Donna...Archibald is a name that is often found in the Young family also. And I find it interesting that the large Scots/Irish settlement in Augusta Co., VA was referred to as the 'Irish Tract.' The clues that helped me connect to this Lamont family were what Dad always told us kids as we were growing up: 1) he said we were Irish, 2) he said we were from VA, 3) he said our name had not always been 'Young' but that it had been changed back in history, so far back that the original name had been forgotten, and 4) he said our name had been changed because we were on the wrong side of the law. Now...that last reason threw me for a while until I researched the clan form of government. The strongest clan ruled...they were literally 'the law.' So my ancestors hiding out in Ireland from Clan Campbell were actually thought of as outlaws. I was able to connect to research done in the 1920s by an Irish genealogist by the name of Mary Semple. I have found several families in America who carried down the story of the name change. The best family history book I have ever read was about one branch of my Young family....John Young, KY Pioneer and His Kin by Jessamine Young Wooton, published in 1972. When I bought this book in 1977 and read the same story in it that Dad had always told us, I knew I was on the right track. It took me 23 more years to make a proven connection but, oh, it was so worth it! Sharon Young Jebavy <>< ShaLamont@wideopenwest.com
I checked the statewide Tn 1860 census and only found the following: Name spelled Byent, James 48, Nancy 31, Josiah 19, Emily E 15, Sarah C 12, John 9 Lucinda J 7, Susan c 2 and James H 2 in McNairy Co Tn Also a James R 22, Adaline 2, Jones 1, Eldorah 2/12 in McNairy Co Tn James R Briant, 31 Nancy 31 John S 5, Smith 6, George 3, James 4/12 Wilson Co Tn I did not find any James R Bryan , thought the name could be misspelled. Euline
Sharon: Thanks for all the information. There is a family rumor that our Arch White came from Ireland originally, so this may be a connection for us. We'll have to keep digging and find out..... Donna O'Brien
That is very interesting Sharon -- thank you for sharing that. I am going to save that for sure. Has any one seen the TV documentary on the Whites of Ky.? Quite interesting too , about the feuding there. I can't remember the county right now but I do know it borders Tn. Betty
Just a general note about one possibility for the origins of the White surname... In 1646 in Dunoon, Scotland Clan Campbell massacred Clan Lamont (pronounced Lamb-it). One John Lamont was among those 36 clan leaders hanged in a tree in the church yard. His wife, Mary Young Lamont, escaped in an open boat across the 39 miles of ocean, with her four young children, to County Antrim, Northern Ireland. They landed near a small town called Larne. There, all four of her sons took on new surnames to protect themselves from Clan Campbell. John, the oldest son, took the name Sitlington for a stream that ran on their Scotland estate. The two middle sons took the names White and Green. The White brother was most likely named William. I do not know anything more about the Green brother. The youngest son, Andrew, took his mother's maiden name...Young. Andrew was my 7th great grandfather. John Sitlington and his brother, Andrew Young, and their children and grandchildren, ran a linen manufacturing mill near Larne for about 96 years. They began migrating to America about 1737. The stone linen mill still stands today. The Youngs and Sitlingtons landed in Augusta Co., VA. William Young migrated to KY about 1777. You can find more about the Young family at http://www.geocities.com/charryoung.html I have no other information on the Whites except that a great grandson of Andrew Young, Capt. John Young, married his cousin Mary White in Augusta Co., VA, so some of William White's descendants did migrate to America. Capt. John Young was an aid to Gen. George Washington during the Rev War and is the ancestor of Sen. John McCain. I descend from John Young's uncle, William Young, mentioned above. Sharon Young Jebavy <>< ShaLamont@wideopenwest.com
I also need Brown-White information especially the documentation that William Brown of SC is the father of Malinda Brown and that Archibald Brown of Marion Co., TN is her brother. Any hint or lead will be greatly appreciated. Thanks much. Marilyn
And if you run into a Archibald White from Ky , please send him my way. He married Mary M Kenny and that is my husbands great Grandparents. Their daughter Nancy White McBee, is his Grandmother . Donna has more information on these but I do believe she is out of town for the weekend. Betty
Pat wrote the following------ can some one help her --- such as David Graham, Marilyn Garner , Donna or Euline --- I have the information but think it would be beneficial if this was responded to on the list , since we do have quite a few White researchers on here. thanks Betty ------- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Dear Betty: I am on the Marion Co TN list and I recently came across a family history on rootsweb that I am interested in. For some reason I could not determine the name of the compiler or their address but the mentioned that you and Euline Harris were among various contributors to his information. I would like to get in touch with who ever this is. This is the family of David M. WHITE b. 1805-d. 17 Apr 1891 in Spartenburg Co SC. He was married to Malinda BROWN and I have thought that Malinda BROWN might be the sister of my Archibald BROWN b. 1812 GA and was in Marion Co by 1840 census or before. I have not been able to prove my theory on the BROWN family and I am hoping that this person can shed some light on it. Also 3 of my Great aunts married WHITES in Marion Co and I was hoping to share that information with the person. If you know how I can contact this person, I would appreciate it very much. Thanks Pat Hoffman

If you have your genealogy uploaded to a web site and would like to list your web page address with us, we would be more than happy to put it on the Marion county ,Tn web site. -- You might want to list your main surnames as well as the address. Also if you have your information and it is not on a web site and you would like to put it on one. Contact me off the list and I would be more than happy to help you get started. -- Believe me I am by no means an expert but do have some excellent resources and free classes on the web. thanks
http://terraserver-usa.com/image.aspx?t=2&s=16&x=50&y=303&z=16&w=2 Betty if your interested here is a link to terra server that has aerial photos and topo maps. The map this brings up is looking down on the tri corner area of Marion Hamilton and Dade. Its a cool site you can look most any thing in the us. Iley
Iley Thompson was kind enough to give us this site http://www.hctgs.org/ They have #42 Kelly's Ferry, and #59 McNabb. They also have some Hamilton Co marriages on line ,some Marion Co people would get license in Chatt, that is unless they just jumped the broom as my grandmother use to say. While there are a lot of Hamilton County and Bradley county information there are a lot of names and places associated with Marion County as well . Betty

I will try to get to the Whitwell library today and look at our 1860 index and see if I can find your James Bryan. Euline
I checked my newspaper book for the year 1902 and found the following: Miss Sallie Smith began teaching school at the Masonic Hall Monday morning. 7-31-1902. That was in the Whitwell column. In the Bolivar Ala column dated 19-30-1902 was t he following: Miss Sallie Smith spent Saturday and Sunday with her sister at South Pittsburg, Mrs. Dora Carlton. In the 1903 book it stated Mr. James Drake and Miss Sallie Smith were married Wednesday at Tracy City and left the same day for Illinois to spend their honeymoon. In this paper there are columns from Herrin Ill also and on 9=17-1903 it stated: A B Turner and James Drake moved from main st over to the west side of town. 11-22-1903 Mr. & Mrs. J M Drake attended church Sunday night. I did not check any more of my books. Euline Harris
