    1. [TNMARION] USGenWeb Pages & Server
    2. Noel C. Matthews
    3. Many of you have been having trouble in reaching various state and county pages. Also several other genealogical pages and sites are also down. Here is why: Last night, the server that houses the many of the individual county and state web sites (pages) failed completely and finally. It is dead, dead, dead!!! Everything hosted on the USGenNet server is offline and unreachable. This includes almost a dozen domains (including ALHN and TNGenWeb) and over 500 individual website accounts. The USGenNet board has decided to purchase a new server to the tune of about $5,000. This has to be done immediately in order to get all of the various projects back on line. It can't be delayed. Most of the advanced funding has been advanced by Fred Smoot in hopes that the various individuals of USGenWeb, the users like you and me, will make donations to cover this cost. ALHN Marion County, Tennessee and TNGenWeb Williamson County, Tennessee have pledged $100 together towards the new server. If any of you wish to make individual donations towards the new server you can do so by sending your check to: Rhoda Fone, Treasurer USGenNet 999 Bridgeport Way Rio Vista, CA 94571 An added bonus to contributors is that those who have donated $100 or more are considered sustaining members and are entitled to vote in the upcoming USGenNet election, when a new Board of Directors will be elected. All donations are tax deductible, and even $5 or $10 is a gift that USGenWeb would be grateful for, and would be certainlly appreciated at this time. If you have any questions or need additional information please let me know. Cheers to all, Noel

    1. [TNMARION] Fw: Researching Perkins Family History - Marion County, TN
    2. Alma Beasley
    3. I found the email address below listed at http://www.noelm.com/marion/surname.html for Evelyn Skelton Sell. If this person is still a subscriber to the list, I would really like to correspond with her. I have only done a little research for these lines, but I believe the name Skelton was one of the surnames I came across somehow related to the Robinette Family. Most of the family I research in this area is my husband's lines. Those are surnames BEASLEY, DEAKINS, HALE, HORN(E), MCCLURE, PERKINS, ROBINETTE, SAPP and SMITH, William F (this was his maternal great grandfather). I believe some of my relatives were in this area in the early 1800's though and that would be BURGESS and LYONS. Any help from anyone on the list would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Alma Burgess Beasley Placentia, California ----- Original Message ----- From: Alma Beasley To: esell@inreach.com Sent: Saturday, November 30, 2002 9:08 AM Subject: Researching Perkins Family History My husband's grandfather, George Berry Beasley's sister, Julia Ann Beasley married Sam Perkins. This family of Perkins lived and many of the descendants still live in Marion County and mostly in the Whitwell area, I believe. Could this be the line of Perkins you are researching? If so, I would like to share info with you. Look forward to hearing from you. Thanks. Alma L. Beasley Placentia, California http://home.earthlink.net/~aalalabama mailto:aalalabama@earthlink.net

    1. [TNMARION] FREE links, resources and sites available
    2. Noel C. Matthews
    3. Greetings to all. Sometimes we forget about some of the great FREE links, resources and sites that are available for us to use to search our roots. Here are a few places that you can check for information on where and how to do your family tree. Cindi's List is a very comprehensive listing of just about everything that has to do with genealogy. There are lots of specific links that you can visit. Here is the link to it: http://www.CyndisList.com/index.htm There are also specific categories on each state there listing lots of places where you can go to find information. http://www.CyndisList.com/beginner.htm http://www.CyndisList.com/howtotut.htm Here are a couple more that you will find useful: Tennessee: http://www.CyndisList.com/tn.htm Here is the link to the county genealogy web site for Marion County, Tennessee: http://www.noelm.com/marion/home.html Every county in every state has a similar web site that has various types of information available. It is all done be volunteer labor so is FREE. Tennessee: Tennessee Genealogical Web Project: http://tngenweb.org or http://tngenweb.org/tnlinks.htm Here is the link to the United States Genealogy Web Project or USGenWeb where you can go to each state and then to each county within that state: http://www.usgenweb.org/ The USGenWeb Project also has a real good Help Section for new genealogy researchers. Here is how to get to it: http://www.usgenweb.org/researchers/researcher.html http://www.usgenweb.org/researchers/starting.html This last link is real good in how to really get started in researching your roots and where you came from. Here is the link to the American Local History Network or ALHN where you can go to each state and then to each county within that state (Marion County is a member of ALHN): American Local History Network: http://alhn.org/ Here is the link to another national genealogical network the American History and Genealogical Project or AHGP where you can go to each state and then to each county within that state: American History and Genealogical Project: http://www.ahgp.org/ The above three national genealogical projects should not be look at as competiting networks. Each is different, is run by different volunteers, each has different information about its counties, and all three are great for searching your roots. Visit all three and see what is different about each county listed. You might be surprised at what you find. I hope this type of information will be of help to you. If you have any other great sources or questions let me and the list know. Cheers, Noel Matthews TNMARION Marion County, TN List Manager Marion Co, TN ALHN: http://www.noelm.com/marion/home.html

    1. [TNMARION] 1880 Census for US
    2. Noel C. Matthews
    3. Here is a note that I received about the 1880 Census that is abailable for searching. You can get it down to a specific surname in a specific county. This is great news and is easy to use!! Noel Mormons give roots to online 1880 Census By Jefferson Graham, USA TODAY Folks interested in their roots get a huge boon today when the 1880 U.S. Census — the first searchable, complete Census — goes online. Volunteers from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which is renowned for its genealogical research facilities, spent 17 years inputting the 50 million entries into computers. The result can be found at: http://www.familysearch.org./ The Mormon Church calls this database, the latest addition to the wealth of genealogical data already available via the Net, the easiest way to date of finding ancestors born in the USA. "Censuses are among the most significant of family records," says church spokesman Richard Turley. The 1880 Census is particularly significant, because it is the first online Census to include former slaves, and the second Census in history to record blacks as individuals rather than as pieces of property. That year's Census also is highly regarded "because it's the first one that told us the names and birthplaces of the parents, which give genealogists more data to follow in their research," says Cyndi Howells, who runs the popular Web site Cyndislist.com, which links to some 170,000 pages. Famous names in the Census: writers Mark Twain and Herman Melville, Western star "Buffalo Bill" Cody, tycoon John D. Rockefeller, inventors Thomas Edison and Alexander Graham Bell, educator Booker T. Washington and abolitionist Frederick Douglass. Besides the year of birth and the birth state of his or her parents, entries in the 1880 Census include neighbors. "That's a clue to connect to previous generations," says Turley. "In the 1880s, relatives often lived together in a broad neighborhood." Genealogy is among the most popular online pastimes, thanks to the Net's easy access to databases worldwide as well as to numerous other sources, such as bulletin boards, for leads. While the pay site ancestry.com is the most popular with 3 million visitors a month, according to Nielsen//NetRatings, such free sites as ellisisland.org and the Mormon Church's familysearch.org often are overwhelmed with traffic whenever new databases are posted. Genealogy is a major component of the Mormon religion: The church is known for having the most extensive system of research facilities — 3,700 in all worldwide — open to all. While other commercial sites, such as ancestry.com, heritagequest.com and genealogy.com have bits and pieces of the 1880 Census, they're not searchable. "You have to put in state and country and look through page by page, just like looking at microfilm," Howells says. The Mormon Church previously released the 1880 Census on a set of 56 CD-ROMs. Howells expects familysearch .org "to be bombarded" today. The church expected 100,000 visitors the day in 1999 that it launched the familysearch site. Instead, it ended up with 1 million. "We portioned out quarter-hour segments to users to keep pace with the traffic," Turley says. "This time, we're better prepared."
