Barbara, The Looney's Creek community located near Whitwell, which is thought to be the Powell's Crossroads community now, had a post office beginning in 1851 with Joseph B. Kelly as postmaster. In October 1884, the post office was moved from its former location and renamed for the Sunnyside community before being discontinued in July 1890 with John Hudson being the last postmaster. It seems unlikely that another community in Marion County had the same Sunnyside name during the same period of time that your grandfather attended school. There was a school at Looney Creek early on so it is possible that this school or another in the community was once known as New Hope Academy. I hope this helps. It is unincorporated and it is in Hancock County, TN You got past Tazewell on Hwy 63 which is Mulberry Gap Rd. and before you get to Parkley Hollow Rd. It is close to the Kentucky boarder. There are actually three New Hope Academy's listed in TN, but I am sure they are not the one in Sunnyside. It is probably no longer there. I found a Sunnyside, TN. It is unincorporated and it is in Hancock County, TN You got past Tazewell on Hwy 63 which is Mulberry Gap Rd. and before you get to Parkley Hollow Rd. It is close to the Kentucky boarder. There are actually three New Hope Academy's listed in TN, but I am sure they are not the one in Sunnyside. It is probably no longer there. Now I'm beginning to wonder. James H. Latimer a school teacher lived in Jasper in 1880. And I find reference to one of the old post offices near Jasper being Sunnyside. Maybe the New Hope Academy was actually near Jasper....? The academy name doesn't have to relate to the location - there's a New Hope Academy in Williamson Co, Tn today and there is no New Hope town or community in the county.
