narcisus SPARKMAN who married James Lawrence MCKEEL on 4 Jan 1849, is due to the fact that these records belong to: 1. Mary SPARKMAN, m. MCKEEL 2. Narcissa SPARKMAN , m. 1. Jay GODWIN, m. 2. Green JACK Both were sisters of my Nancy Jane SPARKMAN and all 3 were children of Williams SPARKMAN and Elizabeth VESTAL. Mitzi

The Daugherty I have is Nancy Daugherty b ca 1809 NC married James Caudle 1827. I believe she had one known brother and sister. Kary Ann Daugherty married James G Harris his first wife and then Susan A Hill Harris 2nd. Richard Daugherty brother/ I'm very interested in finding more info on Daugherty. origin of name ect.. I find it odd that there are Daugherty inTN at this time as I have read that this name if irish decent did not come into TN until 1840"s Susan Hill Harris; Her mothers maiden name was dickson born in GA. I'm also interested in this line as well. If I could find the relatives of James G Harris I think I could find the answere I need. Many thanks Dani
