The Hendrix Family came into the Sequatchie Valley early in the nineteenth century. On the Marion County records several different men were in the valley prior to 1820. In the early deed records, Luke Hendrix purchased a number of tracts of land in the Third Dist on the Little Sequatchie and Sequatchie Rivers in the spring of 1820. He received a 250 ac tract from the Tennessee Grant #5840; 140 ac adjacent to this from Thomas N. Clark; 125 ac on the Little Sequatchie River that was adjacent to the above; 119 ac adjacent to the above; and 150 ac on Battle Creek in the third dist adjacent to George Lowery's reservation. Luke began to sell off some of these lands by 1822. We note that Luke Hendrix age 80 and born in NC was living with Jesse J. Griffith, probably a son-in-law, in 1850. Another Hendrix was Squire Hendrix, who was the assignee of Ezekiel England for 160 ac of land in the third dist on the Sequatchie River. Squire purchased this land May 1820. Then there was Micajah Hendrix who received three tracts of land in the third dist, one for 67 ac on the Sequatchie River on March 6, 1820 and the others for 100 ac on the Little Sequatchiee River on March 16, 1820, then in 1826, he purchased a lot in Jasper known as Lot #10. The above mentioned Squire Hendrix was born in eastern Tennessee and settled in Marion Co., TN sometime prior to 1820. He left the valley prior to 1850 and traveled to MO, where he died. His son, Grabriel, remained in the Valley and married Mary Hicks, a native of VA. Mary Hicks was a descendant of the Borden family of the Shenandoah Valley fame. Her ancestor was Benjamin Borden, who according to family tradition, sent the King of England, a pair of bull buffaloes. The King in return granted to Benjamin Borden, a two mile tract of land that became known as Borden's Grant and is located in the present Rockbridge Co, VA. Gabriel and Mary Hicks had at least eight children, Malvina born 1828, Delila born 1830, James, Elijah, Harvey born 1837, Mary, Elijah and Lemuel born in 1844, Grabriel Hendrix born 2/16/1837, in what is now the 6th dist of Sequatchie Co, TN, but formerly Marion, married on Jan 21, 1858 in Sequatchie Court to Mary Ann Pickett. She was born in Sequatchie Co, TN, then Marion, in 1839, the daughter of Jesse and Margaret Farmer Pickett. Harvey and Mary Ann had 11 children, John S, who died early in life, Mary, who died young, Sarah E., died young, Laura B., who married Joseph Rodgers and lived near daughter, Tennessee, Lemeul L., who died young, William, died young, Adam, who married Vina Summers; Jacob, who moved to Winslow, AR; Martha who married Erby Gates; Luke who died young and James. During the Civil War, Harvey served with Col Goings in the 6th Tenn Reg Cal and operated near his home. He became very ill during the War and was medically discharged shortly after enlistment. After the formation of Sequatchie County, Harvey took a minor role in the development of that county as an overseer of roads but was shortly replaced by Levi Hackworth in July 1858. Helen L.
