I have received pictures and news paper clippings and more . I am so excited. Noel and I will be pretty busy for awhile getting this up and going. Please keep them coming . It may take me awhile to get them on the pages though as I am just learning how to make web pages and I know Noel is very busy with some other sights he does as well. 3. Sandra , If you would like to send your photos to me by snail mail with a return address in more than one place , I can scan them for you and return them to you if you like? . If you do, please, not only identify the people in the photos but also tell me something about them that you remember . Such as where did they live, do you remember something special about visiting with them or them visiting with you. Was something special about the preparation for their visit? Did you have a special spot to play at their house etc.? Something that makes their memory special to you . Even if you just have a story or tale that you have heard about them from your ancestors , etc. I also would love to see some pictures of the scenery of the area as well. Please share your knowledge of the history you know of the area. We would find that so interesting to so many. I agree about putting on workable sights and links as well. thank you Betty

    3. Thank you for the nice welcome . Yes it is a good thing for Noel to lighten his load. He has always been so generous with his time and energy and anything else that was needed. This is all of our sight and list, so please , lets keep posting , especially our brick walls. You never know when some one just may have a wee bit of knowledge and think you already knew that, when you didn't. I know I have found myself in this same position as well. Also if you will click on "reply to all" and not just "reply", when answering, it will come back to the list instead of just to the person . I know several times I have wondered if some one else had sent the information to them or not. No way of knowing though unless we "reply to all". No matter how unimportant you might think your information is , it could be just the clue that person is looking for to help tumble that brick wall down. thank you Betty

    1. [TNMARION] Hi
    2. macbetty
    3. Thought perhaps I should introduce my self with that wonderful introduction Noel just gave me. LOL My Husband Frank , was raised in the South Pittsburg , Tn area. Although he left the area in 1961 , all of his relatives pretty much are still there , so we try to stay connected to Marion County. Guess you could say that is where our heart still remains? This web site belongs to all of us, as does this list. In my humble opinion it is only as good as we want to make it, as a group. http://www.noelm.com/marion/home.html I would truly appreciate any in -put from you on how we could spark up this sight and make it more useful to every one. Please don't hesitate to send me or Noel information that pertains to Marion County. Right now I have been thinking of putting on a page of memories from early residents of Marion County . If you know of any one that remembers the early days , please help me out here by sending their memories on to us. Even yours of how things have changed would be great too. . I will gladly format them in to story form, if you like, and send them back to you for your approval, before entering them on the web page if this will work out better for you . Another idea I have is adding pictures of Marion County . Now the pictures I have are mainly of South Pittsburg area, and not a whole lot at that. :-) . If you have any pictures , and are willing to share please send them to me along with a brief description of where and aprox. when it was taken. Old post cards would be great as well . Any other ideas? Please remember -- this is all of our web sight and will only be as good as you and I make it. I am looking forward to hearing from all of you . 1. [TNMARION] Gallagher /Hicks research
    2. jtsturtz
    3. I have been researching a g-g-grandfather, Edward Gallagher ( or Gallaher) who lived in Runningwater, TN at the time of the 1860 census. He was married to Bridget and had 5 children; William-9, John-7, David-5, Mary-3 and Ann-2. There was also a Stephen McDevitt living with them. Edward was born in 1819 in Dublin, Ireland. There is also an Edward Gallaher in the 1880 census with a wife, Lucinda Kersey and children Katie-18, Ellen-14, Daniel-8, Isaac-7, and Gracie-5. The age and the birthdate of Edward is the same as above. Both were born in 1819. So am going on the assumption it is the same Edward with a second wife. Lucinda Kersey was first married to a Rufus Rogers. I know that Gracie stayed in Marion County and married a John Walker Hicks. Gracie and John Hicks had 12 children. Am interested in hearing from anyone who is related or who has information about this family. Some of their children were James Daniel Hicks, William Edward Hicks, Joseph Elmore Hicks, Nancy Jane Hicks, Jesse Hicks, David Hicks, George Hicks, and Ira Patrick Hicks. I am also interested in knowing if there is a cemetery in Runningwater, TN and if anyone knows where members of this family are buried near Jasper, TN. Edward was father to William Gallagher who lived in McHenry, Ky in 1880 and later in Mystic, Iowa(1900). William is my great-grandfather.

    1. [TNMARION] USGenNet is once again visible on the WWW!
    2. Noel C. Matthews
    3. The following message was received from USGenNet: Good morning all, http://USGenNet.Org/ USGenNet is once again visible on the WWW! For the moment, however, account holders are unable to upload files until our SysAdmin. finishes working out the "bugs" and makes sure the new server is running smoothly. This shouldn't take more than another day or two, so try to be patient a bit longer. Also, USGenNet's search engines are not working. Once the other things are taken care of, the search engine database will be updated and the search engines will be activated. USGenNet is taking this opportunity to update our mail software to a type we hope will prove easier for list subscribers and listowners alike. This will be happening in the next few days as well. The most current information can now be found at our usual URL of www.usgennet.org and the temporary pages on Fred Smoot's domain will be coming down some time today. Thanks to everyone for your support and patience!! Ginger Cisewski President & Webmaster, USGenNet.Org

    1. [TNMARION] Tennessee

    3. This is what you will find when you get to our Tennessee... so, don't be surprised if you have the urge to stay.... Tennessee by Paul Hayden Schrodt Tennessee, land of my birth, old in tradition, richest of earth; Great Smoky Mountians, valleys and plains, sunshine and shadows, twilights and rains; Home of the deer, possum and coon, long Summer nights and The-Mam-In- The-Moon. Hay and tabacco, cotton and corn, come from this land---where I was born. Acres of orchards, millions of trees, meadows of clover, honey for bees; songs of the birds happy and gay, robins and sparrows and impudent jay. Highway, byways, rivers and hills, everywhere, everywhere scenery thrills! Cities like jewels that glitter at night, strong men and women---who stand the right. Jolly cute babies that laugh when they coo. They're saying quite frankly. "I Love You !" Beautiful Churches where sinners may pray, crystal sweet waters, TVA. Home of the Memphis and Beale Street Blues, high stepping browns, Chattanooga Choo Choo! Forrest the raider, and men who wore gray; "world's prettiest women---some folks say. Roses. iris and violets blue, wave with the breeze and sparkle with dew. Fields of fine cattle, the walking horse steed, and heavy fat swine, the best kind of breed. Gold in the sunsets or clear starry night, I wish I could stop---Time in it's flight! Because I'm not anxious to hear Gabriel's Horn, I like Tennessee---the place I was born

    1. [TNMARION] Kelly's Ferry -Thanks
    2. Hi Thanks to all who gave me information on Kelly's Ferry. My WILLIAMS ancestors lived there for a short while, sometime between 1877 and 1900. They emmigrated to America from South Wales landing, I think, in Pennsylvania. I know they lived for a while in Ohio (probably Acron) and then made their way down the Mississippi to Tennessee and Kelly's Ferry. About 1900 they came back to Wales for a visit and stayed. Apparently they had land in or around Kelly's Ferry and their youngest son was born there. I am really looking forward to visiting in August and will definitely make my way to Whitwell library. Thanks once again -Hope to see you in August Pam

    3. Pam, Tell me more about how you are kin to the Kelly bunch and which Kelly had the Ferry. I have linked back to Alexander Kelly who was a congressman in TN and had a 3,000 acre grant mostly in Marion Co. Is this the same line? 1. [TNMARION] TNGenWeb Temporary Pages
    2. Noel C. Matthews
    3. Just to keep you all informed on what is going on, USGenNet still has not received the new server from Dell. They seem to be dragging their feet on getting it completed. Guess everyone there took the time from Thanksgiving to the first of the new year off, cuz they sure taint doing much work!! Many of the TNGenWeb counties have temporary sites up. Here is the link to the page that lists what is up and what is down. The pages listed here will change daily as more and more counties will put their sites up at temporary locations to await the arrival of the new server. Here is the link: http://www.henderson-lea.hc.k12tn.net/donahue/madison/state.html If one of your favorite counties is not listed as being up, justkeep checking back. Cheers and Happy New Year to all, Noel

    2. Noel C. Matthews
    3. Greetings to all. Here is an early Christmas gift for all of you from Bill McConnell. He has a site that locates over 100 Marion County cemeteries. The cemeteries are located on maps so that you could find them fairly easily. The link will be placed on the Marion County web page in a day or two but thought all of you would like to get a head start and view it early. Here is the address/link to Bill's site: http://bellsouthpwp.net/w/m/wmcconne/marcem.htm Thanks Bill!! Cheers and Happy Holidays to all!! Noel

    1. [TNMARION] Temporary TNGenWeb Page Locations
    2. Noel C. Matthews
    3. Greetings to one and all. The new USGenNet server that houses most of the County Pages for TNGenWeb is still not ready to go. Dell is still working on building it to the necessary specifications. After it is received, it will still need to be programmed and all of the files loaded on to it. Hopefully it will be ready to go in a week or so. Probably January 1 is a closer date for it to be up. Here is the locations for those county pages in Tennessee that are located on other servers. Feel free to pass the addresses on to anyone that you know that might be doing research in Tennessee. http://www.henderson-lea.hc.k12tn.net/donahue/madison/state.html More will be added as the temporary sits are placed on other servers. The TNGenWeb Marion County, Tennessee, site is down but there is a second site that is part of ALHN (American Local History Network) at: http://www.noelm.com/marion/home.html The TNGenWeb Williamson County, Tennessee site can be found at: http://noelm.com/williamson/ I will keep you informed on any changes that occure. Cheers and Hapy Hollidys to all. Noel
