    1. Family Cemeteries
    2. Louis A. Shone III, MD
    3. Joyce, I think you are absolutely correct. There are many small family cemeteries in our country that are becoming "extinct" each year, way too many. As time goes by, many cemeteries just disappear. With their disappearance goes part of our history and part of our heritage. I do not want that to happen to the McAdams Cemetery in Marshall County. In our case, I can not believe a McAdams descendant could be so evil that she would deliberately destroy the cemetery of her ancestors. She did her best to wipe out an integral part of the McAdams heritage in Marshall County. She nearly succeeded. If I had not become interested in my McAdams heritage in Tennessee, she would have succeeded. That's horrible. Now I am trying to undo what she did. I just hope I live long enough to see the job completed. Thanks for your comments. Louis Shone [email protected] Arlington, Texas

    1. [TNMARSHA] McAdams Cemetery
    2. Louis A. Shone III, MD
    3. JPR, Always appreciate comments. When I made my first trip to Tennessee last year, I went to the executive director of Lincoln County. He let me read all the laws of the State of Tennessee regarding cemeteries. He even allowed me to use his copier to copy all the pages from the law book. I still have them. Unfortunately, there is no law in Tennessee that pertains to cemeteries like the McAdams Cemetery. I have written to the governor's office. I have corresponded with the Executive Director of the Funeral Board and Burial Services of the Department of Commerce and Insurance for the State of Tennessee. This department is responsible for seeing that the state laws concerning cemeteries are upheld. In the case of the McAdams Cemetery near Belfast, there is no law in Tennessee that will allow anyone to go onto private property to even view the cemetery. There are two main reasons: 1. The McAdams Cemetery is not a "legally recognized" cemetery. By this I mean that it was never declared or deeded as a cemetery in a deed or in a will. 2. There is no visible cemetery. It has been bull dozed. There are no tombstones to be seen. There is no fence around it. There is no sign anywhere saying there is a cemetery there. What the above amounts to is that the McAdams Cemetery which is on private property and has never been legally documented, is not protected by any Tennessee laws. Therefore, it is "owned" by the owner of the land and he can do with it as he pleases. Remember, around 1955, the then owner of the land had the entire cemetery bull dozed and even that was not against the law. The laws of Tennessee do not protect the small, family cemeteries unless they have been legally documented. The small McAdams Cemetery in Lincoln County near Po Grab is a legal cemetery because John McAdams (a son of Joseph McAdams) deeded the land for the cemetery. I have written the owner of the land twice and he has not responded. He lives in Massachusetts. I hope that maybe he will sell us the one acre the cemetery is on but I do not count on that happening. No matter, as of right now the McAdams Cemetery is a hay field and unfortunately may be such for a long, long time. Louis Shone [email protected]

    3. Dear All, I still think it's better to check with the property owners first. In Tennessee at least, no one gives a "darn" about a law if he looks out his kitchen window and sees someone tromping all over his/her property. Better to be safe than sorry. Buckshot stings! 2. Re: McAdams Cemetery I was told last spring when I went to visit family plot in Lincoln County that you really don't need permission to go to your family plot--even though it is on someone else's property. I have not checked this out and think it is the safest policy to ask for permission, but I believe there is either a state or national law that you have the right to go onto land to a family plot. This might need to be checked out and brought to the attention of person who is uncooperative about old family cemetery.

    2. Re: McAdams Cemetery Six of my ancestors are buried in a family cemetery on what was the original home place in Lincoln County, TN. I went there last spring to take pictures, and called the owner of land to get permission and also let them know we wanted to go to plot. I was told by the owner of the old place that you did not need permission to go onto land to go to family cemetery. There is a law about this. Don't know if it is state or national law. However, if there is a property owner who is uncooperative, then they might need to be reminded of this law, as certainly, no one wants to be in danger over this situation. You might check this out at courthouse in county before you take my word. JPR

    3. The McAdams Cemetery near Belfast in Marshall County, Tennessee is 2.7 miles south of Belfast on Fishing Ford Road. To get to it, turn off Hwy. 431 in Belfast onto Fishing Ford Road. Go south for 2.7 miles. Turn right onto Conrad Road and go about 0.2 miles. On your right is the home of Ed and Laura Bowles. On your left will be a 12 foot gap in the fence. Walk straight south through the fence for about 30 to 35 yards. The cemetery will be directly to your left. You will be able to determine where it is located by the irregular terrain (sunken graves) and some stones protruding up through the ground. Before you travel onto this private property, please get permission to do so from Ed or Laura ([email protected]). The destroyed McAdams Cemetery was recently rediscovered due to the efforts of a McAdams descendant, Fletcher Sanders of Little Rock, Arkansas. The McAdams Cemetery in Po Grab (east of Petersburg) is on Bledsoe Road just 0.2 miles south of Hannah Gap Baptist Church. It is very difficult to see from the road. Unfortunately, the fenced in area does not contain all the graves as the unmarked graves of several slaves are beyond the fence. Joseph and Margaret McAdams are buried in the McAdams Cemetery near Belfast. One of their sons, John W. McAdams, donated the land for the McAdams Cemetery in Po Grab. He and his family are buried there. I am traveling to Belfast on March 12 to take some McAdams descendants from Texas to see the McAdams Cemeteries and the old McAdams home place (only a chimney is left). If anyone would like a tour of the McAdams Cemeteries and the McAdams homestead, please let me know. I would like to get the McAdams Cemetery near Belfast declared a Historical area so that it can be restored and so that McAdams descendants will have access to it. Around 1955, Maggie Blanch Campbell paid Arnold Taylor to bull dozed the entire cemetery. The wicked witch wanted the land cleared. Right now the historical McAdams Cemetery serves as a hay field. 3. Hi!, As I explained to Frances, I don't believe I am related to the Gillums, but I am the GILLIAMS. My ggrandfather, James L.H. Gilliam's folks settled in Lincoln Co., but most of them settled in Marion County. They came from Virginia by way of Hawkins County up in East Tennessee. Consequently, most of my Gilliams were Union soldiers. I'm sorry, but I haven't seen any linkage yet between our Gilliams and your Gillums, although Perry Gilliam was an old friend of mine. We worked together a long time at WJJM in Lewisburg. I hope I've helped. Sincerely, Bill Massey

    3. Contact your Representatives of Congress and express your views. I did and received the letter below. I also checked out some of the names on the bogus email address. That Member of Congress wasn't listed as an Elected official in Congress or the Senate. Someone is pulling everyone's chain. http://www.house.gov/ http://www.senate.gov This is the reply to a email to Representative of Congress, Robert Ehrlich, Jr. The letter is dated 24 Feb 2000. He is on the following committees: Commerce; Subcommittee on Telecommunications, Trade and Consumer Protection; Subcommittee on Energy and Power; Subcommittee on Finance and Hazardous Materials. Dear Mr. Wiles, Thank you for contacting me regarding proposals to impose per-minute charges on Internet calls. I benefit by knowing your views on this important issue. As new advances in cable, telecommunications, and computer industries reach American homes, schools, and businesses, the general public is gaining access to a variety of new services. In an effort to encourage these services, my colleagues and I passed the historic Telecommunications act of 1999 (P.L. 104-104) to open local and long distance markets to competition and deregulate the Internet. Industry and regulatory obstacles, however, have slowed these goals. At the federal agency charged with implementing the Telecommunications Act, the Federal Communications Commission (FTC) must continue to supply the appropriate oversight and guidance over the emerging telecommunication technologies. The Congressional intent is to remove regulator barriers to foster competition resulting in quality service at lower costs. Currently, the FTC has no intentions of imposing a per-minute charge on Internet users. This alleged concern is being spread over the Internet without factual basis. In my view, the policy goal of the Telecommunications Act is to encourage the further use of the Internet and to ensure that it reaches Americans of all ages. Placing per-minute rate on Internet transmissions would run contrary to this goal and disproportionately affect low-to-moderate income families. Accordingly, I will oppose any efforts by congress or the FTC to impose per-minute charges on Internet use. Once again, thank you for sharing your views with me. Please contact me in the future if I may be of additional assistance. Very Truly yours, Robert L. Ehrlich, Jr. Member of Congress I also sent this email back to Representative Ehrlich. Pass this on. I have the letter on file. Gary Wiles
