The latest news I heard was that since it is at the bottom of Monteagle Mountain they decided to change the name to Sweet N' Low Cove! Wonder what that was all about. Seems like we had this same discussion a few years ago. Sorry...didn't mean to derail the help we were giving Frank. Just figured since we were bringing it up and spelling it different ways, maybe we should get some decision on it. Frank, the link for the Primitive Baptist Church Rolls/Minutes is this: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~tnmario2/areaphotoalbum.html Scroll down mid-way through the page and you'll see it listed in Green with the pages numbers below that. You can click on those and read the rolls and minutes (thank you Jerre Hookey for those). Donna (Bottle Creek! Frank, This discussion is probably not helping you much in finding family. After poking around in the census records and some current records, I think most of your Rhodes family that "stayed behind" ended up in Hamilton county. I don't know how much digging you want to do but there is a way to get obituaries going way back as well as fairly current ones. http://www.lib.chattanooga.gov/localHist/obitnote.html I would do some research first and get a complete list of all the obits you want because they charge $10 for each order plus $1 per obit requested. I see that the obits of L. W. Rhodes and L. W. Rhodes, Jr. are listed as well as Mrs. W. W. Rhodes. If the death was within the last few years you can sometimes find the obit by simply doing a search on a person's name (put it in quotes to eliminate a lot of junk results). The US Geological Survey says the official name is now Sweetens Cove. It was offically called Swedens Cove prior to 2002 when a "board decision" changed it to Sweetens Cove. Wonder what that was all about. Seems like we had this same discussion a few years ago. Thanks Bill. I know we've gone over this on the list before too. I wasn't sure if we ever reached a consensus. It's one of those names like Fiery Gizzard....don't know if we'll ever know the true story! :) Like Betty said, even the signs are conflicting! Thanks for the clarification of the census districts. The people that live there still argue over what the name really is. The earliest map I've see (1865) calls it Sweedens Cove. The 1940's soil survey maps call it Swedens Cove and the current official Tennessee county map calls it Sweetens Cove. District 11 was Sweeden's Cove. District 12 was Monteagle and Tracy City which became a part of Grundy county in 1868. Does anybody know the real history behind the name? As I have family from that area, I've always wanted to know. My Dad said that he always thought it was named after the Sweeten/Sweeton family that lived in that area. Others have said it's actually Sweden's Cove named after the Swedish settlers of the area. As early as 1830, Moses and John Sweeten were living in Marion County. By 1850, there was a Joseph Sweeten living in Dist. 12 -- was that the same area as the current Sweeten's Cove? Thanks, Donna
that we did have the same discussion and it used to be one of Betty's pet peeves too. LOL Thank you Bill for clearing that up on the "board decision". My Husband was raised there and lots of his relatives lived in the Cove as well. I am sure if you were to mail a letter to some one that lived in the cove, to Sweetens Cove or Sweedens Cove they would both get there eventually. :-) Back to the original subject though -- Why were the two churches named or called the same? I never thought to ask before --like so many other things I just thought it was because they were-- period. Never thought to question it really. Mac says he thought it was after the family that settled there and not the people from Sweden. I don't think any one knows for sure, but I am guessing some one started spelling it like it sounded and that is how it got both names. Ida, Donna, and Bill Mc and others, What is Sweetens Cove? Is there a church associated with the Patton (Annex) Cemetery in South Pittsburg? I'd like to write there to see if family remains in the area? Thank you so much for sending me your help with the South Pittsburg roots of my wife's Rhodes ancestors. William W.
