    1. [TNMARION] Social Security Death Index site
    2. Below is the URL for the social security death index: _http://ssdi.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/ssdi.cgi_ (http://ssdi.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/ssdi.cgi) Enter what info you have, easy search is just name, if you have pretty common name, use advanced search to input b / d dates, etc. Choose which found names are likely yours, a form comes up in columns, if you think yours, under the TOOLS column click on SS-5 and below is what comes up to order, not any type of complete record, but a copy of the ORIGINAL application which the person sent in (or gave to employer) when applying for social security coverage, i.e, when first went to work for wages from which SS taxes would be withheld. Some years ago I rec’d a copy of a grandfather with 1937 application date, the year SS began, and at that time it cost me $7; sorry, seems to be more now. It was in his handwriting, the place where he currently worked and lived, his birth info, and names of his mother and father, so there is a lot of information on it. Good luck, Aileen “Please send me a photocopy of the actual application for a Social Security card (Form SS-5--Social Security Number Record Third Party Request for Photocopy) filed by the person listed below. I obtained this information from the Social Security Death Master file at RootsWeb.com, Inc. who obtained it from the Social Security Death Master file, originally compiled by the Social Security Administration. My understanding is that the fee is $27, when the Social Security number is provided or $29 if the Social Security number is unknown or incorrect. Enclosed is a check or money order for $___________, made payable to the Social Security Administration. Thank you for your assistance” **************Planning your summer road trip? 1. Re: [TNMARION] SSI death records
    2. bill
    3. Betty, I don't think there is any site that gives you all of the social security death info. What you are probably thinking of is the social security death index which does give you the date of birth, date of death, social security number, last address on record and the state where the social security number was issued. Just google SSDI and you will find it at the top of the list. You can then order the complete record. I have never done so but I know folks who have and some of those files are chocked full of info on the person. Last time I checked it was about $35 to 40 for that. No way to get it for free so you'll probably never see one. And those records are very scarce for deaths before the 1980's and nonexistent before 1960. Also keep in mind that even though it was a law that the counties had to report births starting in 1908, not all counties reported every birth. Some fault for this lies with the county officials and poor record keeping, but most of the time it was because of the fact that most births took place at home and the family did not report to the local authorities. It is hard for us today to fathom not reporting a birth, but back then it was very common place and never given a second thought. > > With this in mind, there is a source of records called "delayed birth records" available. These records are also only available through the Tennessee Vital Records Office. Most of these records were produced because of Social Security. If someone was applying for Social Security they had to send in proof of their birth. Well, if they did not have an official birth certificate from the state of Tennessee they could apply for a "delayed birth record" which the state would have issued. In order to receive this type of record the person would of had to supply the state with other evidence to prove their birth. I have seen copies of Bible pages used as proof, I have also seen letters written by the persons Mother or Father that were notarized and other forms of documentation. > > So, if you can not find a birth record from the time frame of 1908-1940, it is quite possible the person could have filed for a delayed birth record. Usually by 1940 or so all counties in Tennessee were pretty consistent in reporting their births. > > Hope this helps.Sincerely,Melissa Barker > > > > > From: Debbiekgolds@aol.com> Date: Thu, 3 Apr 2008 16:27:24 -0400> To: tnmarion@rootsweb.com> Subject: [TNMARION] -Melissa> > what about birth records before 1908? 3. I viewed them at our county genealogy library which is somewhat unique in that it has a lot of records - not something you would normally find in a county. The familysearch center would be the place to go but I think you have to place an "order" before you go and wait till they send them from Utah or Idaho or some other furen county.
