Mary "Polly" Ann Smith Benjamin Franklin m. Martha Ann Smith George Washington m. Mary Jane Smith These 3 Smiths were supposed to be cousins, but I've never been able to prove it. What I do have is that Polly Ann Smith's parents were William H. and Caroline Louisa Smith ( I don't know what Caroline's maiden name was). I'm still weeding through census records to see if I can make a match. I have never been able to connect William H. Smith to Ransom Smith, but I've not discovered who his parents were yet, so it's still a possibility. According to census records, William was born August 1837 and Caroline was born October 1837. That list you sent out the other day had William Smith and wife Caroline listed on it, but it showed William was 23. Ours would have been about 13 in 1850, so 10 years is a big difference. You never know though, since they really didn't seem to know their own ages back then! I'm going to do some digging on the 1850 census today and see what I can find. I know I looked for William H. before, but wasn't able to come up with anything in Marion Co. -- I'll try some of the surrounding counties today. 1. [TNMARION] East TN Historical Society
    2. Just thought I'd pass this information along to anyone who might be interested: The East Tenn. Historical Society is sponsoring 2 programs called: First Families of Tennessee: <A HREF="http://www.east-tennessee-history.org/default.cfm?FuseAction=184321&SectionID=0&TSMI=18">http://www.east-tennessee-history.org/default.cfm?FuseAction=184321& SectionID=0&TSMI=18</A> and Civil War Families of Tennessee: <A HREF="http://www.east-tennessee-history.org/?FuseAction=184321&SectionID=0&TSMI=19">http://www.east-tennessee-history.org/?FuseAction=184321&SectionID=0&TSMI=19</A> The criteria for the First Families is that your ancestor be living in TN in 1796 or before. You must document lineage, etc. They have applications that you can download in .pdf format. The criteria for the Civil War families is that you have a direct or collateral relation who served in the Civil War as either Union or Confederate. You need proof of service and documentation proving lineage. I think these books will be great references for our future generations! My g-grandfather was James William Patrick and his father was William Patrick. We think that William was born about 1850. I have heard mention of a Beersheba somewhere in the family, but don't know if there's a connection to the Patricks. It seems that a lot of my lines (even the ones that I know to have lived in Grundy and Warren Counties) have lived in Marion Co. at one time or another. On the Rawlings side, I've not seen that sketch. I'd like to take a look at that. I know the name is spelled several ways (Rollins, Rawlings, Rollings). Nancy was the daughter of James Lewis Rawlings and Mary Hargis. Do you know if the book you mentioned "Hamilton County Pioneers" is still available? I know that J. L. Rollings (Nancy's nephew) wrote several books, but as far as I know, none are still in print. Thanks for the information. 2. Hi Sandie, I am working on the children of my gggrandfather William Hale. I am not having any luck in finding them. I think that most of them went to Arkansas , Taxas and California. I found a cousin Jesse Hale in California but he is not instered in our family. I have other cousins that are going to send me information but they have been slow. I have not received any information from any of them. I am still looking for Pleasant Hale that married Susan. I would like to find out what Susan's last name was and who thier three children married. I think that Pleasant Hale was who you where working on. Did you find anything on him? If you have any information on this family I will appreciate any help you can give me. I would like to see your web page. Thanks for answering my email. Charlotte

    3. No, I am still looking for them, I have the understanding, that she had a brother, named or nickname Matt Hale, that worked at Dwight Cotton Mill in Alabama City-now Gadsden-, Alabama. I am still searching for them, my grandfarther was born in Trion, Chattooga County, Georgia or that is what he always told us, in 1881. ----- Original Message ----- From: <CMatt92823@aol.com> To: <TNMARION-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, June 04, 2003 9:10 PM Subject: Re: [TNMARION] Sandie Huffstutler > > > Do you have the parents of your Nancy Hale? > > Thanks, Charlotte > > > ==== TNMARION Mailing List ==== > *********************************************************************** > PLEASE NOTE: This list is for queries and replies, comments, > requests for help, and other genealogical related information > that is of interest to researchers having a connection or a > possible connection to Marion County, Tennessee. > Betty MCBee - macbetty@bigskytel.com - keeper of the list. > Marion County Web Site: http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnmario2/ > *********************************************************************** > > ============================== > To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion online genealogy records, go to: > http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237 > >

    1. [TNMARION] Trip to Marion Co.
    2. Hi All: I have been working with a gal out in California on our Thompson line.  We found out through some common photos that we are definitely looking at the same line.  She wrote me a note today and said that her sister lives in TN and wants to make a trip to Marion Co. I've told her I think the best place to start is at the Whitwell library.  I didn't find much in the Thompson file that would help us on the areas we're stuck on, but I haven't been able to study all of it as much as I'd like.  I know that this girl is new to gen. research, so I don't want her to get discouraged, but I don't think she's going to find much more than I already have.  Here's the issues we're facing.  We're stuck on the parents of our patriarch.  He was born 1835 and we think he was orphaned by 1850 (he was living with Henleys at age 14).  Samuel F. Thompson married Nancy Rawlings and they had 3 sons:  James B., Benjamin Franklin, and George Washington.  Our line:  James B. married Mary "Polly" Ann Smith.  They had 3 children:  William H. b. 1890, Samuel C. b. 1892, and Mary b. 1902 (m. James Henley).  Our "Uncle Billy" (William H.) left TN between 1905 and 1914.  We're not sure where he stopped along the way, but we know he was in Washington State in 1914 when his daughter was born.  After 1914, we have no idea where he went except that he served in WWI, for a time on the U.S.S. Pennsylvania.  We're trying to find out what happened to William H. Thompson.  I've checked the WWI records at TSLA.  We don't think he ever returned to TN.  We've tried NARA, but they keep telling us they need an SS# before they can help us.  I've looked into the USS Penn, but it never went into battle during WWI -- I think he must have been reassigned, but not sure where.  I have much more experience with WWII research so I may need to look in different places than I have been. I have a hunch that Aunt Mary Henley knew about William H. Thompson's daughter out in Washington and kept in touch with her.  In the photos Hazel Thompson saved was one of Mary Thompson Henley as a much older woman.  I know that Mary Henley had 4 boys:  Melbourn, Jim, Roy and Sam Price Henley.  I think Sam Price is the only one still living.  Does anyone know any of the Henleys that I could e-mail and ask about this missing relative?  I'm hoping that some of the old photos, bibles, etc. might have survived with this part of our line.  Several of our Thompsons are buried in the City Cemetery, so I'm going to send her there.  As a side note, our Samuel F. served in the 34th TN CSA Infantry under Captain Bostick.  I have his service record from TSLA, but no pension was ever applied for that we can find.  Samuel F. died in 1910, so the death records are no help because they didn't contain parents information back then.  Does anyone have any suggestions on where we should go next?  I appreciate any ideas you can offer!  Thanks much.... Donna O'Brien (Researching:  White, Harris, Thompson, Patrick, Havner, Murray, Sitz, Slaughter, Kenny, Smith, Troy, Robertson,  Richmond, Lockhart, Bess,  Rawlings, Anderson, Shote, Anders, Blair, Killian, Hargis, Bost, Floyd)

It has been inactive for a while but I recently heard from him and he is ready to get going on it again.
