Hello, I live in the Zion community of Maury County, TN. in a home built circa 1840. I'm trying to reseach the history of this homeplace. Our home is shown as the D.C. Brown home on an 1878 map of Maury Co. Do you have any knowledge of this family? Thanks! Jim Moore

W. Puckett of Miss. in 1838 - he lived a short time; married second James Caughron on 5 Dec. 1850; Other sisters, Amanda Irwin, Mariah Kinzer; Cumberland Presbyterian for 40 years; buried in Cook-Caughron Cemetery in sight of her old home and buried between her two husbands. Perhaps David & Samuel were brothers. I am researching the Younger family and found this in "THEY PASSED AWAY" Vol II Maury Co., TN Death Records while in Maury Co. earlier this year. Carolyne

I have established an Oliver DNA Project which seeks to identify and connect as many pre-1800 Oliver lines as possible, and to determine, whenever possible, their immigrant ancestors and their origins. (I am personally interested in the Oliver families of southern MD and northern VA 1786 and before who moved to western KY and Maury Co., TN later.) I would urge you to participate in this project if you can. For more information please see: <http://www.familytreedna.com>, <http://www.ftdna.com/surname_det.asp?group=Oliver>, and <http://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.asp?code=P27206>. The lab work for this study will be done by FamilyTreeDNA in Houston, TX. They use the DNA on the Y-chromosome for these genealogical studies because it mutates at a fairly slow and predictable rate. Being on the Y-chromosome, Y-DNA is passed down from father to son, intact, for generation after generation but is not transmitted through female descendents. All male descendants of a distant ancestor will have an identical 11 or 12 out of 12 Y-DNA markers. This test is only for Oliver males with an uninterrupted line of descent from some earlier Oliver male. A more precise but somewhat more expensive 25 marker Y-DNA test is available. Both the 12 marker and the 25 marker tests are significantly discounted for participants in the Oliver DNA Project. (I bought the 25 marker test kit for my Oliver uncle.) Group prices are found at: <http://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.asp?code=U77720> The DNA sample is taken with a little toothbrush-like thing that is painlessly rubbed on the inside of your cheek for a minute. The little scrubber is then placed in a bottle with a little liquid. It and another sample taken the same way at least 8 hours later are mailed to the lab in Houston. Results come in about 6 weeks. All necessary components are included in the DNA kit. FamilyTreeDNA has a web site that explains in greater detail how the tests work, what the results mean, etc. Go to their site <http://www.familytreedna.com> and look up some of their surname studies. Please contact me if you have questions. DISCLAIMER: I have absolutely no financial or other interest in FamilyTreeDNA. -- Pat Oliver [email protected]
There is a similar study being conducted by Family Tree DNA http://www.ftdna.com/ for Liles/Lyles family lines including the Liles line which came from South Carolina to Maury County in the early 1800's. They have been testing members of various lines for only a few months and so far the results have been very helpful in connecting the various family lines. The staff at Family Tree DNA in Houston has been very knowledgeable and helpful with our project. They are open from Monday through Thursday. I think they open at 8:00 or 9:00 each morning. On Monday and Thursday they close at 8:00 p.m. and on Tues. and Wed. they close at 5:00 p.m. They have a wonderful staff there of both volunteers and regular help. Barbara Garrett (archivist) and Bob Duncan (historian and director) are very helpful and knowledgeable as well as all the others. Bob has just gotten out of the hospital from a heart attack. I have not been able to go up for awhile but understand he is out of the hospital and doing much better. Does anyone on this list know anything about the family of Thomas & Elen Seagraves Jackson who were in Maury County on the 1870 census? Thomas was probably already deceased but Elen and her children had moved from Sumner County to Maury because her Seagraves sister, Amanda Lucrecia Seagravaes Wright, was in that area. A brother, Maxwell L. Seagraves was in Maury County also and died there in 1907. Joan Pruett
