Betty -- I believe that your husband's sister--who was married to a Roosevelt KILGORE -- may be related to my KING family in the Whitwell, TN area -- they were also miners. Perhaps someone out there can help fill in the gaps in both our families-- {Betty - more pictures of my KING family lsited below are being sent to your site -- you already have the picture of my gg-grandfather, JOHN KING--with his dog-- when he allegedly worked in the circus}. Here is my gg-grandfather's family -- hopefully, there is a connection with either your husband's family or someone else out there. Family of GG-Grandfather: JOHN E. KING and GG-Grandmother(?) NANCY J. MITCHELL: JOHN E. KING (born July 24, 1837 in IRELAND); allegedly came here from Ireland to fight in the Civil War and then apparently deserted -- thus on every census he stated he and his parents were born in PENNSYLVANIA. However, in the 1920 census -- a year before he died on July 25, 1921 at the age of 84 years, he stated that HE was born in Ireland, his mother was born in GERMANY and his father was born in IRELAND. (My brick wall) John King worked as a coal miner in Whitwell, Tennessee and Alabama. The family story was that his children kept trying to get him to go down and get his Civil War pension, and he kept putting them off. (Apparently afraid of prison for desertion). (John King allegedly was also married to a JANE MITCHELL LAYNE -- no proof on this or whether she was the mother of any of the children listed below) GG-GRANDMOTHER (?--no proof positive) NANCY J. MITCHELL -- born July 15, 1836 in Tennessee; died December 21, 1912 at the age of 76 years in Durham, Walker Co., GA picking up coal from the railroad tracks -- hit by train. Unknown parents -- Children of JOHN E. KING and NANCY J. MITCHELL (?): (seven children) 1) MARY KING, born ca 1866 in Tennessee; 2) MARGARET KING, born 1870 in TN; died June, 1938; married on March 10, 1885 a JOHN GRIMES; 3) WILLIAM KING; born 1871 in Sequatchie Valley, Sequatchie Co., TN; died June 28, 1912 in Tracy City, Grundy Co., TN; 4) LONNIE KING, born July 29, 1871 in Tennessee; died Aug. 5, 1956 in Whitwell, Marion Co., TN; married twice: (1) Lucy Edna Maughan and (2) Cora Jordan. Lonnie received a medal from the Tennessee Coal & Iron Company for 40 years of sercvice as a miner in August, 1927 according to the Sasquatch Newspaper. Lonnie's picture will next be uploaded to the Marion County site. 5) ALICE KING, born ca 1867 in TN; married on January 29, 1883 a JAMES KILGORE. They had one child named TOM KILGORE--born ca 1891; died Feb. 25, 1920 in Grundo Co., TN and is buried at the Oak Grove Cemetery in Grundy Co., TN -- IS THIS THE CONNECTION??? 6) IDA BELLE KING, born Feb. 17, 1876 in TN; died Jan. 28, 1955 in Birmingham, Jefferson Co., Ala. married ca 1896 a ROBERT LEE HOOPER. 7) THOMAS EDWARD "ED" KING, born September, 1878, in Petros, Morgan Co., TN; -- MY G-GRANDFATHER -- married my G-GRANDMOTHER, NETTIE MOORE RANKIN (d/o WILLIAM M. RANKIN (1842-1897) and MARY JANE MOORE (1847-?) in Whitwell, Marion Co., TN on March 25, 1900. However, at the age of 36 years, my g-grandfather, "Ed" KING, was killed in a mine explosion in Mulga, Alabama, in 1914 -- where he had taken his family to work another mine traveling from Whitwell, TN. (See newspaper clipping below in the Birmingham, Alabama newspaper on October 5, 1914) -- NOTE: This also has a picture of my g-grandfather being brought out on a stretcher from that mine since he didn't die until a few days later -- if there is anyone out there who could obtain a good copy of that picture and article from the newspaper, I would gladly pay for same). "Sixteen Dead in Mine Explosion" "Ed King, of Whitwell, Victim of Explosion at Mulga, Ala. Monday" "Birmingham, Ala. October 5.-- "Sixteen men are known to be dead and twelve injured as the result of a pocket gas explosion at the Mulga mines of the Woodward Iron company, near Ensley, this morning. Removal of the bodies is proceeding tonight, only nine of the sixteen dead having been brought out p to eight o'clock. "Mine officials state the explosion as purely local and was caused by striking a pocket of gas. What ignited the gas has not been determined. The mine itself was not seriously damaged. Mulga mines had a previous explosion April 20, 1910, when thirty-five were killed. "Three of the dead have been identified: Ike Calsoki, Ed King and Charles Campbell, white miners. "Mr. King was formerly of Whitwell." My g-grandmother, NETTIE RANKIN KING, was now left at age 33 years with three young sons--although in later years she married an AVERY MONELL, a widower--of whom I have a picture but know little about. The three sons were: 1) WILLIAM EMMETT KING, born Jan. 27, 1900 in Whitwell, Marion Co., TN; (married a Milner YOUNG); died Jan. 21, 1953 in Tallahassee, Leon Co., Fla.; 2) ERNEST EDWARD KING (my grandfather), born July 6, 1903 in Petros, Morgan Co., TN; died Jan. 28, 1956 in Homestead, Dade Co., FLA; married my grandmother, SARA MARIE THOMAS on June 2, 1926 in Duval Co., FLA; they divorced ca 1939-1940. Ernest married again a MARGEAN (?) ca 1947. 3) JOHN ELBERT KING, born June 21, 1905, in Petros, Morgan co., TN; died July 1, 1963 in Birmingham, Jefferson Co., ALA; married a MARIETTA LANGLEY. Any and all information and/or pictures on my KING family gladly shared and welcomed. Cheryl Cook Singleton San Diego, CA
Cheryl thank you . boy the bells are ringing in my head now LOL . I am sorry but my niece that was doing the Kilgore genealogy is no longer on line. Perhaps I can get one of the other nieces or nephews on line to copy this off and send to her. Shirley Kilgore Knight, which hopefully is still on this list and is listed in the surnames of the web page is a cousin to her also. I do believe she does have all of my niece Betty's information as well. That is very interesting information about your family, you can sure tell you have really worked hard on your research. The information, I do have is on the other computer and I really need to transfer it too. Hopefully before long I can and will be able to share then. I do know they were miners among other jobs as well :-). thanks Betty
