----- Original Message ----- Subj: Genealogy scam Date: 09/03/2000 6:30:57 AM Mountain Daylight Time From: plfleming@shelbynet.net (Phyllis Fleming) I received this message after it was forwarded to the INGENWEB state coordinator: About 2 weeeks ago we received a complaint from an Archives submitter that her materials were found on a genealogy subscription service: www.familydiscovery.com The submitter was able to do a little digging and found that they were linking to her files housed on her server, but shrink-wrapped inside a frame so it appears to be THEIR work. About 10 days ago, to investigate this, I signed up with familydiscovery. To date, I have not received a user id or password to get inside. The registered owners of the web site gave bogus telephone numbers in their registration. One number goes to a recorded message line; the other to a carpet company. Some of the e-mail adds on their web site bounce. Standing on the outside and looking through the window, it appears that several folks' web sites have been prize-mined: http://www.familydiscovery.com/whatsnew.htm The Storey Co., IA and the Washington Co., PA stuff seem to come from USGenWeb sites. Some of the other IA and NC stuff seems to come from non-USGW sites. None of the materials seem to be housed at either rootsweb or usgennet. If anyone out there is or has been a member of familydiscovery -- or has been ripped off by them, I ["Joy Fisher" jfisher@ucla.edu>] would like to hear from you. Permission is granted to forward this message. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= wally@calweb.com

I recieved this from Franklin County list. sounds like a terrific idea. Let Judy know if you are going to be in the area. You can notify her at jphilps@edge.net who knows maybe you could get a 100 people together too. Betty McBee macbetty@worldshare.net Hi there, For those of you who are local to Franklin County, I have recently found out that BYU in Utah are doing DNA Research Genealogy study. Molecular Genealogy links individuals together in "family trees" based on unique identification of genetic markers. In order to reconstruct molecular genealogies it is necessary to utilize known biological relationships and correlate this information with the transmission of genetic markers through time. Throughout the world there is intense interest in the origins and histories of people. Some of this information is transmitted through oral or written histories. Unfortunately, the history of some peoples and communities has been lost or destroyed through time. By utilizing the genetic record that each individual retains of his/her past, it is possible to reveal important clues as to their origin and relationship of any individual toother persons orpopulations. It will be possible to establish ancient immigration and migration patterns... Anyway, I was very interested because my grandmother would not talk about our Indian heritage. I want to do this to see if I have any Indian blood or not. I checked to see how I could participate in this study. I was told if I could get 100 + people, they could be here in about 3 months. You have to be 18. They will take about two tbsp of blood and it will be drawn by an experienced phlebotomist. You have to also have a four generation pedigree chart filled out as best you can. This will be used for future study. It is completely private. The results will be under lock and key. It takes about 10 mins. to do and they will pay you $10. Shoot, I would pay them $10.:) If any of you locals are interested, call or e-mail me. Thanks, Judy Phillips Franklin County

Dino hunting is Hunting for Dinosaur bones. Joyce and I went to the field for a week with the Denver Museum of Natural History looking for dinosaurs. We were in Wyoming on a 113,000 acre private ranch. We found lots of neat stuff. Felt like a little kids that owned their own candy store. Guess this is the little kid in all of us that never has grown up. Don't expect to, it's too much fun. Except for the wind and heat, it was ok. Still prefer the Holiday Inn to a tent. I have posted a web page about what we found and you can view it here: http://www.noelm.com/dinodig/ The web site has lots of photos and takes several minutes to load so be patient. It is well worth it, at least we think so. Hope you enjoy it. Noel and Joyce

If anyone has a transcript of the 1850 Marion County, TN census, I need a lookup for William B. Smith and his wife, Ann Caroline (Pack) Smith, who were married in Dade County, GA in 1843. Their children were: 1. Noah Smith, born 1844. 2. Mary Nancy Smith born 1846 3. William Smith, born August 1850 4. Andrew Jackson Smith, born September 9, 1852 5. Moses Sylvester Smith, born October 27, 1857 William B. Smith died between 1857 and 1860, probably in DeKalb County, TN, which is where his wife and children grew up. Nearly all of them later moved to Texas. I am trying to help a distant cousin locate this man's parents. We know he was in Marion County by 1857, and may have been there in 1850. Hope you can help! Thanks! Will Smith
