I've studied census records in about three states for 1880 when he was 8 years old and I haven't found anything that looks like a possibility to be him. Thanks.

Do you know if they could have gone to live with another relative or party as a servant? If so they would have been listed under the head of households name. Have you check out the poorhouse section of the census, there is another name for them besides the poor house, just can't remember right now?? ---. These listing are usually at the back of the regular section of the census-- Have you checked out the orphanages in that area?
