    3. 1 Edmondson --no Chennault I am going to do another book later. These are from three rolls of microfilm. I have three more to go thru. Maxine McWhirter, Watson New Era Newspaper Thursday January 27 , 1876 Fatal Accident — A Boy Killed Caney Fork, Jan, 11th , 76 by Editor of New Era; As I for some time past have been and are still stuck off down here in the north part of old Warren in the literary " sanctum" with the children of this neighborhood, I have been busy, and consequently my pen has been silent. But as there occurred a fatal accident near my school today I have deemed it prudent to give the facts to your readers. Watson McWhirter, son of George McWhirter, accidently shot and killed himself this morning. Some of the neighbor boys were going to kill hogs, and McWhirter's folks were going to assist them. Watt, who was I suppose about 15 or 16 years old, took the gun and set off before the rest, and was waiting at the river for the canoe to be brought over, when the accident occurred. Wash Perkins was carrying the canoe, and was near the bank, when he heard the report of the gun, but was not looking at Watson. But from the manner in which he was shot it is supposed that he placed his foot on the hammer of the gun, and went to blow in the muzzle, when his foot slipped off, and the gun was discharged, the ball knocking out two or three of his upper front teeth, and entering the roof of his mouth, ranged toward the occipital bone, and produced death in about two hours.
