    3. Jerre Hookey sent me the following note and I do believe it is certainly important enough to pass on to all of you ------------ Betty, I went to Raulston cemetery this morning to do some weedeating around my greatgrandparents graves. Raulston cemetery in located off Hwy. 2. I don't know if the following is appropriate for the Marion county site or not. I notice as I was going to my ancestors graves someone had been in the cemetery either making pictures of grave markers, rubbings or trying to read names better. They had covered a lot of the names with carpenter's chalk or similar material. That is a don't in the does and don'ts of reading names on grave stone.

    3. Census takers made a LOT of mistakes.....no matter what they signed off to on the last page....where they swear they have correctly counted and visited all the homes. I have in my files where in 1930 two different census takers enumerated the same homes in one part of Walker County, Tx. My g-grandparents are on one sheet with just 3 of their children and on another sheet with all 4 children, plus a son-in-law. I have several times read each census sheet for a particular county and NOT found my husband's grandfather at all.....and he WAS living there at the time. Same with my own great-grandparents in 1920. And some families simply would not talk to the census guys....especially if they were new to the country. They make lots of errors with names, and depending on who was asked the questions, other info is wrong also. If the family was not home, a neighbor may have been asked. Just consider all the possibilities when looking at census sheets (those that are legible anyway...haha). Pat --------------------------------- Yahoo! Mail Stay connected, organized, and protected. 2. Richard Bloss
    3. I believe the census taker wrote everything... All tha hand writing in all the actual census sheets I have seen are in the same handwriting.. Hence so many alternate spellings. Mistakes in data. My son-in-law's mother was born in WI but the 1930 census lists it as IL. I thkink because most of the children in the family were born in IL so he just filled in IL for all.. 2. macbetty
    3. you might want to keep in mind a lot of people ( majority) could not read nor write and so the census taker filled in the blank spaces for them----------------- imagine this exaggerated scenario: You are the wife -- you do not know how to read and barely can sign your name, your husband is off to work and just you and the 5 children are home alone-- the census taker knocks on your door ---- your husband has told you not to let any one in the house, so you stand at the door -- little Johnny is tugging at your skirt and desperately needs changing , Mary wants to be fed , Susie has decided since Mom is busy now is a good time to get into the fascinating items, Mom forbids you in, your dinner is boiling over on the stove --- etc. so forth--- about this time you are so flustered you can't remember exactly what your name is, let alone where your husband was born or even for sure how old he is--- his cousin lives down the road a piece, so the census taker thinks well if he was born in Ind then so must your husband be.----- Next time he comes 10 years latter -- most of the kids are in school so you can think --- keeping in mind most people were very suspicious of any government agency and only filled out what they absolutely had too------------ I know for a fact some people used to consider it none of the government's business where you were born or when or anything else about them. ----------- Besides that since he was married more than once perhaps he could have not told or not even bothered to mention it, unless she asked, the new wife anything about where he was born or even when ------- majority of people then did not celebrate their birthdays with big elaborate parties as we sometimes do now. -------------- think about it -- could this be the reasoning? 3. Hello all...I got this from another list and thought that some of you might be interested too. Donna ---------------------------------------------------- Tonight, 25 July 2005, at 8:00 p.m. on public television on History Detectives are investigating a great mystery in Decatur, Tennessee, which involves a woman of Cherokee descent who inherited a mysterious bible from her father. She is intrigued by what appears to be Cherokee writing in the bible, and wants to learn more about her own family's history. This native language was invented by the Cherokee Indian Sequoia in the early 1800s in a desperate effort to win the respect of the U.S. authorities for his people. While Sequoia succeeded in establishing literacy rates far in excess of the encroaching white settlers, the Cherokee were ultimately forced to march on the infamous "Trial of Tears" to Oklahoma. History Detectives learns more about one of the most tragic events in U. S. history as they head to Oklahoma and Tennessee to tackle the genealogical mystery behind the bible. http://www.pbs.org/opb/historydetectives/
