The East Tennessee Historical Society invites members and guests to attend one of four Civil War genealogy workshops in February conducted by noted lecturer and author Dr. George K. Schweitzer. Two workshops will be hosted in lower East Tennessee in McMinn and Hamilton counties. Workshop participants will learn how to determine if an ancestor served in the Civil War, how to locate records for both Confederate and Union veterans, and how to prove descent. Research will focus on Tennessee, but much of the information will apply to other states, as well. The workshop is being held in conjunction with the East Tennessee Historical Society's new heritage program, Civil War Families of Tennessee. Workshops are free and open to the public. A schedule of the lower East Tennessee workshops is as follows: February 16, 2002 - Athens, TN - 10 a.m. to Noon McMinn County Courthouse, Blue Room Cosponsored by the McMinn County Historical Society February 16, 2002 - Chattanooga, TN - 3 to 5 p.m. Chattanooga-Hamilton County Bicentennial Library, 1001 Broad St. Cosponsored by the Chattanooga Area Historical Association, the Chattanooga-Hamilton County Bicentennial Library, the Dade County (GA) Historical Society, and the Delta Genealogical Society For directions to the various meeting locations, please contact the following organizations: Feb. 16 - McMinn County Historical Society, 423-744-3911 Feb. 16 - Chattanooga-Hamilton County Bicentennial Library, 423-757-5317 For additional information about the East Tennessee Historical Society genealogy workshops, please contact Cherel Henderson, ETHS Associate Director, 865-215-8823, cherel@east-tennessee-history.org, or visit the ETHS web site at www.east-tennessee-history.org
John Shoemake's son, Sampson, married Martha Smith in Marion County on 26 February 1854. This was the widow's statement on her Pension papers. Martha was born about 1840. The family later lived in Bledsoe County, then Bedford County where Sampson died in 1875 in Fairfield. Their son, William F., is believed to have been born about 1856. There was a land grant to a John Shoemake in 1855 in Marion County for 230 acres on which his house and farm were situated. The boundaries name James Prigmore (sp), D. Sharshean (sp), Henry Smith now W. Turner's line. Also mentioned are Hale's branch and Anderson Creek. This Henry Smith may be related to Martha Smith who married Sampson Shoemake. Any clues or suggestions about this Shoemake/Shumake family will be appreciated. Jeanne Strong
John Shoemake was listed in the 1850 census of Marion County with a wife, Mary, and children James A., Sarah, Sampson, John, Lorena, Morris K. and Mary. They were listed as mulatto, however, the same family is listed in 1840 in Bledsoe County in which John is white and the remaining members are free-colored. Sons Sampson and Morris K. were born in Bledsoe County in 1827 and 1832 respectively.

I hope its okay to post this to these various lists that I'm on. If not, I'm sorry. I'm looking for help on finding Civil War records on my ancestor, Edmond VICKERY d. about 1880 probably in Wayne County, KY. I can't manage to find anything on him or his wife other than she was a widow in the 1880 census there. She was reportedly born in Tennessee and Russell and Wayne Counties in KY. My aunt says he fought in the Civil War but we don't know what side. I don't know anything about Civil War records. Are there any suggestions what for and where I should be looking? Thanks... I am trying to find further information on Robert Davis b. in NC abt. 1750 who could possibly be Fountain Davis' father. Because of time frames of move to Tn. and area of North Carolina that Fountain and Robert lived in North Carolina. At the time of Robert Davis death in 1835 he lived in Marion Co., Tn. married to Lucinda Malone Davis who he married in 1808. I believe that this was not his first marriage because of his age. Fountain Davis is found on the 1836 tax list in Marion County, Tn. The Fountain Davis is family is as follows Fountain Davis b. abt 1793 in North Carolina married Diana b. abt 1816 in Tn. This is a powerful editorial .. Really touching....... Subject: Editorial from a Romanian newspaper An ode to America Why are Americans so united? They don't resemble one another even if you paint them! They speak all the languages of the world and form an astonishing mixture of civilizations. Some of them are nearly extinct, others are incompatible with one another, and in matters of religious beliefs. Still, the American tragedy turned three hundred million people into a hand put on the heart. Nobody rushed to accuse the White House, the army, the secret services that they are only a bunch of losers. Nobody rushed to empty their bank accounts. Nobody rushed on the streets nearby to gape about. The Americans volunteered to donate blood and to give a helping hand. After the first moments of panic, they raised the flag on the smoking ruins, putting on T-shirts, caps and ties in the colors of the national flag. They placed flags on buildings and cars as if in every place and on every car a minister or the president was passing. On every occasion they started singing their traditional song: "God Bless America!". Silent as a rock, I watched the charity concert broadcast on Saturday once, twice, three times, on different TV channels. There were Clint Eastwood, Willie Nelson, Robert de Niro, Julia Roberts, Cassius Clay, Jack Nicholson, Bruce Springsteen, Silvester Stalone, James Wood, and many others whom no film or producers could ever bring together. The American's solidarity spirit turned them into a choir. Actually, choir is not the word. What you could hear was the heavy artillery of the American soul. What neither George W. Bush, nor Bill Clinton, nor Colin Powell could say without facing the risk of stumbling over words and sounds, was being heard in a great and unmistakable way in this charity concert. I don't know how it happened that all this obsessive singing of America didn't sound croaky, nationalist, or ostentatious! It made you green with envy because you weren't able to sing for your country without running the risk of being considered chauvinist, ridiculous, or suspected of who-knows-what mean interests. I watched the live broadcast and the rerun of its rerun for hours listening to the story of the guy who went down one hundred floors with a woman in a wheelchair without knowing who she was, or of the Californian hockey player, who fought with the terrorists and prevented the plane from hitting a target that would have killed other hundreds or thousands of people. How on earth were they able to bow before a fellow human? Imperceptibly, with every word and musical note, the memory of some turned into a modern myth of tragic heroes. And with every phone call, millions and millions of dollars were put in a collection aimed at rewarding not a man or a family, but a spirit which nothing can buy. What on earth can unite the Americans in such a way? Their land? Their galloping history? Their economic power? Money? I tried for hours to find an answer, humming songs and murmuring phrases which risk of sounding like commonplaces. I thought things over, but I reached only one conclusion. Only freedom can work such miracles! ------=_NextPart_000_000D_01C14D80.B63D2E20-- --------------99BA10568D71FE1B673EBDE5-- --WebTV-Mail-23363-402--
