Hi Ron and List Members, Yes, the surnames which I am interested in are Shelton, Prigmore, Kelly, Pryor, Hudson and also Street. I am in a working situation that will not let me concentrate on family research for several more weeks. I will be able to put together more info to help you at that time. These families, along with other first pioneer settlers of Tennessee were strongly connected and through the years (1790's - 1900's) the families intermarried more than a few times. The Sheltons and the Prigmores undoubtedly met in early Grainger County and Knox County Tennessee (1790 - 1812) and lived there. Land and court records show this. Ephraim Layfayette Prigmore b. 1783 married Margaret Kelly b. 1789 They were married in 1809. Margaret Kelly was the daughter of Alexander Kelly Sr. died/drowned in Sequatchie River 1810. James Ore Prigmore was one of the sons of Ephraim Layfayette Prigmore and Margaret Kelly. James Ore Prigmore b.1810 married Elizabeth Shelton b. 1817. Elizabeth Shelton was the daughter of Richard Shelton and Temperance Street Shelton. The first son of James Ore Prigmore and Elizabeth Shelton was named: John Street Prigmore (after Elizabeth's Uncle, John Street) The second child was named Temperance Jane Prigmore, she married Phillip Green Pryor. Their youngest daughter, Mary Amanda Prigmore married William Pryor. It is my understanding, from studying deeds and the census records, that the Kellys, The Sheltons and The Prigmores all had land which adjoined. The Pryor family was also near by. Knowing the closeness of the families and how they depended on "The Mill" (years before the Ketner family acquired the mill and Gilliam Shelton's land) certainly indicates how my great-grandfather came by his name, "Ephraim Kelly Shelton". Ephraim Kelly Shelton was the fifth son of Gilliam. I wish that I had time to help out further on this . . . Please send me a note after June 14th and I will put together more information to send you. Try an internet search for "James Ore". - The Sheltons, Prigmores and Kellys and Streets were strongly connected to this man in early Tennessee history. David Shelton and George Shelton were two signers of The Cumberland Compact - 1780. There is strong circumstantial evidence to indicate that David Shelton was closely related to Richard Shelton. It is my belief that James Ore was probably instrumental in guiding these families to Marion County and the surrounding Indian Lands. Keep in mind that the "North Carolina Land Grants in Tennessee" brought many early pioneers together in North Eastern Tennessee, before moving to Marion County. These families already had strong bonds before they actually made the move to Marion County. Looking at Deed Books A and B for Marion County - you can see that Anthony Street (the father of Temperance Street Shelton) and Alexander Kelly were two of the very first to legally settle in the area. Any help on Gilliam's wife, who I believe to be a "Hudson" would be appreciated. Thank You! Victoria Toms
