Hi. I'm new to this list, so I thought I'd post some surnames. The families I'm researching in Maury County and vicinity are MCFADDEN, WILSON, and HASSELL from 1800-1846. Other surnames connected to these families by marriage are: ERWIN, IVERSON, COMPTON, PEELER, MAY, MIMS. If anyone is interested in any of these families, I'd be glad to hear from you. I still find this "odd" if you will. My mother was a Mary.....NEVER heard this till genealogy! Ah......the joys of this wonderful sport of "hide and seek"! Thanks everyone for answering! Dear List Members: I would like to ask [and remind] everyone [direct quote from the Roots Web Welcome 1 Message]: "If you are seeking information about a family, include the surname in UPPERCASE in the message subject. Many readers do not have time to read the contents of all messages... Use UPPERCASE for each surname the first time you use it in a message. Please put the maiden name of the wife also in UPPERCASE, as they will be so much easier to spot." More and more we are not doing this [myself included], and it makes it very difficult to find and focus on the relevant family. WE are right now facing all the people who did not know Mollie or Molly/Polly et al are nicknames for Mary. It used to be real common. My daughter is planning on naming her baby due in May, Mary Catherine for both grandmothers, and call her Mollie. You just would not believe the people her generation who not only don't kow Mollie is a normal nickname for Mary, think naming her for her grandmothers is QUAINT! She is doing it anyway! ;-) (Proud grandmama grin) Catheriine
Also, "Ann" sometime used for Nancy, "Lisa" for Elizabeth, and "Jean" & "Jane" used interchangeably.
Yes, "Polly" was a popular nickname for Mary.

Hi, Richard, You will most likely receive lots of answers to your question! Yes, Polly was a nickname for Mary just as Sally was a nickname for Sarah. How they got from one to the other is another mystery. Happy hunting. Hi Judy, It used to confuse me too. Polly is a nickname for Mary. It doesn't make much sense to me but that is the way it goes. A lot of the stuff I find in my research doesn't make much sense. >>Is this Julia, dau of Andy Culberson, also the dau of Mary (Polly) Fitzgerald >>who married Andrew Culberson 7 Apr 1828 Someone posted this to the Maury County list. Trying to find out of more about Culberson's. Also does anyone know the date the Century Review of Maury County was written or the information gathered? in particular on page 294 there is a reference to J.A. McNabb - I sure would like to know when that information was written about Julia A. Culberson. Her dad Andy Culberson was spoken of in the past tense - need to know when he died. Thanks, Gene
Does anyone know if they still publish the Journal of North Carolina Genealogy or same by a different title. I know that the first issue was in March of 1955 and the title was "The North Carolinian, A Quarterly Journal of Genealogy and History." By 1962 it was titled "Journal of North Carolina Genealogy". The editor was William Perry Johnson. Also, does anyone know if Mr. Johnson is still alive? He lived in Raleigh, N.C.. Thanks, Marsha :)
