Does anyone have a valid e-mail address for the Maury County Archives in Columbia, TN? I've found and tried two different e-mail addresses and both bounced back. Thanks. Sylvia
This is cute! Shirley. Did you write it? If not, do you know who did? I would like to share it with another website if it is alright. Thanks! I am not sure there is anyone who is active that way Sylvia. They have the monumental task of maintaining a large archive with a couple of persons and little time for much other than serving the visiting public in a prescribed manner. They do a great job and I for one am thankful for all they do. You might try to access some of the volunteers or there may also be professional genealogist around to help. TNGENWEB may carry a list of those. Wayne Austin
FAMILY NAMES For those who've banged against brick-walls Until brain cells were bruised Here's another little problem That might have you confused. When you speak of family names, As genealogists often do, Please omit the apostrophe When you mean more than two. (Actually more than one, but it doesn't rhyme that way) So, to be correct, the Smiths or Wrights, Not Smith's or Wright's, is what you'd say. Don't use the apostrophe in names Except to show possession, As in: The Hindenberger's dog Shows tendencies towards aggression. Abe Miller begat Millers, Not Miller's, for years And the long line of Brighams, Not Brigham's, were early pioneers. Don't call your family book "The Johnson's" or "The Clark's" Unless you add what it is they own- Their cabin, their bed, their knives or forks. "The Johnson's Cabin" makes good sense; The Johnsons would be proud For they scraped together what they had In a struggle from earth to the shroud. Now, for the exception to the rule (I see you all have frowned) Add "es" to the names Ending in "s" or in an "s" sound. The Joneses and the Davises Look quite odd, I'm sure you will agree, But the standard rules of English Were not made up by me. When thinking of the Smiths, Don't double-pluralize. John Smith's children were not Smithses, And neither were his wives. As for those hated brick-walls, (Should we be by fortune seized) How would we spend our extra time If those were solved with ease? I would suggest contacting the Maury County Archives, Columbia, TN for a photocopy of this marriage record. That might help prove or rule out that this is the correct marriage record. Good morning Sylvia, I am convinced that Nancy is the great great grandmother for both of us as I alluded to in the reply on the mailing list. I think it is clear that "Joice" is really Ivie. I've tried to decode the writing in early census records and can easily believe that misinterpretation. I've done a fair amount of research beyond that and have a couple of good candidates for her parents. What info do you have that may help us find them so we can exchange info? Sylvia, You may have solved one of my brick walls for me! My great-great grandmother was Nancy Walker according to my great grandmother's (Martha P. Jennings) death certificate. Martha was born in 1840. Her father (Nancy's mother) was Thomas D. Jennings. Thomas was born in 1816 based on his gravestone and married Nancy on Nov 29, 1838 in Marshall County, TN. Thomas is listed as Ginnings on the record. I just looked and it is located online at the Marshall County web site (http://www.tngenweb.org/marshall/marriage/book1.html "Thomas D. Ginnings m. Nancy Walker, Nov. 28,1838, Executed Nov. 29,1838, By Joseph McCord Elder". I assumeNancy was born 1820-1825 based on the 1840 census when she was counted with Thomas (which did not yet have Martha). Beyond that, I have suppositions only. Thomas apparently divorced (hopefully) and remarried Phoebe C. Reid on March 29, 1843 in Marshall County. They had at least 7 children together and were in Greene Co., MO by 1857 according to an old history I saw. What do you think?! Wilkerson Barnes was a batchelor without any children, but he was very influential with the children of his relatives. The tie-in to the Pillow family was through the Thomas family. Two of Jesse Thomas' daughters married Pillows. Jesse's son Job Thomas married Wilkerson Barnes sister in VA in 1805 before moving to Tennessee to work with his brother-in-law. These two are buried in Zion Cemetery. Wilkerson Barnes had a large plot of land on the Mt. Pleasant Pike which he left to JWB Thomas (Job's son). It would not surprise me if Wilkerson used family members in additon to his slaves to work his land as was custom in that day..

I live in Lewisburg. You can come to Lewisburg and then take the Mooresville Highway (Tennessee 373) west to Mooresville and then to Culleoka. However, the easiest way would be to drive to Columbia and then cross West 7th Street there at President Polk's home and take Carmack Blvd. out to the Highway 50 junction, and turn left on Highway 50 (towards Lewisburg) until you get to the 373 turn-off. It's only 4 or 5 miles. There will be a sign directing the driver to the right and Culleoka. Best, Bill Most sincerely, William R. (Bill) Massey of Lewisburg/Marshall County, Tennessee
I think the best way to get to Culleoka is to take TN-50 (Lewisburg Pike) east from US-31 to TN-373 because US-31 is several miles from the town and you have to take several different roads to get there from 31. TN-373 goes right through the town. It's 11.6 miles from the courthouse. This is according to my map thing from Microsoft, which is not always right, so you might want to look at mapquest.com or something to verify it. Most people stay at the Richland Inn, right at the intersection of TN-50 and US-31 south of Columbia. There are a lot of other motels too, but this one is on your side of town. Legends is the restaurant next to the Richland. I recommend it. There are plenty of other restaurants on TN-50 west of US-31. I hope you get to hear somebody who speaks Mauryese, but you might not. The cemeteries can be found on http://www.topozone.com/ or it would be easier to just look on Wayne's site where he has maps for most of them, including Pleasant Mount. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~maury/cemetery/ The map shows it is close to Hy 50. To get there you go a little past 373 to Fountain Heights Rd, go left. Old things: President Polk's home is on W 7th not far from the courthouse. The courthouse is old. The MCHS has descriptions for some others on its site. http://historicmaury.org/ Do some research before you go and don't get yourself lost. Enjoy your trip. If you have any old group school pictures I collect them on my site, from anywhere in the US. Gary Hood Marissa, IL http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~genieresources/
Hi, Congratulations on that trip. I sort of envy you. I was born there in the very area you intend to visit, and so was my mother. My grandfather helped to build the Presbyterian church on the corner close to Cully. Almost all my genealogy is centered in that neighborhood. Route 31 used to be a straight drive from Columba to Culleoka passing through Glendale. Since I have lived there, they have probably moved things around. Have a great time.
