Just a general note about one possibility for the origins of the White surname... In 1646 in Dunoon, Scotland Clan Campbell massacred Clan Lamont (pronounced Lamb-it). One John Lamont was among those 36 clan leaders hanged in a tree in the church yard. His wife, Mary Young Lamont, escaped in an open boat across the 39 miles of ocean, with her four young children, to County Antrim, Northern Ireland. They landed near a small town called Larne. There, all four of her sons took on new surnames to protect themselves from Clan Campbell. John, the oldest son, took the name Sitlington for a stream that ran on their Scotland estate. The two middle sons took the names White and Green. The White brother was most likely named William. I do not know anything more about the Green brother. The youngest son, Andrew, took his mother's maiden name...Young. Andrew was my 7th great grandfather. John Sitlington and his brother, Andrew Young, and their children and grandchildren, ran a linen manufacturing mill near Larne for about 96 years. They began migrating to America about 1737. The stone linen mill still stands today. The Youngs and Sitlingtons landed in Augusta Co., VA. William Young migrated to KY about 1777. John Young, married his cousin Mary White in Augusta Co., VA, so some of William White's descendants did migrate to America. Capt. John Young was an aid to Gen.
