Bill, yeah, some firewood does smell like old tires! I meant that I resent paying for what was given freely. I don't resent paying for other stuff that has been made available like censuses, etc. Yes, I realize that it costs to have a website, and databases, etc. but it is the way in which they present it. I know that none of you will understand what I am trying to say, but it all comes down to false advertising but no one ever calls them on it. You're told it's available to search but when you go there, you have to join, which costs money that some cannot afford. That in itself can make a newbie searcher with no funds get discouraged about searching further. ginny
You make some very valid points, Bill. The census alone costs quite a bit to buy complete and Ancestry has hired people to do nothing but transcribe this so we have searchable indexes. I, for one, willl pay for that because it has been a great verifiable source of information in the past. In some ways, you can look at it like a software license. Yes it's information, but it's useless without the means to access it (i.e. CD, executable file, etc.). Just remember that anything you get from TN Archives or your State Dept. of Health comes with a hefty fee for each copy, so even that information isn't free. I agree that some things should never be charged for and as long as we're all willing to share what we can through sources like the Marion Co. website, so much the better. You never know what little tidbit just might break down the brick wall for someone else! Merry Christmas to everyone and good luck with your research...
