Greetings Maury County List, The Web Site Cemeteries of Maury County has undergone a major expansion since last mentioned on this list. Several Cemeteries have been added. There are now about 2,200 photos and 2,500 writings of inscriptions of various cemeteries and memorials in Maury County Tennessee. A search engine is there allowing one to quickly determine if there is a burial of interest on the site. However it is limited to 1,000 files and may not be comprehensive. Use that at your own risk. Suzanne Davison has joined our team and has done an outstanding job of photographing and listing Wilks-Campground Cemetery. That project is largely done for the main section and is now underway for the integrated section. It is over 450 photos now and when complete will be in excess of 600 memorials. This Cemetery site now covers about 3% of all the marked graves of the county and as much as 7% of all the graves prior to 1940. That is significant considering there is a photo of each tombstone where we could get it. The concentration of completed cemeteries is largely in the southern area of the county. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~maury/cemetery/ To be a serious cemetery researcher you are still going to need Mr. Fred Lee Hawkins book "Cemeteries of Maury County Tennessee" for the added histories and genealogies. There are over 450 Cemeteries covered by the book. Wayne Austin
Dear Samuel, I, too, would like to know about the wagon trains you site. Elizabeth "Betsy" Brown, born 1786, and Kinchen Segraves, born 1776, married in Wake County, North Carolina, 11 Sep 1802. Kinchen Segraves died intestate 18 October 1856 in Lawrence County, Tennessee. One hundred years later, on 10 April 1877, the Kinchen Segraves' granddaughter Sarah Josephine Morrow Lindsey, a daughter of their daughter Anna Segraves Morrow, gave birth to a son near Columbia, Maury County, TN, "on the Brown place, near Snow Creek, 3 miles SE of Columbia, Maury County, TN." I believe Betsy Brown Segraves was related to the Brown of "Brown place" but have no way knowing. I'm wondering if your information might connect the Browns of "Brown place" in Maury County and the Kinchen Segraves family in Lawrence County? Surnames: Witherspoon, Wilson Classification: Lookup Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/0hB.2ACI/328 Message Board Post: I need a look-up in the Maury County area of Tennessee for any other documentation that Samuel Garrison Witherspoon was there between 1806-1829. He was born in the Williamsburg colony of SC to John and Rebecca Irwin McBride WItherspoon in 1792, and he married Mary--- from Tennessee. I found his name on the Zion Presbyterian Church roster in Tennessee Cousins, as an early member of that congregation. I found a history of several who migrated there in two separate wagon trains: the first in March of 1805 and the other, a year later. I believe my Samuel was is the 2nd train. This total group would have settled in or near the area which had originally been a portion of General Nathanial Greene's land grant from the Revolutionary War. I have documentation on the rest of his life and a guestimate of his ancestry from my grandfather's genealogy research, but so far, have been unable to prove that the Samuel in Maury County who was a member of that church and who was a Road Supervisor, was,in fact, MY Samuel and not somebody else's. Thanks.
Here is a bit of information that I found this morning in some notes given to me by Sid Baker, a distant relative through marriage of his mother to a Grant, whose name appeared in almost every book in the Clayton Genealogy Library in Houston that I was searching for Grant history. I am searching for information about Thomas GRANT and Sarah DAVIS nee GLOVER GRANT. "After the death of Thomas Grant, in the latter part of 1838 in Marshall County, TN, the remaining members of the family decided to remove to areas where their brother and sisters were living. The widow Sarah Grant (who was married to Thomas Grant); James Davis Grant and family; Early Reasonover (who married Lavinia, daughter of Thomas and Sarah Grant) and family; Richard G. Grant and Adaline with Malinda Elizabeth who had been born in Maury County, TN. They arrived in Pontotoc County Mississippi, before the U. S. 1840 Census was taken, as they were in it. It was in Pontotoc County that Martha P. Grant was born in 1842, and John Thomas Grant was born in February 2, 1844. A son Davis died as a small boy. R. G. Grant operated a store there, and I have in my possession a copy of the "Mobile Journal of Commerce Letter -- Sheet Price -- Current" dated Wednesday, October 29, 1845. Brother John and his family and sister Mary and David R. Looney were already living in Ponto! toc County, Mississippi. Staying in Mississippi until 1847, they moved on to Clarksville, Red River County, Texas where sister Elizabeth and Posey P. Weaver were living, after several months they journeyed on to Rusk County where sister Nancy and William Whitehead had settled. The Reasonovers stayed here for several years, then moving to Grayson County, near Sherman, Texas. James Davis Grant bought land in Robertson County, Texas, near Franklin, his land was known as "Grant Prairie". He remained there the rest of his life, and those of his family who died there are buried in the Owensville Cemetery. The widow Sarah Grant who died January 7. 1860 is also buried there." It does not show that she lived in Robertson County at time of death, however. We do know that James Davis and family moved to Robertson County Texas in 1852. Other information from Sid Baker indicated, "Sarah Grant had a sister named Christina who married a man named James Davis. The 1850 Federal Census records for Marshall County, Tennessee, reflects that Christina was born in North Carolina. However, I have been unable to locate any NC data such as maiden name. Grandma always said that her grandma Grant was born in Northern Ireland. In the 1850 Federal Census for Rusk County Texas and 1880 Federal Census for Robertson County Texas for James David Grant said both parents were born in Tennessee." Further, from Sid's notes, "John Grant, first son of Thomas and Sarah Grant, married Martha Shannon and they were living in Pontotoc County, Mississippi in 1850 with their tow children David and Jackson. Richard G. Grant married Adeline Fowler ca 1829 in Bedford County, Tennessee and died in Coryell County, Texas in 1858 with wife and three children surviving. Thomas Grant's oldest daughter Mary, married David Looney and died in Pontotoc County Mississippi in 1857...." One final relevant note from Sid: "Thomas and Sarah Grant and James and Christina Grant were in Maury County, Tennessee many years prior to 1816. Thomas, James and Christina died in Marshall County Tennessee in 1837 (other information indicates 1838, not 1837), 1840 and 1854 respectively. Sarah and Christina were sisters." Any help would be appreciated. Allen <'\\\><
HELP!!! Anyone out there have a connection with my Maury County, TN, John BUTLER? Do not know who he married, but think her name was Elizabeth. His will, written in 1864, leaves his estate divided between daughters, Julia Ann (Butler) ASHTON "wife of James Hilton ASHTON", Nancy Blair BUTLER, and Lizzie Hill BUTLER, and son Samuel BUTLER. John BUTLER's death is listed as December 1871. He is also associated closely somehow with DAIMWOOD's of Maury county, TN. Also am searching for the connection of the BUTLER and DAIMWOOD family connection with my HAYS/HAYES family line. Would greatly appreciate any help. Marsha

That's sad about the Polk Estate having to be sold. Because President James K. Polk was related to the wife of one of my Brevard Ancestors Dr. Ephriam Brevard who was son of my 6th Great-Grand Uncle John Brevard Jr. brother to my 6th Great Grandpa Robert Brevard. Thanks for letting me know about it. Sad that it has to be sold again instead of saved. Hope someone comes along and saves it. ===== Patti http://www.geocities.com/americanterrortwin/index.html __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? SBC Yahoo! For Marilyn Helm - FIELDING NELM (1889-1884) was married in Franklin, Williamson County, Tn. in 1813 to NANCY HOLLAND, daughter of KEMP AND JUDITH (SAUNDERSON) HOLLAND. JUDITH was the daughter of my gggg grandparents, WILLIAM AND JEMIMA SAUNDERSON of Virginia and Maury County. I don't have much information about this family, but do have the Family Group Sheet of JEROME BONAPARTE HELM who, in 1841 married JEMIMA ANN TURNEY, daughter of HENRY TURNEY and MARTHA (PATSY) SAUNDERSON, of Maury County. Will be happy to share.

Good morning to all, I am searching for information on the ASHTON and HILTON families of the county of Lancashire in England. My g-g-grandfather was James Hilton ASHTON. He was born 5-24-1817 in county of Lancashire in the parish of Oldham and left Liverpool on May 26, 1840 and arrived in America on July 4, 1840. His parents were Thomas ASHTON and Ann HILTON. He came to Mt. Pleasant in 1841 in Maury County in Tennessee. He was married to Julia Ann BUTLER, 9-5-1848. Julia's father was John BUTLER. James and Julia had children, John Butler, Mary Lou, James H, Samuel F., and Robert Lee (my great-grandfather), all of whom are buried in Maury County, Rose Hill Cemetery. Two other children that died at a young age, Marshall and Ann E., are buried in the Daimwood Cemetery in Maury County. Thanks in advance for any information anyone might be able to provide me on either the ASHTON, BUTLER, or HILTON families. Also am interested in hearing from anyone who might have a HAYS connection within their BUTLER families from TN (ca. early 1800's) Marsha
Greetings Jan & list, There were actually two Coffey(e) families in the early Maury County History. I myself do not trace to the Culleoka Set though I could probably connect with that family earlier on in North Carolina or Virginia. Supposedly the Campbell Station/Culleoka set (Hugh W. Coffey and family) came from South Carolina to settle in Maury County in the early 1800s. (Census Analysis) My branch came from North Carolina via Kentucky and the first known progenitor was Chesley Coffee, Jr. who last lived and died over in Southport which is near Mt Pleasant in the southwestern area of the county. I have presented many of the memorials of both families on the site "Cemeteries of Maury County" in various cemeteries that is Shane, Evergreen Cemetery (in Progress), Reece's Chapel/(in Progress), Chesley Coffee Grave, Gilbreath-Morrow-Coffee Cemetery and some others. Maury County Cemeteries I think the connections of these two Coffey(e) branches is beyond my aptitude for research at the moment. Until more information (or time allows) comes to light the connection will remain a mystery buried in the genealogies of North Carolina and Virginia. Seems to me they held true to spelling the name differently. Coffey - from the Culleoka area. Whereas; Coffee - from the Mt Pleasant area of Maury County. It is obvious both families branched widely around the 1840s and wound up all over the county and country but then may have co-mingled with other Coffey(e) branches that never came to Maury County. Sorry I could not be more helpful on the connection of these Coffe(y)s. Have a great day. Wayne Austin
