    3. The front page of THE VIRGINIA GAZETTE of Oct. 11, 1776 lists a John MACK of Pittsylvania Co. as being suspected of being an enemy to the rights and liberties of America & refusing to take the oath. Is this our John(b. 1740 Scotland)? Research of the Gazette files might turn up more. HE was my 4g grandfather. (I have photo of his son Wm MACK)

Since you did not adddress your e-mail to anyone in particular, I forgot for a moment that Maxine also has a cemetery book for sale. Her's is centered in Warren County but includes some obituaries from other counties. Mine lists the cemeteries of Maury County only. Take care. Fred.

Dear Joan, Maury County was carved from Willilamson County by the Tennessee Legislature on 24 Nov 1807. Until 7 Jan 1906, the territory south of the Harpeth Hills, north of Duck River, was considered Indian territory and off limits to settlers. A few probably entered the area and built crude log cabins, planted small crops, etc. prior to 1806 but they were not many and their names have pretty well been lost. When the treaty was signed, ceeding the lands all the way to Alabama to the U.S.A., settlers began to pour into the territory and within a year there were enough inhabitants for the state to create the new county. Hope this helps. Lottaluck. Fred.

    1. Re: [TNMAURY-L] SPEERS, Lee/THROOP
    2. Pat Speers
    3. Karen, Thanks much. The only thing I have to tie Lee SPEERS to Maury Co. is the place of birth on Muster Roll when he enlisted in Aug 1862 as an Illinois Volunteer. It gives his age as 44. The birth date computed from transcription of info on tombstone is 16 May 1820. If there’s an error it could be 1818 and the age would match. I know he married Eliza THROOP. It was probably her second marriage and I guess it could be his second. That’s why I asked who he married. I know there were THROOPs in Maury Co. early, but I don’t know any more about them before Illinois. I’m guessing the marriage was in Illinois. That’s my second question. Can anyone tell me anything about the THROOPs in Maury Co.? I know a Madison SPEER bought land in Illinois in 1834 but he wasn’t there long enough to be on a census. I haven’t connected Lee and Madison. That’s all I know about Lee until after his marriage.. Maybe we can get these folks together.
