Surnames: Claxton, Clarkson, Clarkston Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/zhB.2ACI/1136 Message Board Post: We are pleased to announce the Clarkson, Claxton and Clarkston DNA surname project. Please consider participating if you are descended from any of these lines. The census indicates that there were Claxtons in this county in the 1880 census. We have also received information that some Clarks and perhaps Clayton’s are also related. Our goals initially identified for this project are as follows: 1. To determine if the Claxton, Clarkson, Clarkston, Clark or Clayton lines are connected. 2. To connect the various lines with their ancestors and to differentiate between the lines. 3. To determine if Jeremiah Claxton is related to James Claxton progenitor of the Wright Co., Missouri Claxtons and one line of Tennessee Claxtons. 4. To determine if Thomas Clarkson of Lee Co Virginia and James Clarkson/Claxton of Claiborne Co. Tennessee were in fact brothers, and if so, if George Middleton Clarkson, executed in the State of Franklin in about 1785 was their father (if possible). 5. To determine if the Claxton families of Oklahoma, Missouri, Tennessee, and Georgia are related. 6. To determine if the Tennessee, Virginia and Pennsylvania lines re related. 7. To identify our immigrant ancestor(s) if possible. 8. To determine our Clarkson/Claxton/Clarkston native homeland. 9. To break down those brick walls. If you descend from any of these lines, please, please consider participating. You can be the representative descendent from your line. We need participants and you will hopefully connect with other lines since the advent of surnames. You will also find out about your own deep ancestry, before surnames were used, and where your ancestors originated. In order to participate in the testing, a linear male descendent is required. Many females who cannot themselves participate successfully find a male relative bearing the last name being tested and have their “cousin” represent their line. A linear male is required because the portion of the DNA being tested is on the Y chromosome and only males have the Y chromosome. It is not intermixed with the mother’s chromosomes, since females doesn’t have one, so therefore it is passed from father to son intact, not intermixed with the mother’s DNA. Because of that, and the fact that mutations occur very slowly, we can use it to determine if various descendents come from a common ancestor. The testing is painless, a simple cheek swab. You can obtain further information about the DNA testing process by viewing the web site of the company who will be providing the testing at www.familytreedna.com. You can sign up for the testing by typing Claxton, Clarkson or Clarkston in the search box at the top right of their web page. On the page that is returned, click on the name and an ordering page will be displayed. Please order at least the 25 marker test, as the 12 marker test often does not provide enough different markers to determine lineage and the participants wind up upgrading to the 25 marker test anyway. After your test results are returned, Mary Ann Claxton and Roberta Estes, your project administrators, will assist you in understanding your results, compare your results to others who have tested, establishing family groupings, and will be glad to answer questions you may have. We will in the future create web space to provide information about the DNA project and results. If you have questions, please feel free to contact us at: Mary Ann Claxton - claxtonm@k12tn.net Roberta Estes - restes@comcast.net

Alvin may also be listed as Allie or Allen. I know Cleo's maiden name as Johnson only by family history and her obit. She was supposedly a full-blooded Cherokee indian who was adopted by a JOhnson family. I have no other knowledge of her ancestry.
I am searching for info on the family of Martha Vaughn. She was in Rutherford census in 1880 - 1900 but I know they were very close to the county line and lived in Marshall County also. Have no other info on her other than she married James W Morgan around 1873
List Members: A few days ago I put a post on this list about Peter LUNA. At our Chestnut Ridge Cousins Reunion we had Cherel Henderson for a speaker. Cherel is with the East Tennessee Historical Society and she was the author of the book "First Families of Tennessee". In order to qualify for this distinction the ancestor had to reside in the state by the year 1796. Well, Peter Luna is listed as a member of the first families. The notation in the book reads as follows: PETER LUNA (LOONEY) BORN: 1759-60, Augusta Co., VA; DIED 1851 Marshall Co., TN; MARRIED Mary Pittman (and/or Long); County Settled Long Island, 1776; PROOF: Revolutionary War Pension. Then there is a list of the descendants that applied for the First Family recognition. Bobby Prosser prossergenealogy@comcast.net http://www.chestnutridgecousins.org

Well after two days of complete insanity and being assured at any given second I was going to lose my mind, I have finally launched the first of about a week or so worth of new pages ahead of us! If you go to tngenweb.org/marshall you will find our main page, and then from there, onto the Cemetery Records and you will see that updated, as well as two new photo pages, Bethbirei, and Marsh-Davis, with thanks to our wonderful contributors for their pictures....I know many of you have sent other information, and I will be working on the new pages in the following week. I ran into some major problems when I uploaded the current new ones and that is why I almost lost my mind! Remember, if you would like to submit anything, let me know...I take just about anything really, the more we know about this county our ancestors came to and from, the better off we will understand their lives. Check in daily......I hope to post a new page everyday until I am caught up! Happy 4th all! Paulette

I am doing some look ups for him so IF you have information please email both of us so that I can keep up! Thanks! GEORGE EDWARD "NED" BARNES BORN IN 1819 MARRIED SUSAN COLLINS IN MARSHALL CO., TN AND HAD A DAUGHTER LEONA BARNES WHO MARRIED A HAISLIP IN MARSHALL CO., TN. MARY ANN BARNES (sister to George above) married John Feild Gordon and then Addison Garrett Back again with a correction. Family Search has the 1880 Census available for all trh STATES and in it for Marshall Co., TN is two George Barnes one of which is married to Susan Collins and evidently the other one is mine which is George Barnes age 61 born in 1819 with a wife Melissa Barnes age 47 born in 1833 with these children: Emily age 17 Ida age 14 Georgie 9 Leona 5 Margaret Milton daughter age 22 Lizzie Milton age 6 granddaughter Luther Milton age 4 grandson I had in my notes that Leona Barnes daughter of Ned Barnes had married a Haislip in Marshall Co., TN. So this has to be my Barnes relatives. We also have dates for all of them and Leona Barnes was born in 1875 and probably got married the haislip in the 1890's The above information is just snips from emails, so hope it helps some on where he is going with this..... If you are in Marshall co, I hope you are not flooded..... I recieved this email a few minutes ago from someone looking for help with the history of a farm that they are buying. Please read, and lets see if we can help her out! We're in the process of purchasing what looks to be an old farm on Chunn Rd, Chapel Hill, TN. for our retirement. The house was purposely burnt down a couple years due to poor repair, but there is still the barn, chicken coop, and a couple other out buildings. We plan on building a log home close to the original site. My question is - is there a way of tracing back to the original owners? Dates etc.? Thought it might even be nice if I found out the ladies name to have a little herb or flower garden and call it for example "Ellie's Garden" or something like that. Maybe years ago Chunn Rd wasn't part of Chapel Hill, I know some of the smaller communities came together to make others. Thanks for any help, Pat Hancock Home email - ahancock@tampabay.rr.com I did suggest the courthouse, Isnt land sale public information where she could write to or go to the courthouse to get the information? Also, wondering if any of our Marshall Co. longtime residents may have a clue as to the history of this place. Or any historian's....... Thanks to everyone.......if we can find out the history of this house, I think a nice new 'project' for our web site would be historic place/home/family stories... Paulette
For any of you dedicated to find part of your Grant line and have run into a total roadblock, you may want to consider the latest genealogy tool, DNA projects, in hopes of making connections far removed from where your trail seems to end. Currently seven Grants have submitted DNA samples for testing and a total of ten are signed up for the project. The more we have in the study, the greater the chances of finding that needle in the haystack. You can see the most current results of the project at the site below: http://www.familytreedna.com/public/GRANT/ Jon Grant, the Administrator of the project can fill you in with more details if you like. His email address is located on the site. Allen Grant <'\\\>< http://home.houston.rr.com/agrant/genealogy/clangran.htm

I regret that I did not get one. I have borrowed one from my sister - in -law on a couple of occasions. I am not a descendant of Peter Luna, but I have several links to his descendants. Peter Luna was a colorful character. I do not know if the people on the list are familiar with a web site that has a lot of material on Peter Luna. The name of the web site is EARLY LOONEYS IN AMERICA, by Leroy W. Tilton, Part 6, PETER LOONEY BRANCH. It may be accessed at: http://home.flash.net/~johnsonl/p6_1_5.htm. My interest in Peter Luna is via Sophia HOGAN. My theory is that Sophia HOGAN was the second of three wives of George Dillard PETTY. I believe that George Dillard PETTY was first married to Bethany BAGLEY and she was dead by 1829 with five small children to be cared for. I believe shortly after Bethany BAGLEY died that George Dillard PETTY married Sophia HOGAN. Sophia HOGAN is buried in the old Peter Luna Cemetery. From the Marsh Cemetery Book of Marshall County her stone reads: Sophia S., wife of G. D. Petty & dau of A. & J. Hogan Born Oct. 1808 Died July 25, 1831 Age 25 yrs, 8 mos, 26 days I believe that after Bethany died in 1829 he married Sophia and she died shortly thereafter in 1831. She possibly was pregnant and died in childbirth. In 1833 he is married again to third wife Ruth?? and has a child by that time.
