If Wm.Burnet owed taxes of $393.21/2 on 188 acres in 1809,that would indelicate that he owned prime farm land. It may have had a mill section it (i.e. a flowing source of water suitable for operating a grist mill which was considered valuable). Edwards 250 acres might have been mountain land (i.e. straight up and full of rocks and trees.) My great-grand father made a lot of money over in Hamilton county in the 1880-90s,buying land on the mountains for as little as a penny an acre, tanbarking it then cutting the timber and selling it. He would then let the land be sold for taxes, because it was of no further value to him.
Does anyone have access to the Tennessee 1860 census index. I am trying to locate James BRYAN. Possibly in Marion or Hamilton Counties in 1860. Thanks for any assistance. Jackie if you will look at http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnmario2/ under "look ups" there are a couple of names there that would be happy to do looks up for you --- All we ask is you ask for one name at a time. thanks Betty
There was a Sequatchie College in Sequatchie Co or it might have been Bledsoe Co then. There was a Pryor Institute in Marion but I have never heard of a Union. That doesn't mean that there never was one, I have never seen anything on one. Euline
Pat does she tell where she found the research on our Burnetts? Euline
Can you tell me who her parents were or her siblings. I am researching the SMITH's of Marion Co,TN and she may be related. To all of those who have written to me while I was on vacation over the long weekend, I am back but my computer has picked up a virus while I was gone, no one knows how this happened, and I have lost everything. I am installing my operating system as we speak but will not be back up until sometime over the weekend. I am using my husbands computer while mine is down. I will try to answer messages as soon as possible. I guess I have to make another trip to Marion Co, TN to get the headstone pictures I lost. I'm so sad. lol. Thanks for understanding.
> Is this her Maiden Name or her married name ? > Sallie Smith is the maiden name. As an aside, I was very, very surprised when I read a little two liner in the old newspaper book in the Whitwell Library, that they had gone over the mountain to Tracy City to marry in 1902. Her husband was Thomas James (Jim) Drake. Both her parents died before 1900 and she and siblings were raised by their "bachelor and bachelorette aunts and uncles." This is verified in the 1900 census. Thanks. wanda casker
Is this her Maiden Name or her married name ?
I would love to see some old photos of Victoria, At one time there was a Coke oven, School, Stores, Post office, old gas station, 2 churches, a depot and maybe some other things as well, Surely some one out there has some old photos of this by gone town. this wish list was sent in by Sandralyn66@cs.com can any one help us out here ? I will blind copy this to my cousins that are more familiar with that area as well as this list. :-)
It appears our Web site is back up and running -- so Bill will have to cancel his fishing trip:-) He has added more today to it. Some very interesting material -- thanks again Bill Betty macbetty@skytel.com http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnmario2/
My grandmother was a school teacher at about 1900 and her name was Sallie Smith. She married in 1902. Supposedly she went to a school, and I am sure it had to be fairly nearby to Whitwell where they lived. Would this have been what they might have called a "normal" school? With these books and records being reported recently on this list, does anybody show her as a teacher in Whitwell? Or might someone have an idea where she could have been trained and would there be any records? Any insights appreciated. Thanks. wanda casker
Apparently this is what is going on as I went to the help desk and they said the following ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ www: 2003-05-28 www.rootsweb.com will be unavailable for system maintenance. Est. downtime: 1 day(s). So I guess we will have to patient and let Bill go fishing :-) Betty
Apparently Bill broke our web site-- ha-ha just kidding-- he really didn't , but apparently it is down for right now for some maintenance work from rootsweb. I also have noticed some peculiar bounces . So if by chance rootsweb tell you ,you are removed from our list PLEASE notify me , as it has been doing some strange things the last two days. I don't want to loose you for sure and we can remedy it real quick my manually adding you back on the list. thanks Betty macbetty@skytel.com http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnmario2/ http://www.geocities.com/macbettyboop/sitemap.html researching McBee, Spence, White, Ward, Barnes, Murray, Rector, Kilgore Holly, Breshears, Flanagan, Stiles, Bradley, Whitenberg,Huff, Lynch,Chitwood,Hanes,Hills to name a few
Iley Thompson said she would gladly do looks up for us -- she has available an 1850 Marion and a CD set of the National 1880,and a 1860 Hamilton image disk ,if some one needs a look up. Please, I will ask you to follow our rules and only request one name at a time. Iley is new to our list, but certainly not new to Marion County area. We sure appreciate having you join us Iley and looking forward to you posting all your surnames as well as any other information you would like to add. Thanks Betty

Hi Helen: I know that in Warren Co. there is a town called Irving College. It got its name from a school that used to be there and it just stuck. You won't find it on any maps. My guess is something similar with this name. Try e-mailing someone at TSLA. They are very knowledgeable about place names and might be able to tell you more about this. Donna

The lived in Hamilton County TN and also in Walnut Valley, Sequatchie, TN. in 1870. Did the google search but can't find a Union Institute i- rather odd name for a town.. Would like to know about his death on April 21, 1872 at Union Institute - died from a gun wound - by another man.
