richard carleton, sr. andjohn carleston were brothers from algleshire, scotland they came to n.c. fom chester, co. pennslyvania around 1739. richard carleton sr. born ca. 1720 in chester, penn. or argleshire, scotland. richard and his wife mary were marr. in penn. before moving to craven co. n.n. he is listed in the 1739 n.c. colonial record, chowan co. and recived a land grant of 180 acres in craven, co province of n.c., 4-6-1740. richard carleton was a foot soldier commanded by capt. thomas graves in craven, co. n.c. 1-1751. his will was peesented 6-5-1790 in craven co. n.c. naming issues: richard, thomas, blake, mary ann, elizabeth, sarah, rachel, lydia,samuel, and frankey. anoter son, john whose name was omitted in recording te wills, but whose name was included and list first in the original will, which was found in the archives library at raleight, n.c. richard carleton, jr. is the son of richard carleton sr. and wife mary. adeed to richard jr. from richard sr. was recored to richard jr. from richard sr., was rcorded 6-1-1768 in craven c., of the province of n.c., foa a tract of land on the lower sid of mosley creek. there is a will recored in craven co., n.c. 15-sept.-1842 by richard carleton whose wife was sally (sarah) carleton listing his son benjamin g. carlton as executor of his will. three daughter are listed. elizabeth prescort, polly collins, and sally white also a son, hardy m. carlton. if this is the same richard carlton, he would have to be very old. thomad carleton sr. son of richard carleton, sr. and mary, was born in chester co. penn. 10-5-1747. he marr. in 1769 to martha thomas, born 1751, in chester co. penn. martha thomas carleton die after 1810 in duplin co. n.c. thomas carleton sr. will was recored in parish of st. gabriel duplin co. n.c. 7-sept. -1795 listing his heirs as four daughter, rachel, anna, elizabeth , lydia. his son john carlton and 2 younger sons, stephen and thomas. martha, his wife and john his son were named ex. and executor of his will. in peter carlton"s will 13-5-1840 he listed thomas carleton as his father_in_ law, whose wife was martha, and leaves land to be equally divided between john carlton, thomas carlton, rachel rogers, anna gilstrap, and lydia mathis. this indicates that richard might have been dead at that time. it also gives the sir names of rachel, anna, and lydia"s husbands. i have more but i need to go now. i well post some friday. i hope this well help all.
