All of Marion Co libraries are closed on Thursdays
The whitwell library does not have but one librarian
The Kelly family information is located in the family files at the Whitwell library, along with info on the various ferries of Marion Co
The whitwell library is the genealogical headquarters for Marion Co. The other librarians will help you but they would rather you come to Whitwell.
Ron come to the Whitwell library. Euline
Euline the Goodspeed records were written all over the United States for each county in each State-- or at least what were the States at that time period ( 1880 to 1890 era) thanks Betty

Wanda quoting only from my memory which usually gets me in a lot of trouble, the Goodspeed company went through every county in the US and collected information about prominent , or important,or well known people in that area. They usually were handsomely embellished to the point you usually only can believe about half of what it says. Yet it is a very good source of records for people of that time. By reading the book , I found out who my great great Grandparents were ( names) and where they were born where other wise I might never have found this information out. Seems I had a great great Aunt that had married a Judge and it was talking about him in the Goodspeed book and his wife and her parents were mentioned as well. Hope that helps. Betty
Can anyone give me any information about the riot at Hales Bar Lock and Dam in the early 1900's. My grandfather was a teenager when he worked on the Dam as a water boy. The riot happened between 1902-and 1913. I know the Chattanooga Library has articles written about it. I was hoping that may the library at South Pittsburg might have some as well. This made me laugh because I remember when we lived back there for 2 years (in Guild a.k.a. Haletown) every event was noted by "our" time and "Chattanooga" time. It really confused me for a while. Wow Donna thank you for posting that , it is very helpful. For those of you that aren't aware Donna is typing the Goodspeed book for Marion county that we will have posted to the new site as soon as we can get it transferred over. If you have trouble with that Address just take off the last half of it . such as <A HREF="http://www.genealinks.com/goodspeed.htm">http://www.genealinks.com/goo dspeed.htm</A> this is the one with half removed http://www.genealinks.com/goodspeed.htm for those of not on AOL or the other carriers that require the full address. Yes,Euline Harris is one of many of our excellent researchers on this list. She certainly is very helpful. Believe me this list is very blessed with some very serious genealogist that are more than willing to help out, whom ever needs the help. Betty
I'm so happy you'll be visiting Marion Co., TN. The library at Whitwell has an excellent genealogy department with family files. Check to see what their hours are because I don't know about Thursday and Saturday afternoons. The Marion County Genealogy Group has worked very hard on this. You might want to contact Euline Harris and ask her. For land records, you would need to visit the courthouse in Jasper. Good luck. Marilyn Burnett Garner
Here's a link that gives a brief description of the Goodspeed Histories.... <A HREF="http://www.genealinks.com/goodspeed.htm">http://www.genealinks.com/goodspeed.htm</A> Donna
Briefly can someone tell us what the Goodspeed Records are please?
Good link, I recognized Euline Harris and Lloyd Tate. Euline has been the best help I've ever had with my lines from that area. Betty, I thought I remembered that they all close on Thursday and must be open on Saturday. wanda
Hi Ron: I found the Whitwell Library to be very helpful in my research and I was only there for about 3 hours. I know they have other items at Jasper and So. Pittsburgh too. Here is a website that lists the names, addressses and times of the libraries. The one in Whitwell is easy to miss because it looks like a white ranch house. We drove past it 3 times before realizing it was the library! <A HREF="http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnmarion/research.htm">http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnmarion/research.htm</A> Also, I am in the process of transcribing the Goodspeed records for Noel and Betty. I haven't gotten to that section yet, but there are quite a few Kellys mentioned. These records are from the late 1800's I believe, but Noel can correct me on that. If you can let me know what names you're looking for, I will gladly look through them and give you whatever I find. Thanks....Donna O'Brien
