University of Virginia's email was acting this way yesterday. It is a virus, a worm, called Bugbear or something like that. For those with Norton Antivirus, there is a fix for it which was placed on their site yesterday morning. Do a live update and that should clean your system. I do not know, but assume that this is widespread enough that McAfee probably has a fix as well. Hope this helps!
