    2. >From an article in the Dunlap TN Tribune August 26, 1982 Most information states the school opened in 1861. The old building was destroyed by fire and in 1884 a new two story brick building replaced the old one. This building still stands and is being used they the Cumberland Presbyterian church. In the early days the community was called Sunnyside and the church known as the temple of the Lord. The school was called New Hope Academy. There was also a dormitory where students lived and attended school. Billy Wilson and John Hudson helped to get the news building started. some of the teachers were Nancy Rheal Barber and her son Will, Mrs. Billy Wilson Lattimore and Lawrence Grayson, no records can be found for earlier teachers. (there is more to this article but I just printed the earliest records) I discovered this when I wrote the history of the New Hope Church. 3. Well I'll be darn. There is a New Hope Loop off the East Valley Rd just north of Hicks Chapel. I was using Yahoo maps and it wouldn't show up but it will on Google. That must be where the church/academy is.
