    3. Helen, Thanks so much for taking the time to post these records! Are you by chance researching the Smith or Burgess families of Marion Co., TN? I am a descendant of William Burgess b. 1760-1766 who is first found in Rutherford Co., NC, where he appears in the 1790 and 1800 Census. Between 1805-1808 he leaves NC and moves to TN, eventually settling in Marion Co., TN. I'm trying to find the connection between the Burgess and Smith families. William and Nimrod Smith are living near William Burgess in the 1800 Rutherford Co., NC Census and most likely made the move to TN with him. In 1830, William Smith is living next door to William Burgess in Marion Co., while Nimrod Smith is living next to William Burgess' son James Burgess in nearby Bledsoe Co. The fact that James Burgess named one of his sons Nimrod makes me believe that his wife Nancy may be a Smith. James' brother John Burgess married a Sarah Smith and they appear in the 1830 Census for nearby Hamilton Co., TN next to a James Smith with several other Smith families living nearby. John's son John Burgess, Jr., married a Rachel Smith. Do any of these families sound familiar? 1. [TNMARION] RE: Early Coal Mines and Miners of Marion Co.
    2. Am most interested in the list exchange concerning early mines and miners of Marion Co. as there is a strong belief that I had ancestors involved in that effort. John Cunningham, my g-g-grandfather, arrived in Marion Co. in ca. 1821 and acquired a sizable number of land holdings over the years until his death in 1842. One of his principle holdings involved a 5,000 acre track obtained in 1836 in partnership with Samuel Mitchell and William Anderson. John Cunningham died in 1842. John D. Cunningham, his son, was the executor of the John Cunningham estate and sold off his father's Marion Co. land holdings. John D. Cunningham moved to adjacent Jackson Co., AL, purchased land and opened the Cunningham (Coal) Mines on the north end of Sand Mountain in 1853. A John Patterson was also involved with that land purchase and mine operation. The family of John Cunningham consisted of the following: Descendants of John Cunningham John Cunningham 1784 - 1842 +Jane Ellie Henderson 1779 - 1868 Elizabeth Elis Cunningham 1802 - 1848 +Wm. McMurry Riley Alexander Cunningham 1805 - 1829 Amy (or Anni, Angy) Homes Cunningham 1807 - +James M. Kelly John D. Cunningham 1810 - 1892 +Elizabeth McCluskey 1814 - 1897 Pleasant Henderson Cunningham 1813 - +Virginia Ann McMurry 1813 - 1883 Rachel Montgomery Cunningham 1816 - 1894 +Johnethon McMurry 1815 - 1851 Unity Hollie Cunningham 1819 - 1894 Would greatly appreciate any available information on the subject John Cunningham, his family, and any history involving his participation in the early Marion Co. coal mining operations. Am especially interested in finding the origin and ancestry of this John Cunningham. Herb Cunningham HerbCunnin@aol.com

    1. Re: [TNMARION] Mines of Marion County
    2. There are some family files on the Kilgore family at the Whitwell library. Also I have compiled a book on what I could find on the mines in Marion Co. In fact there is a history in it that was written by one of the mine operators. In the old Sequatchie Valley newspapers there are gossip columns that are from Dade Co, Durham Ga and also Whitwell and Grundy co. It would take some research to go through all of these.
