Thank you so much for what you have written. It's more than I even hoped for. I found one other bit tonight and perhaps you can help identify the cemetery. We have pictures of the funeral but don't know the cemetery or where it is. We have a letter written on Feb. 28, 1930 by L. W. Rhodes, of Rhodes and Sloan, Managers, Interstate Life and Accident Co. office at 518 Volunteer Building, Chattanooga, Tennessee. L.W. Rhodes wrote it to his uncle Bob Rhodes in LaGrande, Oregon, to report that “Papa died on February 9th.”…“He had been sick for nearly a year with cancer.” L.W. Rhodes reported to his uncle that "Papa" had been buried near “the old home place in South Pittsburg. The Cemetery is on the hill west of this little village.” He said "Papa" had been hospitalized in Chattanooga for four weeks. Can you see in the census who Papa was? And the cemetery where he is buried? Is there an obituary I could get from somewhere? Thank you, thank you, thank you. Frank Falls Church, VA **************Get trade secrets for amazing burgers. Frank, The great uncle you mentioned appears to be William W. Rhodes - oldest child of Absalom and Sarah Rhodes. He had a son but his name was Lawrence Wesley Rhodes not Lemuel. William W. apparently remained in Marion county until he died as his widow lived there in 1930. The son Lawrence and his family were living in Hamilton county in 1930. William W. and his wife Melvina J. Harris are both buried in the Patton (Annex) Cemetery in South Pittsburg near the high school. This is all from the census records and other Marion records I have access to. I am not related and have no further info on this family. I've read the discussion about the Academy and I love the way everyone joins in to help. I have a question that concerns my wife's family: Some of her relatives say they were originally from Pittsburg Landing, and others say it was South Pittsburg. Are they both right? The family name was Rhodes. Absalom Vernon Rhodes was born in Pikeville, TN Feb. 5, 1839 and died in Garber, OK Sept. 8, 1919. We have a picture of the Rhodes family on the front porch of an old house from before 1900. One of my wife's great uncles (nobody seems to know his name) died in a Chattanooga, TN hospital in 1930, was buried in South Pittsburg, and had a son named Lemuel W. Rhodes. Does anyone know this family? Frank S Falls Church, VA **************Get trade secrets for amazing burgers. Watch "Cooking with Tyler Florence" on AOL Food. Pittsburg Landing is near the Shiloh battlefield in Hardin county, Tennessee. There were some Rhodes living there in the late 1800's but your Absalom was living in Marion County in 1870 in the Sweedens/Sweetens Cove area. In 1880, he and his family were living in South Pittsburg. By 1900 he and his family were in Garfield Co, OK. In that 20 year gap between 1880 and 1900 I guess it's possible that they also lived in Hardin Co since it's on the way to Oklahoma. Let me be clear, we didn't clean the whole cemetery. Part of it was clean already and part of it was in need of more than we could do today, but we did mow and weed-eat much more that the graves of my kin and left it looking better than when we got there. We mostly worked in the middle section and around the edges. Then I attempted to do some really grow up areas, but I gave up on them today. **************Get trade secrets for amazing burgers. This morning a specially good friend went with me to the Gilliam Cemetery to weed-eat while I mowed. The cemetery surely looked better when we left than when we got there. Two gentlemen were over in the Gaines Cemetery side putting flags by the graves of the Vets. When they started to leave, they gave us several flags to use in decorating graves of the Vets in the Gilliam Cemetery. So thanks to these thoughtful men, several men who gave their lives for their country got flags as did several who died as Vets. **************Get trade secrets for amazing burgers. Ida first off , THANK YOU for cleaning up the cemetery. I for one really appreciate your effort and also know how important it is to show the respect to those gone on before us. I also am very aware of what hard work this is to get all the clean up done. Also thank you for accepting the flags from those fellows and placing them on the veterans graves. Wish we could personally thank them, but I am positive that you did that already. Also would like to add the name of Jesse Herbert McBee, WW I, buried in Cumberland View July 1968, to the list of veterans to be honored. >From a similar link for the private acts of Marion County (page 74), it appears that the school was originally established by an 1855-56 private act of Marion County and was originally called the Sequatchie Valley Academy. The 1909 act is mentioned again and says that the school name was changed and a New Hope Independent School district established by the 1909 private act of Marion county. Thanks to all who added names to list of veterans to remember for Memorial Day and every day. Like my Mama always used to say "Give me my flowers while I am still here." So, I think we should do the same with our veterans and tell them thanks while they are still here because whether they show it or not, it means a lot to them--and to us. And we should never forget the ones who are gone and honor them and all our loved ones when they are gone by keeping up their graves and not neglecting them or their memories. Tell our younger generations all about the ones who are gone, put down our memories on paper for others to enjoy, take pictures of everyone we know and write down who they are and the date and even a note or a story about what happened that day that was so special. This will all be important to future generations and to us as we get older and begin to realize whats really important in life. And most important of all, let the people u care about know that u do before its too late and its all just a memory or a "Memorial Day".
I think the New Hope Academy may have been right near the Sequatchie/Marion line. >From page 55 of the following link I surmise that the academy may have existed as a private instution up until 1909 when a private act of Sequatchie county made it a public school.
