    3. Pat ~ Thank you for the info on Elizabeth's background. That's interesting - William and Elizabeth were both near 40 when they married. Which of the other children were actually by Elizabeth's first marriage? If you have birthdates, I would really appreciate for my files. I have copy of Grainger County Court Minutes vol. II There is one listing for Burnett, pg. 267 February Session 1809 - Listing of unpaid taxes - names (among others) Wm. "Burnet" 188 acres - taxes $0393.2 1/2 (Which really makes no sense as another person, Lewis Edwards had 250 acres and owed tax of $1.24 1/5!) My research in Grainger suggests that the early "law makers" in Grainger were quite a law onto themselves! Victoria Toms

    1. [TNMARION] recieved this morning
    2. macbetty
    3. I received this morning from a lady that is not subscribed to our list yet. Thought it would be of interest to all. Dear Mrs. McBee, The deed published on the Marion County website between J. E. Teague and J. N. Smith is very interesting to me. Most of the people mentioned in the deed seem to be connections to my great grandfather. I believe J. N. Smith and A. M. Smith were brothers of my great grandfather, and J. E. Teague was their uncle. Thomas Golston may have been J. N. Smith's father-in-law and G. W. Golston could have been Thomas's son. If I am correct, James Noah Smith and Alfred M. Smith were sons of Layton Key Smith. James Noah's first wife was Elizabeth Golston, daughter of Thomas Golston, and Joshua E. Teague was married to Sarah Smith, Layton's sister. If Helen Smith Hoke is also interested in this family, I would like very much to exchange information with her. There are some mysteries about the family that have eluded two generations of researchers. I am Jean Crowder and my e-mail address is crowdertech@sbcglobal.net. I would appreciate your help if you could put me in touch with Mrs. Hoke. I have transcribed four Marion County deeds that might be of interest to you. Three of them describe land transactions of Layton K. Smith and the last one concerns the sale of land in settlement of his estate and mentions five of his six children. If you are interested in them, I will e-mail the transcriptions to you, or copy the copies I have and mail them to you. The copies are not as readable as I would like. I copied them from the microfiles at the Marion County Courthouse two or three years ago. I think they were originally transcribed by the WPA workers in the 1930s. Thank you so much for publishing the deed on the website and thank you also for any help you can provide in putting me in touch with Mrs. Hoke. Best Regards Jean Crowder

    3. This information came from The Marion Co. Cemetery Book. This is part of an article from the Sequachee Valley News dated Jan. 29, 1931. There is a movement under foot to name the new road to Palmer from Whitwell the "Shropshire" Road, after John Shropshire of England, who was the pioneer of this secton years before the place was located at Whitwell by an English Company. John Shropshire was born May 18, 1767 and died June 16, 1846. His wife, Mary J. Shropshire was born Nov. 29, 1778 and died Nov. 31, 1847. He was a smith and had ashop near his home. He was a justice of the peace and trials of culprits were often held in his shop. I happen to run across this while researching cemeteries. Delbert Ladd

    3. Yes! William Street who wrote the will you are referring to is the son of Anthony Street. Anthony Street was father to: William b. 1771, Temperance b. 1773, Asa b. 1776, Jane b. 1777, Elizabeth b. 1779, and Anthony b. 1780. William first married Nancy Shelton in Grainger County 1800 - Richard Shelton was the bondsman for the marriage. William and Nancy had Hannah (Thurman), Elizabeth (Bledsoe) and Nancy (Easley). Nancy died and he married Elizabeth Burnett. They were married September 13, 1807. Henry Howell bm. Their children were Oliver, William Jr., Edwin, Martha, Sallie (Sarah) Anthony and Julia. They are all named in William's LW&T which you mention. Sallie (Sarah) Pomphrett Street married John C. Dougherty. Related Streets and Sheltons also lived in Lincoln County, TN. Thank You! 2. Victoria Toms
    3. Hi Ron and List Members, Yes, the surnames which I am interested in are Shelton, Prigmore, Kelly, Pryor, Hudson and also Street. I am in a working situation that will not let me concentrate on family research for several more weeks. I will be able to put together more info to help you at that time. These families, along with other first pioneer settlers of Tennessee were strongly connected and through the years (1790's - 1900's) the families intermarried more than a few times. The Sheltons and the Prigmores undoubtedly met in early Grainger County and Knox County Tennessee (1790 - 1812) and lived there. Land and court records show this. Ephraim Layfayette Prigmore b. 1783 married Margaret Kelly b. 1789 They were married in 1809. Margaret Kelly was the daughter of Alexander Kelly Sr. died/drowned in Sequatchie River 1810. James Ore Prigmore was one of the sons of Ephraim Layfayette Prigmore and Margaret Kelly. James Ore Prigmore b.1810 married Elizabeth Shelton b. 1817. Elizabeth Shelton was the daughter of Richard Shelton and Temperance Street Shelton. The first son of James Ore Prigmore and Elizabeth Shelton was named: John Street Prigmore (after Elizabeth's Uncle, John Street) The second child was named Temperance Jane Prigmore, she married Phillip Green Pryor. Their youngest daughter, Mary Amanda Prigmore married William Pryor. It is my understanding, from studying deeds and the census records, that the Kellys, The Sheltons and The Prigmores all had land which adjoined. The Pryor family was also near by. Knowing the closeness of the families and how they depended on "The Mill" (years before the Ketner family acquired the mill and Gilliam Shelton's land) certainly indicates how my great-grandfather came by his name, "Ephraim Kelly Shelton". Ephraim Kelly Shelton was the fifth son of Gilliam. I wish that I had time to help out further on this . . . Please send me a note after June 14th and I will put together more information to send you. Try an internet search for "James Ore". - The Sheltons, Prigmores and Kellys and Streets were strongly connected to this man in early Tennessee history. David Shelton and George Shelton were two signers of The Cumberland Compact - 1780. There is strong circumstantial evidence to indicate that David Shelton was closely related to Richard Shelton. It is my belief that James Ore was probably instrumental in guiding these families to Marion County and the surrounding Indian Lands. Keep in mind that the "North Carolina Land Grants in Tennessee" brought many early pioneers together in North Eastern Tennessee, before moving to Marion County. These families already had strong bonds before they actually made the move to Marion County. Looking at Deed Books A and B for Marion County - you can see that Anthony Street (the father of Temperance Street Shelton) and Alexander Kelly were two of the very first to legally settle in the area. Any help on Gilliam's wife, who I believe to be a "Hudson" would be appreciated. Thank You! Victoria Toms
