    1. [TNMAURY-L] Bell/Wells
    2. Susan
    3. All this talk about the Bell family has me wondering if anyone has seen this family associated with the Wells family. I have a Susannah Bell who married James Alfred Wells. Both were born in TN, but I don't know which county. Maury is a strong possibility as other branches of the family came from Maury Co. Susannah was born about 1820. By 1853, they moved to Pope County, Illinois. So, any Susannahs or Wells' out there? Anyone have family move up to Southern IL? Any help would be appreciated! Susan Carroll Kelley in IL

    2. Eva, I have the following information, later I will connect through records some of these families of Dallas Co. AL with those of Maury Co. TN. I believe my Nancy Bell who married Hance Hamilton in Chester District SC has a relative in this listing: THE BULLETIN, Chester Co, SC Passenger list for the Earl of Donagal-Duncan Ferguson Master, which came to the port of Charleston Dec 22, 1767. This is one of Rev. William Martin's ships. The original of this list is in the Univ. of NC library. John Bell Hamilton: Izora Chilloness (Gilloness) Hamilton m. William Bradshaw Wilson...I don't know if there is a connection in the Wilson line. I have a copy of one of the "Drapper Papers" which contains information concerning...Lucinda Jane Gill Morrow of Plantersville, Dallas Co. AL...I'll put this up She was Baptized at Fishing Creek and was the daughter of Agness Walker of Chester Co. SC. Would put up her fathers first name...but until I get my file, his last name was Gill. Through one of her children I have a connection to the Wilkins line of Maury Co. According to the DAR, Dr. Samuel Hamilton (father of Hance Hamilton) had a daughter Mary who also married a John A. Wilkins....however I've yet to seperate the Wilkins line. If I'm in error please let me know.. Pat.

    2. Doris, Have you looked at http://www.wdbj.net/~tnbaptist/burnett_jml.htm Sketches of Tennessee's Pioneer Baptist Preachers. Jesse Montreville Burnett. I haven't a clue where he connects, however It says at he age of 13 he was converted in a meeting held by Elders Joseph Manning and Ephraim Moore. Rev. John Bell, brother of Mary Lucinda Bell Roberts was a Baptist preacher and rambled around TN and NC...we've yet to track him down. You are probably familiar with the Bell book written by Getha Gina Bell Bells of USA and Allied Families. She has this entry and it appears to have documentation. This is on the CARTER family of VA If you want the full chapter, will put it through the scanner... Under John Carter (June 8, 1725-after 1793). Died in Orange County, Virginia. Son of Joseph and Catherine Carter. Orange County census of 1782 shows John with 16 whites and 30 servants. John married Susannah ?. John and Susannah were signers of many deeds in Orange and Spotsylvania counties until 1787 at which time she no longer appeared as a signer. John sold in January 1793 the place where I now live in Orange County to Roger and Henry Bell. Children: John Carter Jr.. Sep 21, 1757-June 20, 1808 in Spotsylvania County. 1. Re: [TNMAURY-L] Walker Info
    2. Dear Mary Laura: Thank you for writing. My Bell line comes from Chester Co. SC to Madison Co. AL to Maury Co. TN to Lewis Co. TN to Gibson Co. TN to Pulaski CO. AR to Lonoke Co. AR. My mother was b. in Lonoke Co. AR, as was I. In the Bell Family Bible there are Carters and Neelys listed that I knew nothing about until a few years ago. My grandfather Bell lived in Pine Bluff until he and my grandmother moved in with my parents in Brinkley AR where they lived until both died. The Bible is now in the possession of my cousin in Pine Bluff. [Since my grandfather was b. in Gibson Co. TN, I assume these early dates were from Gibson Co., but may not have been] Neely J. Carter was b. 1- J. A. Carter was b. 12-27-1859 T. J. Carter was b. 2 Mar 1857 There were a lot of Neely and Carter families in both Maury Co. TN and Madison Co. AL at the time my Bell men were there. This is what I can share with you. If you have more on the above mentioned individuals, I would appreciate knowing about it. Thanks, Eva Walker Myer

    1. Re: [TNMAURY-L] Walker Info
    2. Thanks Rick...and Doris Continuing at least the important part of this thesis by Alleen Williams Carter. I believe I left off with the following paragraph: Jim Wilkins, John Neely and John Cooke were nephews of Hamilton and lived in the Hamilton home. Wilkins and Neely were sons of Hamilton's deceased sister, Polly Wilkins; Cooke, the son of Hamilton deceased sister Elizabeth Cooke. My notes: I know several on this list have sorted out the Wilkins connection as well as the Neely, however other than a John Cook listed in the home of John Bell Hamilton...I haven't a clue how he is related. John's sister Elizabeth Hamilton was born March 30, 1803 and d. Apr 22, 1830 Maruy co. TN She is buried in the Raleigh Dodson Cemetery, Maury Co. TN. She married Beverly Dodson Sep 28, 1818. John's sister Mary "Polly" Ann Hamilton m. John A. Wilkins. She was b. Sep 11, 1809 and died Aug 28, 1847. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---------------------------------------------continuing... Dr. D. H. Dungan, husband of Hamilton's sister Lillie, served as Surgeon for he First Tennessee Cavalry The Dungans' daughter, Nannie (Nancy Jane) married O. (Oliver) Perry McGee, wh owned a plantation at Dixie Station, Alabama (my note: Perry Co. AL, now Chilton Co. AL) Hamilton spent much time there in the later years of the war. (my note: Dr. D. H. Dungan was the nephew of John Bell Hamilton, his mother was Lillie Hamilton Dungan. He married Alice Thompson, daughter of Dr. Elijah Thompson and Mary Ann Riley of Thompson's Station, TN. He moved to Little Rock Arkansas after the death of his wife and remarried) Isaac Milner was a Methodist minister and business associate of Hamilton. He and his brother Sam Milner, were engaged in the manufacturing of jeans for the Confederacy until a Union raid in 1863 burned their factory near Florence, Alabama. Milner is mentioned frequently in Hamilton's later letters. Alice Dickerson was Tommie Williams' sweetheart. Billy Williams, sometimes referred to only as "Brother," was Tommie's younger half-brother, and Elizabeth (Lizzie) Williams was his half-sister whom he called "Sis." (Edward Williams had married a second time after Tommie's mother died.) Billy joined Tommie's company in the fall of 1864. During his service Billy suffered the loss of a finger. Several of the Hamilton slaves are mentioned frequently. Their names are listed here in the hope of avoiding some confusion for the reader. John Turkey, John Stack, Dan, Peter, Fred, Marshall, Harriet and Mariah were some of the most trusted slaves. Carey was bought late in 1862. About the last of July, 1861, the Second Battalion marched to Camp Trousdale, Tennessee, near the Kentucky border, on the Louisville-Nashville Railroad, where it was encampted until September. Hamilton described it as a "camp of disease and death." August 29, 1861 My Wife, I reached home (the camp) last night in good health--found all my boys well except Al Carigan who is detailed home on the sick list. I found on my arrival that a petition of the officer who had signed Nichols' application had gone to Governor Harris for the appointment of Dr. Tawler as Surgion. I suppose this move fixes the appointment with certainty on Frierson and Tawler. You may show this to Dr. T. and if he is appointed and it meets your wish, I think you had better transfer John to Dr. S. W. Frierson's care. We have a sharp amount of measles and some fever and want a surgion now. Dungan is doing all his duty and is popular but does not ask or desire the surgeoncy, but will gladly accept the assistancy. He is eminently qualified for this and I now see that such an appointment is indispensable. Respects to Br. and Sister Burr. Bro. Mizell and family, also Dr. Church and family and everybody else. S. H. Jones resigns, taking effect this day; no move yet, but it may give me trouble ahead. You will hear many rumors about Kentucky, but keep cool. Mrs. Dr. Park says she will come up with you to Camp Trousdale if you conclude to come. Don't come until the present storm blows over. I will keep you posted on any secret moves--publick things you will see in the papers. I yet remain on the general Court Martial which takes much of my time. My health is about as usual Respectfully John B. Hamilton Tommie Williams and Jim Wilkins, like so man others, contracted measles at camp and were sent home to recuperate. Their absence was keenly felt by Captain Hamilton, who needed their votes in the forthcoming election. There is a feeling of helplessness in his letter. Bowling Creen Sept. 20, 1861 Dear Thomas, I am glad to learn you and James (Jim Wilkins) are better. I hope it may continue. I have not heard from John. I wish you were well enough to come, but do not risk too much. If my boys were in, even 10 of them, I could be Lt. Col. As it is, it's doubtful. Fiffle outnumbers Kinzer and me both. Polk is for me out and out. J. B. Hamilton Moe later...

Support this movie so we might see others. Being a lover of genealogy and history, and see that it would only be positive I would like to recommend the movie "Gods and Generals". I do realize this is not the environment to post such a message, however when it has to do with history, and peoples ancestry, like mine, I think we should promote it. Now, I realize it may not be the best movie every filmed, however, the movie does try to stay close to the accuracy of history (not so of most Hollywood films.) . It may be a little long, but there are some great scenes. It is wholesome, morally straight. In response to the violent nature of the film. If you are worried about a quizzey stomach not to worry if you saw Glory, Patriot, or Gettysburg this will not be as objectable. The battle of Fredericksburg is a little intense, but nothing in comparison to other movies that have come out. The interesting thing is that the liberal! media is having a field day with this movie, they seem to not get enough blood and gore, bad relationships between man and wife, sexual content, etc... this movie literally upsets them to see something like "Gods and Generals", seeing that it is more historically accurate than most movies produced these days. 3. Pat, That definitely fits. Eva knows more about the earlier Bells than I do. She subscribes to this list too. I'll try to contact her too. I have the children of Valentine Bell and Mary Magruder as Zephaniah Bell (1769), John Bell (abt 1770), William Bell (abt 1773), James Bell (abt 1775), Fielder Bell (abt 1776), Valentine Bell (about 1777), Elizabeth Bell (about 1779), Sarah Bell (abt 1780), Nancy Bell (abt 1782), Mary Magruder Bell (abt 1783), Frances Bell (abt 1785) and Rachel Bell (abt. 1787) As you can see all the birth dates are just guessed at so the Nancy could have definitely been born a little earlier. I'll check with Eva and see if she has more and get back with you. Hopefully she will respond soon though.
